Lewis Construction company had the original contract, but was replaced by the State Electricity Commission in 1942. Photo No. 2 - Bogong Village was the first village built to house workers and their families working on the Hydro electric scheme. Construction commenced 1940. The single men's quarters are slightly right of centre on the foreshore. Calling cards, also called visiting cards, visiting tickets, or compliments cards, originated in their paper and ink form in France in the 18th century and their popularity quickly spread across Europe and the United Kingdom. Victorian calling cards were large and could be extremely ornate, with the names usually printed instead of handwritten. Women's cards were squarish and fairly large, usually about 2.5 x 3 inches. Men's cards were smaller and more rectangular, meant to fit in a breast pocket, while women often carried their cards in specially made cases of silver, tortoiseshell, ivory, or mother-of-pearl. The Orbost Workers' Band was started in 1889 by Donald and Archie Munro. The band folded after the town was devastated by floods in 1893. Charles Spink reformed the group in 1905. It split in 1908 and the breakaway band was named the Orbost Workers Band. The two bands, The Orbost Workers and Orbost Town Band would often compete against each other. Eventually, in 1913, the two bands amalgamated to form the Orbost Municipal band. The old Orbost Municipal Band recorded its last meeting in 1941 -a lack of effort and membership. The new Orbost Municipal Band was restarted by Clem Heather (a previous member) on Wednesday 20th September, 1961 and continued into the late 1980s when lack of interest caused it to become defunct. David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Beryl initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Dave walked across the gardens to work at the MCG. He never drove or owned a car. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. Electoral roll details: 1919 68 Park Street, Hawthorn 1922 24 Louise Avenue, Mont Albert 1924 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert Dave Mair was a very keen sportsman. The woman named as Mattie was Martha Dunham Brooks b1892, Camberwell. She was the daughter of Arthur 'Empire' Brooks and his wife Mary Jane Wilson who lived at 21 York Street. They also had twin boys: Thomas Moffat Brooks – b. 1899, Surrey Hills; d. 1906 and Edwin Dunham Wilson Brooks – b. 1899, Surrey Hills; d. 1971 Heidelberg. The donor remembered the later as a builder of 11 York Street. Martha m. Clifford Ernest Cairns in 1935. Mattie Cairns was the donor's godmother. This is part of a large donation of material from the Deakin, Mair and Young families. This report highlights the ongoing need to review and if necessary update and change policies and priorities if need be. The report explains that to provide recommendations and suggestions three working parties were established with two Legatees in charge of each group. In group1, 47 Legatees were involved, group 2&3, 59 Legatees involved in each group. Each group had a budget to work to and designated areas of Legacy activities to investigate and report on e.g. group1 would report on Accommodation, Housing, Handicapped Dependants, Firewood - refer to appendix A. Reports and suggestions are made in appendix B. Some recommendations suggest that Legacy and Legatees do not cease providing services but refer suitable applicants on to similar activities with other organisations if the need arises. This was due to declining numbers of Legatees to supervise, and those under the care of Legacy to paricipate. Due to declining numbers of Legatees and the number of families requiring help in certain areas, the report shows that Legacy needs to alter the way in which it delivers some of the services to Widows and families but still maintain the services that Legacy has provided previously.
