Manual, Bell Punch Co, "The Automaticket Bell Punch System of Fare Collection and Control", c1935
Yields information about the method that the State Electricity Commission of Vic undertook interviews for staff appointments. Gave advice of the era for such interviews and objectives of the interview.Thirty page book printed on heavy light brown paper, stapled with an folded card cover titled "The Automaticket Bell Punch System of Fare Collection and Control". Describes the Automaticket system, has samples of traffic tickets pasted in the book, diagrams, drawings, gives details of the components and method of operation in particular ticket inspection, ticket and checking back office functions. Published by the Bell Punch Company of London early to mid 1930's? Cover and each page headed "Confidential Information for Executives". Has a photo of South Western Roadlines double deck bus with a conductor. See also Reg. Item 3629 for another version of the pamphlet for this machine. In the rear cover of the book, folded and stapled to give a pocket, are listed three forms that would have been provided with the book - not with the collected copy. -However in the pocket were eleven 11 "Ticket Issue Machine" or "TIM" tickets - eg City of South Melbourne library fine, packing slips, sample meal tickets, Army canteen beer tickets, and sample bus tickets - including one pinned to a business card - John Bolland of Eastern Suburbs Omnibus Service who were the agents for the TIM machines. Yields information about the procedures, instructions and rules that tramway (depot and track) worked under in Ballarat.Gestetner reproduced 'State Electricity Commission of Victoria / Ballarat Electricity Supply and Tramways / Rules Governing Depot Employees' consisting of three pages and a single page "Rules Governing Track Repair Employees", with welding repair notes on the rear in pencil and ink showing location and where welds done and some dates (1958). Document details General rules such as hours of duty, fire, accidents behaviour; Depot Operation - Safety Rules detailing many procedural rules about work safety on trams. Yields information about the day to day nature of the operations in Ballarat, especially derailments at points of maximum traction bogie trams and the way people behaved at such times.Black and White photograph of Ballarat No. 34 derailed, Sturt & Drummond St corner (south side), causing disruption to tram services. Photo published by The Courier 20/7/1960, published on 21/7/1960. Three single truck trams are banked up behind the tram. Note the lady passengers remained on board while the Gentlemen watched from the street in their overcoats. Tram has two Admiral roof advertisements, advertising Televisions (TV), about the time of the introduction of TV into Ballarat. Collected by Alan Bradley from the Ballarat Courier early 1980's. Has the Ritzy Cafe in the background. Also has a "Cars Stop Here" and a "End of Section sign in the photograph, that looks back along Sturt St. Tram has the destination of Sebastopol. Yields information about the condition of the ESCo tram fleet at the time of the SEC takeover of the operations their appearance, the reconstruction work and trackwork to rehabilitate the system. Demonstrates an important era of the Ballarat Tramways through the SEC preparing an album of photographs. The completeness of the record adds to the significance.Photo Album - comprising folded manila card covers, 11 photo sheets each with two, one with three black and white photos. Has three metal - steel fold back clips holding the sheets together. Folded so that the metal clips are not exposed on the outside. Has the title "Photographs of Ballarat Tramways Rolling Stock & Track Reconditioning Works". Album contains 23 photos, glued to the manila sheets - assembled by the SEC. All SEC photos except as noted below. Each of the photographs have been separately registered, as shown in the table below. Scanned images made of photos. Conservation Notes prepared - within the cataloguing sheet. Inside cover Typed notes, dated 1935, of the early trams of Ballarat, trailers ex Sydney, new trams ex Melbourne in 1930, and a further 5 in 1931. Functional Object - Ticket punch, Bell Punch Ltd
Demonstrates aspects of tramway operation, cancelling or showing that tickets had been inspected following sales to passengers by the conductor or motorman. Traditionally used by tramway operators to check or cancel tickets.Steel cast, chrome plated, machined, device used to cancel or punch paper tickets when purchased. Placed a four pointed star hole in the ticket. Spring loaded, consists of two main parts with a pin & spring in addition. Has a circular steel ring for a finger hold. Chrome plate started to wear off in some places. Has letter "D6" punched onto one arm and "Supplied by Bell Punch Ltd Uxbridge" just below the slit in the punch for the ticket.Has letter "D6" punched inside of handles near pin and letter "C: on inside of both handles and "X" near the outer edge of one the insides of the handle.trams, tramways, ticket punch, tickets, fares -

Dated 30/5/1957 Has stamped number "790" in bottom. Printing number 1/228. Provides for 226 General Rules - in four sections - General, Tram system only, Bus system only, Accident prevention and procedure (Tram and Bus), and By-Law Nos. 11 and 16, General and Lost property.
