"Villa Alba is of significance for the outstanding late Victorian painted decoration throughout its interior. The consistently high standard of design in the decoration, and high, and at times, superb quality of its execution, the variety of illustrative techniques, the variety of illusionist effects and the hierarchy of treatments between the rooms of the house all contribute to the significance. The decorative scheme is also of significance as a fine example of the work of the leading Melbourne decorators, the Paterson Brothers. It is one of their first interiors to depart totally from the use of pre-prepared wallpapers of repetitive designs and it is a rare and comprehensive extant example of their domestic work. The decorative schemes in the ground floor hall, the dining room, the drawing, the vestibule, the stair hall, the upper hall, bedroom 1 and the boudoir are also individually of significance as outstanding examples of Victorian decoration.." The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. This type of balance scales allows precise measurements to be achieved by ensuring that the balance's fulcrum is essentially friction-free by attaching a pointer to the beam which amplifies any deviation from a balance position; and finally by using the lever principle, which allows fractional masses to be applied by movement of a small mass along the measuring arm of the beam. The standardization of the weights used – and ensuring traders used the correct weights – was a considerable preoccupation of governments throughout this time and inspections were held regularly. When the Weights and Measures Act was passed in Victoria in 1862 local inspectors were established throughout the colony to ensure accuracy particularly in the weighing of gold. J Allan Anderson graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1902. The following year he joined a law practice in the Victorian country centre of Stawell, where he met and married Ethel M. Allingham. Moving to East Kew, Melbourne, in 1917, where his son attended Trinity Grammar School. By March 1921 the family had exchanged their annual summer holidays at Mentone for permanent residence when they moved into Captain Dawson's former home, 'Riviera' off Mentone Parade. Disappointed with standards at this son's new local school and now living in a fast-growing town and district, in 1922, on a train journey to his office in the City, 46-year-old solicitor J.A. Anderson came up with the idea to form a new grammar school for boys in Mentone.

noombapee is an etching and lithograph by Gunditjmara and Keerray Woorroong artist Vicki Couzens. Couzens is a multi-disciplinary artist focused on strengthening her language and culture through research and creative projects. noombapee was created during a 2018 Collie Print Trust Printmaking Fellowship at the Australian Print Workshop. The work is an example of Couzens’ reclamation and celebration of Indigenous languages. The title is a Gunditjmara term which approximately translates to ‘have mercy’ or ‘forgiveness’. The word ‘noombapee’ appears multiple times in the lower right corner of the composition. The left side of the work includes a letter to the editor of the Warnambool Standard, dated 3 April 1940 and authored by Vicki’s ngapoon (paternal grandfather), Nicholas Couzens. Couzens explains that ‘he was an activist and advocate for our rights living on the Framlingham mission.’

Length of 5/8ths of inch or approx. 15.5mm diameter steel bar, which has been heated and formed at one end to give an eye approx. 32mm internal diameter and hammered and ground to form a point edge at the opposite end forming a point bar. Used by Ballarat Tram crews to change tram track points. Standard equipment to all tramcars (two each). This particular point bar was reportedly located at the Lydiard St. and Sturt St. intersection for use by inspectors and other tram crew to change the points at this intersection without obtaining a point bar from the tramcar itself. Taken by a Brisbane Tramway Museum Society member at the time of closure. The point bar was repainted by the BTMS in the green colour scheme prior to presentation to the BTPS/BTM during the 1992 COTMA Perth Conference to Carolyn Dean. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. St. Matthew's Church has historic significance as the town's church and physical and social focus for the community. The standard design buildings are good examples and important streetscape elements. The war memorial cross is the area's monument to the 20th century wars and its modest scale in comparison with the granite Eltham and towered Kangaroo Ground memorials illustrates the lack of affluence in the town and surrounding area. The grouping of church, school, store and post office is typical of country villages throughout Victoria. The building was also used for Sunday School, a school and a hall.1 The St Matthew’s Church and hall at the corner of Church Road and Kangaroo Ground-St Andrews Road, were built in the early 20th century in the standard rectangular style of the times. The intact belt of Radiata Pines was common at that time. The war memorial concrete cross is the area’s monument for the 20th century wars. It is much more modest than those in Eltham, and particularly in Kangaroo Ground, demonstrating those townships’ comparative affluence.2 Early settler J Hughes, who donated the land to the Church of England, was the first to be married at St Matthews when he married Rachel Coutie. In later life he became a minister of religion.3 One much-liked preacher was George Hollow, who with his sister playing the harmonium, conducted church services at Panton Hill, St Andrews and Christmas Hills, for many years.This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. This photograph was donated by the Bread and Cheese Club, Melbourne but it is not know to what group or institution it was originally given. It is a copy of a well-known photograph of John Feltham Archibald, taken about 1910 when he was obsessed with all things French and was known at the time as Jules Francois Archibald. John Archibald (1856-1919) was born at Kildare near Geelong (so is not a native of the Warrnambool district) but he lived for some time in Warrnambool with his family. He began his working life with the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper and its successor, the Warrnambool Standard before going to Melbourne. In N.S.W. in 1880, he established with John Haynes, the Sydney Bulletin , a journal that became the most influential one of its day, promoting nationalism and fostering Australian writers and poets. He left legacies to establish the Archibald Prize for artists and the Archibald Fountain in Sydney. This photograph of John Archibald is of some interest though it is a widely-known one and is not original. It is kept because John Archibald, a national figure in Australian History of some importance, spent his school years in Warrnambool in the 1860s and 70s where his father was a local policeman. He went to Henry Kemmis’ Warrnambool Grammar School and wrote about his time here in later years, He also commenced his career as a journalist with the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper and later the Warrnambool Standard newspaper before going to Melbourne. This is a black and white photograph of John Archibald, mounted on cardboard. This is a set of 30 photographs of contractors installing the Army Survey Regiment’s new Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 printing press in Lithographic Squadron’s purpose-built printing building at Fortuna, Bendigo in 1990. The computer-controlled five colour lithographic offset printing press provided the Royal Australian Survey Corps vastly improved printing capability, as the five colours for a standard topographic map was printed in a single pass. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. The 150th celebrations of Eltham Primary School included the launch of this book to commemorate the event, titled "We Did Open a School in Little Eltham". The title is taken from a line in a letter from first head teacher David Clark who opened his first private school in a bark hut. This publication of some 262 pages far exceeds the standard of most school commemorative histories, both in content and presentation. The three joint writers are all parents of students at the school. Ian Anderson, Barry Carozzi and Tarja Fellowes have spent many months researching and writing. Metamec was a manufacturer of domestic clocks in the second half of the 20th century, and was based in Dereham, Norfolk, England. The name "Metamec" is derived from "metal-work and mechanics". The company started as an offshoot of the furniture manufacturers Jentique in about 1941, which made boxes for instruments and bombs during World War II.The first Metamec model was a mains-powered mantle clock numbered "701" (approx. 1947). All clocks produced by Metamec were produced to a high standard, The company declined in the late 1980s and went into receivership in December 1984 and sold to FKI of Halifax, West Yorkshire, who continued to use the name until 1993. Henry had previously tried to interest the directors of the Ford Motor Co in producing agricultural machinery, but when this met with no success he set up the new company to market the tractor he had created. Cupboard is original to Lighthouse. This nineteenth century cedar furnishing has two doors and one internal shelf. It remains in the lighthouse although its original location was probably the lantern room, where similar surviving cabinets are more typically found. It was purpose built for the lighthouse with a curved back to fit the proportions of the tower interior with the wood reputed to have originated from a partition in the assistant lightkeepers’ houses, and the cupboard doors possibly crafted at a different time. Curved cabinets similar to this example can be found at three other early lighthouses investigated by this study. It is possible that these specially designed cabinets were included in the standard complement of furnishings provided to the colony’s lightstations by the Victorian Public Works Department. Other similar cabinets with curved backs remain in the Point Hicks Lighthouse and at Cape Nelson (two examples )and Cape Schanck, which has a curved front as well as back .The Gabo Island cabinet has first level contributory significance for its historic value, uniqueness, provenance to the lightstation and clear association with the functions of the lighthouse lantern room.Two door wooden (cedar) cabinet. The Tellatouch was developed in the American Foundation research laboratory and resulted from one of the first AFB research projects, a major effort in the mid-1940s to help deaf-blind people. The device helped end social isolation for hundreds of deaf-blind children and adults. The Tellatouch provides a means of communication between a sighted (or blind) person and a deaf-blind person who can read braille. The keyboard has three rows of ten keys each and a standard braille keyboard on the fourth row. At the rear of the machine is a round metal plate with the braille cell in the center. The deaf-blind person rests a finger on the braille cell. Pins rise to form the equivalent of the letter key that is struck. The body of the device covered in beige vinyl, with a hinged lid at the front which lifts up to reveal the keyboard. This store was built in 1881 and opened as a branch of Pearce Brothers main store which was further along in Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. The store in this image opened around early June 1881 and was described in the Bacchus Marsh Express as "quite above the usual standard of stores in towns of a similar or even much larger size. The building is most substantially built of brick, and measures 58 feet by 26 feet, with walls fourteen feet high inside. The interior is most elaborately fitted with shelves and glass cases covering both side walls and two ends formed by small offices separated from the main store by glass and wood panelled partitions, with a passage way between to the storeroom at the rear", Express, (Bacchus Marsh, 11 June, 1881, page 2). The building was designed by one of its proprietors T. G. Goods such as spades, shovels, tubs and wringers are arrayed on the footpath in front of the store. At the front of the shop under a verandah stands a man, possibly one of the Pearce brothers who owned this business. Next to the store is a vacant block of land with a white picket fence. A sign erected above the fence advertises: “ Pearce Bros. Chaff. Hay & Oats. Produce. Dealer. “On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. Photo. 108 Elizabeth St. Melbourne. Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus shop, Sussex Street, Linton. Dating the photograph: The photograph can be dated to after 1887, when John Angus purchased the shop building (originally owned by Thomas Austin) from B. N. Dodd. 'W. Angus': From 1887 until the late 1890s the shop was run by John Angus' wife Wilhelmina Angus, who often advertised her business in the local newspaper, the 'Grenville Standard' (see photograph of advertisement, Registration no. 2019-346). It is not known when Mrs Angus retired, but it is understood that her son William then took over the shop. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) It is not clear whether the "W. Angus" in the sign refers to Wilhelmina Angus or to William Angus.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph, which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows a two-storey brick building, and next to it a double-fronted shop. The two-storey building is the original Grenville Shire Hall, built in the mid 1860s. The fence outside it is being used to post notices. Two large pine trees are between the fence and the building. The smaller shop next to the hall has a verandah supported by round timber posts, and signs across the front of the verandah read "Tailor" and "W. Angus". Two men engaged in conversation with each other are standing to the left under the verandah. The Commonwealth Ericsson Wall Telephone was adopted in 1901 by the Post Master General as the standard magneto telephone throughout Australia. It was designated by the Australian Post Office as: "Telephone No.1 - Magneto Wall, Commonwealth Type" The No1 was widely used in country areas and new installations of this type continued throughout the 1920s. Although classified as obsolete in 1951, several were still in service in country areas into the mid-1960s before the phone systems were fully automated. The phone was originally connected to a 'party' line (several connections to a common wire), and the winder was turned in various combinations of long and short turns (being the codes unique to each individual connection) to alert the other party of an incoming call. Anyone could listen in on a party line, although courtesy prevented it occurring most of the time. Central telephone exchanges rendered the party line obsolete. Vintage wall telephone The case originally housed two No6 dry-cell batteries to power the speaker (early models used a pair of Leclanche-like wet-cell batteries - the drawing from 1911 indicates that wet-cell batteries were still in use at that time). Batteries became obsolete when the phone was connected to a central exchange.
