Radio telephones were used to connect people living or working in isolation with other people.This radio phone was used by ambulance officers,working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, to communicate with the doctor. The SECV had received an ambulance by April 1940. It had been modified for long and rough trips, departing from usual ambulance designs of the time. Ref. April 1940 SECV magazine. Mrs Beveridge (Skippy) lived and worked with her husband on the High Plains during winter. They had immediate contact with the outside world as they were connected by radio telephone with the Commission's (SECV) Bogong office. Hence, measurements taken of the snowfall and rainfall and observations from the experimental raceline are reported to head office of the Kiewa Hydro electric Scheme at Bogong. Ref. SEC magazine March - April 1948 page 25 and photo of the radio telephone in their home (different to this item) page 26. This radio phone is in a metal case with a separate steel lid attached with two large screws on either side. The front has a cream plastic face with open slits. It has a cover to protect the speaker behind it. There are 3 tuning knobs (volume, muting & channel) and a small red light. This type of fork was used back in the days before electrical washing machines were invented. Ladies used to boil water in a 'copper' over a fire and wash the clothes and linen in it. The water was boiling hot. This wooden washing tool was used to retrieve the washing before hanging it on the line.This tool has been carved from wood. The cattlemen's huts on the High Plains were used as shelter during the herding of the cattle on the Bogong High Plains during summer. Wallace's Hut is the oldest cattleman's hut and was owned by the Wallace family.This long handled spade was used by the 3 Wallace Brothers to dig 6 post holes for the posts of Wallace's Hut in 1889. On the 6th hole they struck rock 6 inches down but they persevered and succeeded in chipping away the rock to the required depth of 3 feet. The handle is in two pieces joined with a hinged pin with hooks on the ends. The poster also promotes activities that are on offer to the visitor in Mt Beauty and the broader area. The poster is also significant as it shows the progression in marketing by the Alpine Shire and the Mt Beauty Chamber of Commerce from the early days of marketing Mt Beauty as a tourist destination. This poster is historically significant as it shows the style of tourism campaigns of the 1990's with the slogan "Mt Beauty The Name Says It All", which is a play on the name Mt Beauty and was promoted by the Mt Beauty Chamber of Commerce and the Alpine Shire. Due to relative long distance to haberdashery stores majority of children's garments were hand made by a local talented seamstress or mother/relative. This apron is very similar in style to the other children's clothing which indicates it could have been made in the early - mid 1900's. It is preventative of aprons which little girls wore over their dresses at the time. This items has good historical significance because it shows the style of aprons which little girls wore over their dresses in the Kiewa Valley during the early to mid 1900's. This bonnet could have been part of a Christening outfit which matches the same style of "KVHS 0235" The quality of the garment and the fashion style it represents is both historical, and is of the fashion in that era. It has Christian religious implications and values of the time frame of regional life in the early 1900s. It is hand made possibly by the mother of the child being christened. The bonnet was probably worn at a christening in one of the Kiewa Valley churches (denomination unknown). The importance of the event to family and friends is shown by the quality of the garment. These style Christening items were often worn buy several children of the one family , both boys and girls. Other items that match this outfit are KVHS 0235. This meter belonged to the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. This meter measured the power used by all the houses in Mount Beauty and provided an inked one month period chart. This information was used to quantify and pay for the power consumption to the Transmission and Generating Department from the Distribution Department which then went on to bill local consumers.The State Electricity Commission of Victoria constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from the late 1930's to the 1960's. The construction towns of Bogong and Mt Beauty used electricity which was measured by this meter resulting in billing customers for the power they used.Black box with black painted wooden frame top and bottom screwed on holding clear glass at the front so that the instruments can be seen. This sewing machine would have been used by some ladies to mend and make clothes for the family as shops were some distance away and to sew items for Church and School fetes.Used in the Kiewa Valley.Black metal Singer sewing machine with gold decoration and writing on its body and platform. It sits on a wooden tray which is hollow under the body with a separate space on the right hand side. The body of the machine can be lifted by hinges attached at the back. This would enable items to be stored in the hollow part of the box. Similarly the hollow section on the right hand side, which hasn't got a lid. The body has the needle and cotton attachments on the left and a handle for working the machine on the right. There is a metal rod at the top for the cotton reel. The body is attached to the platform at each side forming an arch. The top of the box has metal along its perimeter. At each end of the top of the box there is a plate with a small hollow rectangle in the middle enabling an attachment such as a board to be inserted for an extended bench.Front & back of body: "Singer". and at front on an oval brass plate: "The Singer Manfc. Typewriters pre dated computers. This typewriter was possibly used in an office or at home. It was used with an inked tape which may have been only black or had both red and black ink along it. Multiple copies of the material being typed were done using carbon paper inserted between sheets of paper. The margins and size of paper measurements are in inches.The keyboard slopes up to a vertical plane. On top the area is flat where there is a small gap which exposes the metal keys. The cylinder that holds and enables the paper to be moved is long with controls at each end and a large lever that returns the cylinder to the left. Behind the cylinder there is a compartment. The keys hit an inked tape (black or red and black) which forms an impression onto the paper. Mechanisms, using the correct buttons, enable margins etc. to be pre set. This typewriter sits 3 cm high from a base. Vinyl deep red/black cover sits on top covering top and sides to protect the typewriter from dust. The stereoscope was an interpretation device used to interpret aerial photography and the landscape. It was used by National Parks Victoria located at Mt Beauty to look at aerial photos so that they showed up the relief of the topography and therefore looked 3D.Used by National Parks Victoria staff located at the Mt Beauty office during the 1970's and early 1980's.Dark green wooden box with padded protection around the perimeter and on lid where 2 rectangular pieces of wood touch the stereoscope. The box is fitted with wooden dividers that fit around the stereoscope. The stereoscope is green metal with folding legs and sides attached to allow the stereoscope to sit on a surface. The instrument has 2 round glass ('mirrored viewing lens') cylinders eye distance apart, that allow light in from the side swinging doors. The amount of light is constricted by a rectangular piece of metal at the top of each leg. The box has swing clips used to close it and a metal swing handle all on the front side.The hinges are reinforced (and offer protection) by additional rubber pieces at each end. This would separate it from other mail and protect it. A satchel would enable the mail to be collected by different people using modes of transport.This brown leather rectangular satchel is well worn with stitching around the perimeters of the front and back where it is attached to the side pieces. The back piece extends a little at the top where it is stitched to a reinforced piece that has a curved handle covered by steel and fastened with a stainless steel plate with rings. The leather then continues as a flap also stitched to the piece with the handle. The satchel is fastened with 3 large press studs.The sides of the satchel extend and fold into the inside and can be fastened to each other with a large press stud. This may be to protect the contents. At the front centre a transparent pocket is stitched on presumably for identification.
