A letter that was sent from Legatee PW Powell to Legatee 'Doney' on 21st September 1928. He mentions his purpose is to record some of the early history of Legacy in a minute book of the Club, which unfortunately was missing at the time of writing. As well as saying it was formed after Stan Savige saw General Gellibrand's Remembrance Club in Hobart. Luncheon meetings were held and the first one L/ Powell attended in September 1923 had about 8 attendees - Stan Savige, Fred Forrest, Frank Selleck, Charlie Watson, Peter Eller, and Ted Pittard. L/ Powell was appointed Hon. secretary and there was discussion about the name of the club. Suggestions included 'Continuance', 'Chevron', 'Espirit de Corps', and 'Apres Le Guerre'. He says 'at that stage Legacy was not mentioned, the inspiration came later in my own offie when seeking a name that would appeal to he imagination. My recommendation to the members was covered in he first luncheon address given to the Club under the title of "Business Leadership" .' Selection of the first president included inviting General Monash and General Tivey, who both declined. Colonel Harold Cohen accepted. 'The first literature issued by the Club included: List of office bearers (deleting decorations and rank) / Constitution and By laws / Classification / Brief History (which was torn up before issue as it was felt that Legacou should be impersonal and that the principal should stand before the individual).' This circular was issued to both Legacy Club of Melbourne and The 'Carry On' Club of Melbourne, and signed by presidents: JHB Armstrong for Legacy and WL Sinclair for Carry On. It was after a series of annual conferences between the two clubs and shows an agreement between the clubs on the spheres of work carried out by each club to prevent duplication of effort. As a general rule, Legacy would concentrate on the care of widows and children of DECEASED servicemen; the 'Carry On' Club would focus on the LIVING ex-servicemen and their dependents. A note was made that the Intermediate Legacy Club was a group formed of sons of deceased soldiers who had progressed through the Junior Legacy Club and now 'interest themselves in the physical well-being of totally and permanently incapacitated ex-servicemen.' When an ex-serviceman dies leaving dependents the case will be transferred from the Carry On Club to Legacy, with the occasional exception. Employment: 'Legacy will pass to 'Carry On' the employment opportunities or vacancies that can be filled by ex-servicemen or their dependents in instances were Legacy is unable to fill such vacancies from it's own register' and vice versa. Welfare: close liaison is important and copies of reports will be transferred when transferring cases. These resolutions and discussions about them are shown in the minutes of the "Combined Meeting of Members of Legacy and 'Carry On' Clubs held at Legacy Club Rooms on 27 May 1937, which is the second document included here. Present for Legacy were Legatees Armstrong, Russell, Birrell, Kemsley, Clements. And present for the 'Carry On' Club were Messrs Hall, Pears, Masterson, Neil and Ramsay. These letters and notices from 1935 relate to Legacy establishing a Fund to help with Victorian children that are not eligible for the benefits of the Repatriation Department, the RSS. Children's Scholarship Fund and other established funds. The primary policy of the Trust is to provide 'educational assistance for the children of deceased soldiers by way of tuition fees, trailing expenses, cost of books, equipment and/or contributions towards the maintenance of the beneficiaries during the period of training.' Documents include a memo being sent to all Legatees explaining the fund and asking for ideas on how to raise the money and introductions to possible donors. Also a letter to the minister explaining the scheme. It seems if the death of the father was not ruled as 'due to war causes' the child was not eligible for Repatriation educational benefits. Whereas Legacy does not draw a distinction in relation to the cause or time of death of the father. Legacy had been working with the 'Carry On' Club and spent several hundreds of dollars for these children. The 'Carry On' Club was changing its focus to living war veterans. A memo dated 5th December 1935 says there was a delay in passing the 'Enabling Bill' through Parliament. Further outcome is not known. A card given to Legatees by the Comradeship Committee in 1939. 'Dear Legatee, Another year of Legacy has passed, another year of Service has commenced. May it continue to bring you much happiness in the appreciation of a great Comradeship. Comradeship Committee, 1939. The poem on the reverse says: 'I shall pass through this world but once, Any good thing that I can do, or any kindness That I can show any human being, Let me do it now and not defer it, For I shall not pass this way again.' This document records the legal status of 'Junior Legacy, Melbourne' in 1952. Melbourne Legacy has had name changes over the years. In September 1952 Junior Legacy Melbourne was incorporated. Under the provisions of the Companies Act 1938, it was registered as a company with limited liability without the need for 'limited' in its' name (see page 1). Two other copies are at 00317 and 00985. The earliest copy in 1944 included the charter of Legacy and headings in red printing. 'Melbourne Legacy offers friendship and help to the dependants of our departed comrades.' Headings included: Help and advice to mothers or guardians; Mothers' Club; Senior Widows' Club; Housing and repairs; Legal advice; Medical, dental and optical care; Education, Employment, Camps and holidays, Christmas party, Residences, Junior Legacy groups. The Fundamentals of Legacy was a paper offered to the Fortieth Annual Conference of the Legacy Clubs of Australia, held in Ballarat from 7th to 10th November 1968, by the Sydney Legacy Club. It was presented by Legatee Daniel S. Aarons, past president of the Legacy Club of Sydney (1946-47). By resolution of the Conference it was printed by Legacy Co-ordinating Council for distribution upon their request to Legacy Clubs. The first part of the brochure examines birth of Legacy growing from the seeds of comradeship that were sown in war service. Comradeship from the deep friendship forged in war time. The second part examines the personal service that is fundamental to Legacy. It includes a story of burial after a fierce battle at Pozieres in August 1916 where the writer witnessed a mate pledge to the deceased "don't worry, our friends, we will look after your widows and children". The final words of the of the brochure. "Legacy is a magnificent monument whose foundations made from everlasting materials, Mateship, Comradeship, and Friendship. The edifice upon that foundation was erected by the dedicated, personal service of a mere few thousand Legatees of whom it may truly be said, that, Never in the history of social service Has so much been done for so many By so few." The content says: 'Howard Mackenzie, President of Warrnambool Legacy, advised me on 5th February 1989, that L/ Greg Gillespie - son of our Past President James G. Gillespie - presented to Warrnambool Legacy the Gold Legacy Badge given to his father and worn by him during his year of office as President. A speech by Legatee Dono Joynt at a Legacy luncheon on 28 October 1952. His talk mentions that 'Harelands' the Club's fourth residence about to be opened. The Club was in need of funds for the next year. He says; 'I am convinced that this Club can FACE anything, and DO ANYTHING and OVERCOME anything, if the members of the Club are STRONG enough in their desire for whatever it is they want to achieve.' which is the theme of his speech. A document that was part of a folder about the running of the President's Fund, that was created in 1932 "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. The document summarises the history of a fund that allowed President's to make discretionary payments to worthy causes without need to have it approved. It mentions that original and official papers about the fund have been lost so this was an attempt to record what was known. The fund was credited to the late Legatee Walter Berry of the domestic and building supplies firm, Henry Berry and Co. wth money from his late father's estate. An initial fund of £200 (?) was handed to the president with some of the following terms: 1) the funds existence was not to be published or made known, except from President to President 2) money could be loaned or granted in sums as determined by the President of the day, for the preservation of the independence of the recipient 3) The club treasurer must keep the money in a separate account 4) The only persons to be helped must be members of Legacy but no restriction on the reason (business or personal) 5) At the end of the presidential term records handed over may be 'closed' except the ones that loans were involved and the terms of the loans could be disclosed. It is known annual donations of up to £1,000 to Legacy were received from the Howard and Georgina Berry Trust for use in the Fund. See also item 01520 for another summary of the fund's history. Other pages show copies of the original letter, dated 24 February 1933, acknowledging receipt of £50 from the Howard and Georgina Berry Trust Fund to start the President's Fund with agreed terms of use. Jean Salvado the President of the Kingston Widows' Club sent this photo of a display in the Brighton Library. It is 1990 and shows photos of events of the year such as Ron Barrassi, a truck of fire wood, the junior legatee whose artwork was used on Christmas cards, and the poster of 'Lest You Forget'. Photos of plaques at the base of trees at the Shrine of Remembrance. One is of the Lone Pine planted from by Legacy from the seeds of a cone from Gallipoli and planted by Legatee Stan Savige in 1933 in remembrance of fallen comrades of the 24th Battalion. The plaque is in the form of the red and white diamond badge of the 24th Battalion. This tree had to be removed in 2012 due to its age had led to safety concerns. Also a plaque from the Olive tree of peace planted by Legatee Frank Doolan in 1973 which was the 50th anniversary of Legacy. Other trees were for Netherlands' Service Personnel, and the 18th squadron NEI-RAAF Forces Association, and the fallen comrades of the RAAF Beaufort squadrons. There is also a tree for the 'Carry On' Club of Victoria. These photos were taken at the same time as views of the Legacy Garden and photos of the man and donkey statue at the Shrine of Remembrance. Believed to be late 1980s when the garden was renamed for Legacy, and before 1998 when the statue of the Widow and Children was installed. A photo of junior legatees in costume for an Annual Demonstration, the date is unknown. Costumes were reused in different years. These costumes include a beefeater, an English soldier with a bear skin hat, a soldier with a tin hat and a girl in a floral dress. The floral dress costume was used in a scene set in Holland with wind mills in other photos but this could be a different year. It is possible this was taken at a rehearsal by a newspaper and used in promoting the event. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. A photo of L/ Stan Savige with Miss Enez Domec-Carre and Mrs Gilles some of the senior girls. It was at an annual demonstration in the late 1940s or early 1950s as it was published in the newsletter with the news of Legatee Savige dying in 1954. The senior girls are all in their gymnastics outfits with Legacy logo. These were provided free of charge to Junior Legatees attending the weekly classes run by Legacy. Mrs Gillies was the first instructress of Girls' Classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. The pilgrimage was led down St. Kilda Road by the Hawthorn City Pipe Band (it may have started at St Paul Cathedral as there is a church service prior to the pilgrimage). A junior legatee is the flag bearer of the yellow Legacy flag. Sir Weary Dunlop can be seen in the march. President Swan and the President of the Widows' Club, Inez Bruce, are seen carrying wreaths to be laid. This is an annual event for Legacy widows, sometimes referred to as Widows' Sunday. It is usually at the start of Legacy Week, which is usually the first week in September. A letter from Frank Meldrum (?) to Legatee Cyril Smith in May of 1940, to accompany a two page listing of Legacy clubs, their contact details and meeting times. L/- Meldrum was returning to active service. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. A fascinating script of a scene in a Pageant by the Intermediate Legacy Club. Each state or city that had a Legacy Club was represented by a performer in costume that displayed some aspect of their city - for example Mildura was represented as Citrus, by wearing a pickers apron. The dialogue is worth reading and the central character is Peace, who welcomes all the Legacy Clubs to the stage. The final line is that "Legacy is Comradeship". Huntingdale Golf club was the site of many social events for Legatees and Widows clubs. The label states this was Huntingdale Ladies Day in 1993. The photo shows Legatee Graeme McDougall representing the President presenting the trophy to Mrs Kunkel and Mrs Foster. The trophy was called the Legacy Huntingdale Jubilee Trophy. The day raised $7,500 for Legacy. The photos were in an album of photos from 1992 and 1993. An article in the Answer says that the association with the Huntingdale golf club began in 1933 and over the years over $255,000 has been raised for Legacy. Photos from a 10th birthday celebration at a widows club, it is unknown which one. There appears to have been singing and merriment as well as cutting an anniversary cake. The lady cutting the cake is Billie Sims, who was president of the Melbourne Widows Club in the early 1990s. The paper label says Buckley Park Bowling Club were the winners of the Legacy Open Pairs Tournament for the Sir Dallas Brooks Trophy. Runners up were the MCC Bowling Club. These photos were in an album of photos from 1993. Legatee Woodward was one of the presenters. Bowling and golf days were an excellent social event for Legatees as well as a fundraiser. These photos are of a gathering at the Shrine of Legatees and a delivery of lone pine saplings on the back of a ute. Legatee George Woodward was present, also a school girl and a veteran. These photos were in an album of photos from 1993. These are the saplings grown from the seeds collected by President Chas Wilks in 1989 (item 01426). From an article in The Answer in June 1994 the event was the official handing over of the seedlings that were propagated. Present were Minister for Natural Resources, The Hon Geoffrey Coleman and Gallipoli veteran Tom Brain. Legacy has run a programme since the 1970s of propagating saplings taken from seeds of pine descended from a pine tree from Gallipoli and giving them to various clubs, schools and town councils. Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. Presentations are made to schools, ex-service organisations and interested bodies by Legacy Clubs in the hope that they will be cherished as a symbol of nationhood and of its just pride, devotion, courage, selflessness and sense of service to others.A record of Legacy being involved with distributing saplings in 1993. The photos from 1994 show President Woodward presenting flowers to Gwen Gunn, Vera Lang and Irene Noll. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $16,200 - and the president acknowledges with flowers. The article mentions that over 1,200 widows came together for the concert, and the RAAF Central Band was conducted by Sq. Ldr. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. The performers were the RAAF Central Band. Held in December each year. These photos were from a proof sheets 911202A and 911202B. The photos from 1991 show President Sullivan presenting flowers to Inez Bruce, Vera Lang and Joan Redmond. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $14,000 - and the president acknowledges with flowers. The article mentions that over 2000 widow attended the 29th Annual Widows' Club Christmas Concert. The concert is a welcome highlight of the year, widows from Melbourne and country Victoria join together to sing carols and enjoy the music of the RAAF Central Band conducted by Squadron Leader Graham Lloyd. Special guest artist included Ivor Jones (a POW in Changi Prison).
