This is the site of the first roadside art gallery - Hassall's Roadside Gallery created by the artist son of an artist. Ian Hassall was the son of John Hassall who was among and may have been the first of the British poster artists. The gallery opened Saturday July 14, 1962 at 1215 Main road, Eltham by the director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Eric Westbrook. Situated on the left hand side of the main road, about a mile and a half beyond Eltham, towards Research, near Coleman's Corner at the intersection of Wattletree Road. The property has remnants of a stone quarry, probably for the purpose of gaining stone for local road making. Paintings were hung on screens and removed at night for safety. Large pedestals displayed sculpture and jewellery. All types of hand made art work was displayed. Access to the exhibition and grounds was slightly lower than the level of the road. They were encircled by a narrow little moat formed by a small tributary of the Diamond Creek accessed by a small well built stone bridge built by Ian Hassall with local stone. The Gallery later became known as Hassall's Gallery Bazaar antiques, furniture, curios bought and sold. It operated through to the early 1990s. The property has been derelict and neglected for some years. At one stage a shipping container sat near the entrance. This series of ten photographs illustrate the extent of the vegetation which has taken over the land, evidence of rubbish and a possible fire. Informal 12 hole golf event, played on Grand Final weekend. This event was started by a group of friends when there were few official golf tournaments played at Peterborough. The event was a stroke event with "mystery handicaps" ie you didn't know your handicap until you finished playing. The event was played on the Sunday of Grand Final weekend (except initially); Friday night traditionally was tea at Boggy Creek Pub and a Fishing Comp on Saturday. The name came about because three of the regular players, Ivan Voss, Bob Loader and R. McKendrick had a hut at the top of the dunes near Crofts Bay. They had a clinker boat on the beach as well. They subsequently built a house in Childers St. It ceased when the original participants were no longer able to play. The date of the first winner is 1980, last recorded winner is 1995. In 1914 the Williamstown Grammar School trustees transferred trust in the school grounds and donated the original school building to the Department of Education to establish a state government high school for Williamstown. This meant the dissolution of the Williamstown Grammar school board and the school's senior students either went on to other grammar schools around Melbourne or enrolled at Williamstown High School. Williamstown High School continues today and the original Williamstown Grammar School building is still in use in the school grounds at Pasco Street. This would have been the end of Williamstown Grammar if not for the highly respected young head of the junior school, Mabel Molland. At the Williamstown Grammar School Speech Night at the end of 1914, the Williamstown Chronicle (Saturday 26 December 1914) reports that management of the school has been taken over by Mabel Molland and that she addressed the assembly saying, 'acceding to the expressed wish of many, I decided to carry on the junior school, and wish to thank the parents for their hearty cooperation in my undertaking'. The reputation of Mabel Molland as a teacher of enormous ability and continuing support from the community would enable the school to survive through depression, war and troubled finances, to see the reinstatement of a school board in 1956, the reintroduction of secondary education in 1978 and a now thriving multi-campus independent P-12 school in Melbourne's west. This photograph is the earliest known image of Mabel Molland (standing in the the third row, second from the right) with her students. The Jubilee of this church was held in 1933. "Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church. BALLARAT, Sunday Jubilee celebrations of the Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church were well attended in the week end. A basket picnic on Saturday at Eureka Stockade reserve was followed at night by a social gathering, at which a birthday cake was cut by Mrs. Amor, a foundation member. On Sunday special services were led by Rev. J. A. Moscript, assisted by the young men of St. John's Church. The church was originally founded, by the late Mrs. J. P. Murray to mission to the needs of the busy mining community which existed in Canadian in early years." (The Age, 06 November 1933.) PATON MEMORIAL CHURCH - An interesting tree-planting ceremony was performed in the grounds of the Paton Memorial Church on Saturday lost. Trees were put in by the scholars of the Sunday school to commemorate the enlistment of all the boys who had in any way been connected with the church. Sunday school, and Young Men's Club. The Mayor (Cr Levy) spoke in terms of praise of the lads who had enlisted to fight for right against might and the tyranny of Prussian militarism. The Hon. R. McGregor MLA., and the Revs. A. H. Moore and W. Rowlands were among those present. on also Mesdames J. P. Murray and McGowan, two of the founders of the church. During the afternoon Cr Levy planted a tree in honor of Mrs Murray. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the congregation. (The Age, 06 November 1933.) This church was in the middle of a Chinese neighbourhood, and the 1800s the leprosarium was in the vicinity. This was reproduced from a copy of the 1926 flyer relating to the Annual Speech Night. See vertical file re Mont Albert Primary / Mont Albert Central School. It was reproduced with the consent of the school archives in the early 1980's by Kenneth Tudor Hall. Mont Albert Primary was built in 1917 and was designated as a Central School in 1918 when Forms 1 & @ were added. It remained as such until the 1964 when the secondary years formed the basis of a new high school, known as the Box Hill North High School, (later changed to Koonung Secondary College). The original building was constructed of solid red brick and consisted of seven rooms. In May 1924 a further four rooms, also in red brick, were added. The school opened with an initial enrolment of 147 students in Prep to Grade 6. A further 72 children were admitted during the year, making a total enrolment in the first year of 219. The land facing Kenmare Street was purchased in 1919, adding another 2 acres to the 5.5 acres which the school occupied in 1917. The first Principal was Charles Hyland, who was assisted by three teachers. The first official meeting of the School Council in May 1917 reveals that the building was in some senses a shell, requiring additional input from parents. Mention is made of the need for asphalting of playing areas, providing a letter box and electric lights for the lobby, double room, office and sewing room. Mont Albert was the first School in Victoria to have the interior purely constructed of Victoria hardwood, from floor to ceiling. Photo from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. The photo was taken at a Stanhope reunion held at Kooyong Tennis Club on 3 November 1984. Names aren't labeled but Matron Dorrie Vines appears third from right. The documents include a letter sent to former residents on 27 September with details of the night signed Bill Saggers on behalf of the committee of Alison Ball, Frank Bury, Ron Dennis, John McBain, Bill Saggers. Two pages are a list of names of attendees, including their maiden names and Legatees that were attending. There is also an overseas telegram from Ken Clarke to the Legatee Robertson expressing apologies that he would not be able to attend the reunion. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01837. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. MEYER COLLECTION - FALLS CREEK PHOTOS In 1947 a determined group of like-minded State Electricity Commission (SEC) staff including Ray Meyer, the chief surveyor of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, had a common interest that revolved around the skiing potential of the snow-covered high plains which included what is now the resort of Falls Creek. The six SEC employees, Toni St Elmo, Ray Meyer, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson (together with their families) banded together to secretly build a 'hut' that was the first ski lodge at Falls Creek. Using a road built in 1930s to gain access to Falls Creek, their hut project was carried out in secret as efforts by other skiers were blocked by H.H.C. Williams – the engineer in charge of the Hydro Scheme. In 1946 Ray Meyer made a trip to the Lands Office in Melbourne. He came away with a 99-year lease on three acres that was ideally suited for a hut designed by Lloyd Dunn. Adrian Ruffenacht (Design Engineer for the KHS) had suggested where the group should build because of easy access to a spring for water. Much of the building material required was scavenged from derelict huts on the high plains. Due to the need for secrecy, the determined group worked on the hut in the evenings and weekends to avoid detection. During the building period the group had met at Echidna Rock (now known as Eagle Rock) where Skippy St Elmo announced, "This is my favourite ‘Skyline’.” And so the first lodge in the area at Falls Creek Ski Resort came into existence. With the development of the International Poma in the 1970s, the Skyline Lodge, which was sited between the ski-lift’s pole one and pole two, was demolished. However, the legacy of Ray Meyer, Toni St Elmo, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson and Skyline lives on in the vibrant atmosphere of Falls Creek Resort. CLEVE COLE HUT was built in 1937 for the Ski Club of Victoria, to commemorate pioneer skier, Cleve Cole, who died on a disastrous ski trip across the high In August 1936 three men, Cleve Cole, Mick Hull, and Howard Michell, skied from Mount Hotham across the Bogong High Plains to Mount. On reaching the mountain they became trapped for four days on the summit ridge by appalling weather conditions. For three days they followed the Big River through rough country before deciding that Howard should continue alone to find help, leaving Mick to care for Cleve who was barely able to continue. Three days later a search party, raised after Howard had reached Glen Valley, found Cleve and Mick. Within two days the group arrived at Glen Valley where, tragically, Cleve Cole died later that night. In memory of Cleve’s life and his pioneering work in the Victorian alpine country it was decided to build a refuge hut on the mountain. Charles E “Ernie” Barrie started constructing a Chaff mill on the corner of Brooklyn and Station road in 1900. It soon became a thriving business and was ideally located close to the railway line. Ernie and his father William and other Barrie brothers had been operated travelling chaff cutters in the district of Melton and Werribee. Within a short time the mill expanded into two big sheds in partnership with his brother James E known as “Ted”. The eldest brother William was in the Manager living in Melton South. In 1906 Ernie applied for a railway crossing on Brooklyn Road to have direct access for railway trucks to be shunted to the mill to be loaded. The Mill was also had the first phone to be connected, No 1, and No’s 2, 3 were the Golden Fleece and Macs Hotels. In 1906 Ernie married Jessie Lang daughter of the Head Teacher at Melton State School No 430 (1896 –1917). The Barrie house on the north side of the mill was completed in August 1906. It survived for almost 60 years until demolition. Chaff mills were very susceptible to fires and often burnt down and would be rebuilt again ready for the peak of the harvesting season. The final demise of the Mill occurred in a spectacular blaze on the night of Friday 2nd December 1977, just before the earth tremor as reported in the local paper. Brian Dobson the local photographer lived close by and captured the night blaze. A video was also taken of the action by the fire brigade. My parents Bon and Edna Barrie were living at 19 First Avenue, and took colour slides of the smouldering ruins in the half -light. Ironically Bon had spent the first year of his life (born in April 1909 and sister Mary born October 1907) at the house beside the mill. Trethowan’s Chaff mill in Brooklyn road was also destroyed by fire, which stated in the evening on Tuesday April 28th 1987. It was established in 1910 by Dixon Brothers, followed by, Ebbot & Kebby, Robinson, Trethowan and Butler and was with the Trethowan family when it burnt down. Melton South was small a community referred to as Melton Railway Station. Member of the community raised the idea to have a public hall. In 1909 Cr Barrie, Mr Nesbitt and Delany formed a committee to build a community hall. Cr Barrie donated the land and The Exford Hall was completed in September 1910 later to be named Victoria Hall. It was demolished in 1992. Colour slide in Barrie archive. In April 1910 the Ernie sold the Mill to Glover Onians (HSK Ward) family moved away to a property in Trundle NSW. Ernie had acquired 640 acres (a square mile) and leased a further 1920 acres of adjoining land. It was the practise of the farmers in the area at the time to buy up or lease the surrounding land from the 640 acre crown land blocks to make up acerage for a viable wheat farm. His wife Jessie found the climate to be very hot and when the Darlingsford property at Melton was put up for sale in the latter part of 1910 and was passed in at the auction. My grandfather saw this an opportunity to return to Melton. The negotiations to Darlingsford were finalised on May 11th 1911. Barrie bothers with connections to Chaff mills and farming in Melton from the 1900s William Henry, Charles Ernest, James Edwin, Samuel John, Robert, Arthur Roger, Albert Walter. "The theatre itself was located in a barn close to the village pond. Its location is indicated on the attached 1827 map of Hampton Wick and the Swan arrowed where tickets were to be had. The picture of Ye Swan around 1900 is probably not too dissimilar to how it would have looked in 1797. One of the regular patrons at the theatre is believed to have been William, Duke of Clarence (later King William IV, uncle of Queen Victoria). The Duke lived in Bushy House about a mile away from the village and was a known devotee of theatrical entertainments. The theatre had disappeared by 1865. It would have been a touring company who were playing on the night of 3 October 1797." Boxes were 3 shillings, Pit seats were 2 shillings and seats in the gallery were 1 shilling. Tickets could be bought at the printing office in Kingston or from Mr Ansel of Adam and Eve in Kingston or from Mr Pattenden of the Swan in Hampton Wick. "First Love" is a 1795 sentimental comedy play by the British playwright Richard Cumberland. It was first performed at the Drury Lane Theatre in May 1795. Frederick Mowbray becomes the protector of Sabrina Rosny after her abandoment by Lord Sensitive. The Agreeable Surprise is a 1781 comic opera to music by Samuel Arnold and a libretto by John O'Keeffe. The work in two acts was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket (London), on 3 September 1781. It was one of the most performed works of its kind in London in the last quarter of the 18th century. In England the 18th century saw the flourishing of theatre as a popular pastime. Many theatres were enlarged and new playhouses built in London and the provinces. This item was kept as a souvenir / memento and brought to Australia by an early settler.A very old program from the Richmond Company at the Theatre Hampton-Wick. It is white with black print. [from EDHS Newsletter No. 104, September 1995:] ALAN MARSHALL SCULPTURE. In our last Newsletter brief mention was made of the bronze sculpture of Alan Marshall outside the Eltham Library. Sculptor Marcus Skipper has now completed the installation of his almost life-size work. The setting and location are ideal and Marcus has really captured the typical Marshall character. It has attracted much favourable comment since its completion. Most members are generally familiar with Alan's life and work but for those not so familiar and for the sake of the record we include these brief biographical details. Alan Marshall, A.M., O.B.E., Hon.LL.D. (1902-1984) was born at Noorat, Victoria and became one of Australia's most famous authors. His association with the Eltham area began in 1920 when he started his first job as a junior clerk at the Eltham Shire Offices, Kangaroo Ground. In the 1940s he spent some time living at Research. From 1955 he lived in Eltham for nearly 20 years. Disabilities resulting from polio as a young child did not prevent a wide range of experiences. Alan's occupations have been listed as clerk, night watchman, fortune teller, freelance journalist and author. He has been patron of many disadvantaged Children's Societies. Alan's books are numerous and include novels, short stories, children's books, history and travel. Among the best known are his autobiographies "I Can Jump Puddles" and "This is the Grass". Others include "These are My People", "Ourselves Writ Strange", "People of the Dreamtime", "The Gay Provider" and "Wild Red Horses". [from EDHS Newsletter No. 104, September 1995:] ALAN MARSHALL SCULPTURE. In our last Newsletter brief mention was made of the bronze sculpture of Alan Marshall outside the Eltham Library. Sculptor Marcus Skipper has now completed the installation of his almost life-size work. The setting and location are ideal and Marcus has really captured the typical Marshall character. It has attracted much favourable comment since its completion. Most members are generally familiar with Alan's life and work but for those not so familiar and for the sake of the record we include these brief biographical details. Alan Marshall, A.M., O.B.E., Hon.LL.D. (1902-1984) was born at Noorat, Victoria and became one of Australia's most famous authors. His association with the Eltham area began in 1920 when he started his first job as a junior clerk at the Eltham Shire Offices, Kangaroo Ground. In the 1940s he spent some time living at Research. From 1955 he lived in Eltham for nearly 20 years. Disabilities resulting from polio as a young child did not prevent a wide range of experiences. Alan's occupations have been listed as clerk, night watchman, fortune teller, freelance journalist and author. He has been patron of many disadvantaged Children's Societies. Alan's books are numerous and include novels, short stories, children's books, history and travel. Among the best known are his autobiographies "I Can Jump Puddles" and "This is the Grass". Others include "These are My People", "Ourselves Writ Strange", "People of the Dreamtime", "The Gay Provider" and "Wild Red Horses". Lone Pine was an action that featured one of the most famous assaults of the Gallipoli campaign. The attack was planned as a diversion for the Australian and New Zealand units that were to breakout from the Anzac perimeter by capturing the heights of Chunuk Bair and Hill 971. At 5.30 pm on 6 August 1915, the Australian artillery barrage lifted and from concealed trenches in no man’s land the 1st Australian Brigade charged towards the Turkish trenches. The troops paused on reaching the Turkish trenches, finding that many were covered by timber roofs. Some fired, bombed and bayoneted from above, some found their way inside and others ran on past to the open communications and support trenches behind. Others advanced as far as "the Cup" which was where Turkish support units were located and from where the Turks counter-attacked. By nightfall, most of the enemy front line was in Australian hands and outposts had been established in former Turkish communication trenches. The Australian Engineers dug a safe passage across no man’s land so that reinforcements could enter the captured positions without being exposed to Turkish fire. Having captured the Turkish trenches, the Australians now tried to hold what they had taken while the Turks desperately and determinedly tried to throw the Australians out. From nightfall on 6 August until the night of 9 August a fierce battle ensued underground in the complex maze of Turkish tunnels. The Australians succeeded in drawing the whole of the immediate Turkish reserve. Six Australian battalions suffered nearly 2,300 killed and wounded at Lone Pine. St Patrick's Day is celebrated on 17 March. A St Patrick's Day March was held in Ballarat. According to the Ballarat Courier of 03 February 1916 a festival was organised in Ballarat to celebrate St Patrick's Day: "ST PATRICK'S DAY FESTIVAL - There was an excellent attendance last night at St. Patrick's Hall to make a rangments for the annual celebration of St. Patrick's Day Festival. Mr A. W. Hager occupied the chair. The date allotted by the V.R.C. committee, Friday, 24th March, was accepted, and the festival will take place on that date, with the usual race meeting on the Miners' Racecourse, and entertainment at Her Majesty's Theatre in the evening. The secretary was instructed to appeal for the hearty co-operation of the different societies, and to ask for a holiday on 24th March. The amount of stakes and the racing programme were left in the hands of racing committee, whose report will be dealt with at the next meeting. The following officials were appointed to carry out the celebrations:--Chairman, Very Rev. Father Kennelly; vice-chairmen, Rev. Father Henneberry, T. J. O'Loughlin, and A. W. Hager; general manager, Mr M. Newton; Secretary; Mr F. T. Kierce; treasurer, Mr William White; collecting secretaries, Revs. Fathers Kennelly and Henneberry; entertainment. Mesers D. J.Ward, J. Warwick Farm was established by my late grand parents Polly (nee Mary Ann Cole) and George Barratt and their 5 children George Jnr, William, James, John (my maternal Grand Father) and Teddy. Their story is told in a book "The wine of Courage" written in 1977 by N.M. Roberts ISBN 0 7223 1003. Their story started when their bank closed their doors on 13 April 1893 and they lost their cafe business in South Melbourne. Two days later, they were ready to head for a new start in Queensland when they saw in the morning paper that the Dandenong Ranges had been thrown open to land release to people. A few days later, having been granted land they headed to Ferntree Gully. From there they walked to the new holding in what would become Olinda. Then George with his sons help had to build a shelter for the family for the night. They chose to name the property "Warwick Farm". Work on the house started a few days later with help from neighbours Mr. Dodd, Mr Beattie, the O'Sheas and others. Come November, Ruby was born. Then bushfire burnt down the newly built house. Back to a bark hut until another house could be built. The new house became a guest house at the suggestion of a neighbour, when George couldn't sell timber and was waiting for crops. The first guests visited in 1898 and another baby, Percival, was born. ....................................................... It was George's son Jim, who was a skilled carpenter and axeman who extended the home to take from 12 to 30 guests. Letter to the Trustees outlining the outcomes of a recent meeting, as the minute book was unable to be located. Below is a summary of the letter. The death of W.H. Paterson is mentioned and the recommendation to the Committee that the clubhouse by named in his honour was unanimously accepted, however requires the agreement of the Trustees. The remainder of the letter covers the past five years. The Victorian Association of Blind Cricketers are requesting the erection of a shelter shed and scoring boxes. Complaints have been received about horses using the park, which have been passed to Malvern Council who advise they have also received similar complaints from the general public. A fence is required but a lack of finance has delayed this action. The Clubhouse is being used for more activities including a dance class, indoor bowling club, pottery and craft work, therefore a new switchboard and rewiring were completed. In October 1955, the State Government offered funding through local councils, however despite a representation to the Minister, the Malvern Council were not willing to expend funds to the Association as they had committed to build an Elderly Citizens Club. A large signboard was repainted and a new signboard erected at the front entrance, along with a light controlled by a clock. The Clubhouse has also been used one night per month by the local branch of the RSL and occasional use by the Teachers College for inter College sports. There has been cooperation with the L.T.A.V. (Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria) during tennis championships, and although the Committee recognise the need to do more with the area, the impending homes been built at Ballarat and Bendigo have been a limited factor.
