Textile - Lace Trim
This is a very dense machine made lace reminiscent of a Valenciennes style. The folk art style roses and interconnecting six petal flowers are set into quite a dense net ground. The trim appears to have been made on a Pusher machine - although it was only able to make the lace pattern and the net. Any outline had to be filled in later by hand using an embroidering machine. Nottingham stopped making Pusher lace probably in the early 20th century but it continued to be made in France. The Pusher machine was a variation on John Heathcoat’s Bobbinet machine developed by Samuel Clark and James Mart in 1812. It takes its name from the rods which pushed the carriages through the machine. The Jacquard apparatus was adapted to it in 1839. The Amess family owned Churchill Island from 1872 to 1929. This lace collection was owned and contributed to by four generations of Amess women. section of lace trim, with very dense valenciennes pattern, small lowers and leaves interwoven with larger motifschurchill island, lace, janet amess lace collection, trim, amess, machine -

Photograph - Digital Photograph, Alan King, Former bootmaker's shop, Main Road Eltham, 29 January 2008
The former bootmaker's shop is one of only three remaining original shops from the early 20th century in what was once Little Eltham, the others being the present day Cafe Zen-Den at 736 Main Road and the former Burgoyne General Store and Post Office, present-day San Antonio Barbershop at 820 Main Road. Jarrold Cottage or White Cloud is known by many to be associated with the Skipper family, and has been since 1944 when Lena Skipper, wife of Mervyn Skipper purchased the cottage. She purchased it from the Estate of Thekla Jarrold who had died in March of the previous year. By the time Thekla died, she had lived in the Jarrold Cottage for 50 years. Thekla Alvenia Sissilia Ellian married John William Jarrold in 1888 at Clifton Hill. They started their family there but when John’s father William (who was married to Hannah Coleman) died in 1893 the family moved to Eltham. William had married Hannah Coleman in 1856 at his home in Eltham. William had arrived in the colony in 1848 so it is believed the Jarrold Cottage goes back at least to 1856 and possibly early 1850s. For a short period of time the cottage was rented to the Police as a temporary Police Station whilst a new and more permanent station was built further up the hill in 1859. The cottage was originally located closer to the Diamond Creek but was subject to flooding so was relocated to its present position on top a mound of rubble placed there from the nearby quarry next to the Dalton Street school (on Main Road). By 1916, John Henry Clark, a photographer who took many early photos of Eltham relocated from Fitzroy to Eltham and boarded with recently widowed Thekla Jarrold and her family. He changed professions from photographer to boot and harness maker around 1931 and Thekla had a small bootmakers shop built ifor him in the corner of her property next to the family home. J.H. Clark remained living at the property until his death in December 1956. At some stage after Clark's death, Lena Skipper is recorded living at the property having relocated from Montsalvat following the death of her husband Mervyn. The property continues to remain within the Skipper family as of 2023. Covered under Heritage Overlay, Nillumbik Planning Scheme. Published: Nillumbik Now and Then / Marguerite Marshall 2008; photographs Alan King with Marguerite Marshall.; p47This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. Ref: Alan Holt records - This property has had a number of different names throughout its history. William Cook, a farmer, bought the land it stands on in 1876. In 1882 he was rated for a house (not the current one) on 11 acres. The present house was built in 1885 by John Clark, an auctioneer. In 1888 the Tower Hill estate and the home (Tower Hill Lodge) were auctioned, but the house was not sold. In 1889 the house was purchased by Captain Shepherd. Records show that in 1894 the owners were Mr Thomas and Mrs Hortenzia Howell. They named the house 'Corcovado'. Later they added a study with a corner designed to provide views from the Dandenong Ranges around to Mt Macedon. In 1944 Mr and Mrs Lionel Adams renamed the house 'Varndean'.This is one of the earliest surviving houses in Surrey Hills.A colour photo taken from the street at the rear of a Victorian-style house with ornate chimneys and a slate roof. Copy of letter from Jonathan Falder to James Cheetham, 2 January 1866
Jonathan Falder was considered the founder of Wesleyan Methodism in Tarnagulla. He was said to have preached in 1858 from a tree stump near the Poverty Reef. This letter was written less than a year after the opening of the large Wesleyan Church which still stands, albeit without its roof which was destroyed in a fire in 2000 . James Cheetham was both secretary of the Shire of Bet Bet and a councillor for the Borough of Tarnagulla. He was the Mayor of Tarnagulla for four years. James also entered the Victorian parliament and was the MLA for the Dunolly Electorate from 1 April 1889 to 1 June 1890. This meant he was holding three positions at the same time. James died in 1890 from injuries received in a buggy accident. Donald Clark Collection.A photocopy of a letter from Jonathan Falder to James Cheetham, both of whom were residents of Tarnagulla. Smith Letters
John Smith was a carpenter and/or timber merchant who emigrated from England to Australia. He settled in Launceston in 1834-6. In 1836 he married Susannah (of Birmingham, nee Bradney/Bradbury, daughter of a gunsmith). Their first child was born in Launceston in 1837 (records in Wesleyan Church). They set out to try the Californian goldfields but at Tahiti they received such bad news about the Californian goldfields that they changed their minds and returned to Port Phillip. Apparently, John Smith's nephew George died of T.B. less than a year after arriving at Tarnagulla. John Smith, Susannah and two of their 9+ children are buried in St Kilda Cemetery (Wesleyan sector). They were lifelong members of the Wesleyan Church. A John Smith, carpenter was listed as being a business in Wellington St, St Kilda 1856-1860. Donald Clark Collection.Eleven photocopied pages. Four pages are a letter (date circa 1990s) from S.A.S. Smith of England to Lorna Goltz of the Tarnagulla Gold n Rocks Museum. It explains the context of some accompanying photocopied historical letters. All the letters relate to S.A.S. Smith's ancestors who lived in Tarnagulla for a time. The photocopies are of: 1) Letter dated 15th April 1857, written and sent from St Kilda by John Smith 2) Letter dated October 24th, 1866, written and sent from Tarnagulla by John Smith 3) Letter dated October 17, 1866 written and sent from Tarnagulla by George, nephew of John Smith. -

Functional object - Singer Electric Sewing Machine, The Singer Manufacturing Company, 1950
Singer was first established as I. M. Singer & Co. in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer with New York lawyer Edward C. Clark. Best known for its sewing machines, it was renamed Singer Manufacturing Company in 1865, then the Singer Company in 1963. The Singer company began to market its machines internationally in 1855 and won first prize at the Paris world's fair that year. They had offices established in both Sydney and Melbourne by the mid-1960s. The company demonstrated the first workable electric sewing machine in 1910. Singer was also a marketing innovator and a pioneer in promoting the use of instalment payment plans, making their machines more affordable for many people. According to its serial number, this machine was manufactured in 1950 and was one of the new models designed to be more portable as it only weighed about 10 KG.This sewing machine is of local, national and international significance as it represents developments in technology and the impact this had upon the work of women. The Singer 99 was a sturdy and reliable machine that was easy to use. Lighter than other machines of its time, this machine weighed only 10 Kgs. It is mounted on a wooden base with a small compartment under the balance wheel to store accessories and bobbins. It has a 'Bentwood' (polished plywood) cover which also provided some room for storage. The machine is driven by a small electric motor and a light to illuminate the work area. It is decorated with gold decals and a filigree pattern. It includes a knee control which is inserted in a hole at the front of the machine. The serial number EG045782 indicates it was manufactured in 1950.Across the top in gold script: "The Singer Manufacturing Co. / Made in Great Britain" On light cover: "SINGER" Plate with specifications also attached.singer sewing macnine, domestic appliances, women's work, technology -
