This album contains photographs of many local and beach scenes such as view over Warrnambool, Botanic Gardens, Hopkins River and Bridge, Warrnambool railway station, Proudfoots, Thunder Point, Christ Church and the War Memorial. There are a couple of photographs of groups of people picnicking on the main beach. The newspaper cutting showing firemen dousing the last of the flames of the fire has onlookers including four children in the foreground. The Ozone Coffee Palace was built in 1890-1891 and burnt down February23, 1929. It was one of the largest fires in Warrnambool It was designed by Mr J McLeod. It was grand in design and decoration. The term Coffee Palace was used to describe temperance hotels which were built during the 1880’s -1890’s. They typically were multi-purpose and had a large number of rooms for ballrooms and leisure activities. Coffee palaces were aimed at families in coastal areas and inner city locations. Examples of some are The Windsor Hotel Melbourne, Ozone, Queenscliff and Kilbreda Convent in Mentone. This album has social and historical significance as it shows a collection of local scenes which is a record of familiar scenes such as the gardens, Hopkins River and beach scenes. The Rotunda in the Warrnambool Botanic gardens was constructed in 1913 at a cost of 297 pounds. It is situated toward the central eastern side of the gardens and is visible from many viewpoints in the gardens. The building is octagonal in shape with a steeply pitched tiled roof with the bandstand open area elevated to approximately 3 metres. The gardens designed by William Guilfoyle, commenced in 1866 have been a popular meeting place as well as entertainment and social community events. This dish would have been a souvenir or memento. These are two administrative record books from the Warrnambool Town Council which took over from the Warrnambool Borough Council in 1883 and existed until 1918 when it became the Warrnambool City Council. .1 Warrnambool Town Council letter book dating from 1904 to 1918 containing copies of letters written by the Rate Collector, Thomas Beattie .2 Warrnambool Town Council Contract Book dating from 1902 to 1909. These items come from the house "BIRCHWOOD" in Koroit Street, Warrnambool belonging to Dr. Angus and family. Dr. William Roy Angus (1901-1970) practised in Warrnambool from 1939 to 1970. In his later years Dr. Angus was an important ophthalmologist. He was prominent in Warrnambool in both medical and community affairs. The Angus home "BIRCHWOOD" at 214 Koroit Street (the site of the Warrnambool Police station today) was noted for its beautiful garden, lawns and croquet court and used as a meeting place and entertainment centre for vice-regal personnel and community organisations.These items are of considerable interest as they are connected to a well known doctor in Warrnambool and a notable house..1,.2,.3 These are three wooden door plates with a fine ridged front and a curved top and base. They have four holes to be used with nails to attach to the door. .4, .5 These are two wooden key hole covers with half spherical shapes at the top, ridging and carving towards a tapered base. .4 has a brass circular plate at the back with two small decorations protruding at the top. This watering can would have been used some decades ago to water pot plants and small plants in the garden requiring individual watering. Today watering cans are still used but mostly they are made of plastic although some cans are made in other materials for decorative reasons. Enamel is a hardy material but it chips when the object is knocked or dropped. This watering can has no known local provenance but is retained as an example of a common household item from early in the 20th century. This is an oval-shaped enamel watering can. This is a programme of a greyhound racing meeting held in Warrnambool in August 1975. The meeting was held in Botanic Park, in Botanic Road Warrnambool opposite the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. Today greyhound racing meetings in Warrnambool are held in Koroit Street on a track in the Warrnambool Showgrounds and the Botanic Road site is now the location of a Catholic Primary School. This programme is retained as a memento of the 1970s when the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club meetings were held in a park in Botanic Road, Warrnambool. This is a soft cover booklet of 16 pages. These three badges were issued as fund raisers on Children's Day in 1918,1919 and 1941. The Children's Flower day arose out of the League of Young Gardeners established in 1916 to assist the war effort by encouraging children to cultivate garden plots at home and at school. The Children's Flower Day included lectures and lessons at school related to garden cultivation. This is a pocket spring balance. It would have been used last century in our district by market gardeners, hawkers and other itinerant workers and possibly also used in some small businesses. In households it could also be useful for weighing jam fruit, vegetables etc. Spring balances are still in use today.This item is retained as an example of a spring balance manufactured 80 or more years ago.This is a set of spring balance scales. The spring is fixed at one end with a hook attached to hold an object to be weighed. The top end has a ring to hang the scales up. The spring mechanism is enclosed by a steel cover. The front scale face is made of brass and both this face and the rear spring casing are fastened by three rivets. On the front is a spring-loaded blade which has equally spaced scale markings next to it on one side. These items have no provenance but would be useful for display purposes. They are typical of the Victorian era displaying the romanticized beauty of children and young women. Flowers, gardens and pets were also displayed in this manner. This is all amply displayed in these two prints. Items were also quite readily and cheaply mass produced and thus available for many people to cheaply decorate their homes in the latest styles. Reproduction was possible and popular resulting in an enduring style which could be said to be eclectic The Victorian Era is named after the reigning monarch, of the second half of the 19th century Queen Victoria.This pair of prints has little provenance but being typical of the era will be useful for display. These are a matching pair of framed prints of a young boy and girl with a wide dark green border around the edge with a row of dots on the outside of the glass. The boy is holding posy of violets and the girl a fan. The edge is finished in a metal, possibly tin. Both are backed with heavy card. He enlisted in Casterton, Victoria on 26/08/1916. The Nominal AIF Roll indicates he was a clerk, single, son of James Critchlow and Cof E and a Gunner 33322. in 1924 he married Brice Violet Payne in Victoria. These items relate to the Life Membership of the Warrnambool Horticultural Society awarded to Mrs Gladys Angus. The Warrnambool Horticultural Society was founded in September 1863 and the first Show was held in the old Temperance Hall in the December of that year. Today the activities of the Horticultural Society are combined with those of the Warrnambool Agricultural Society. Mrs Gladys Angus lived in ‘Birchwood’ in Koroit Street, Warrnambool and this property was noted for its fine garden lay-out and display. Mrs Angus took a keen interest in the garden and greatly assisted the activities of the Warrnambool Horticultural Society. Her husband, Dr William Roy Angus, established a practice in Warrnambool in 1939 and was a for many years. Following his death Mrs Angus donated her husband’s collection of historical medical equipment to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and this collection is on display in the Port Medical Officer’s building today. These items are of interest as they belonged to Mrs Gladys Angus. This is a tea tin from the business of Rolfe and Co., a wholesale grocery and importing business founded in Melbourne in 1854 by George Rolfe Senior, a merchant and politician. George Rolfe died in 1871 and the business was then run by his son, George Rolfe, Junior. The business continued until at least the late 1930s. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a keen sportsman and he began holidaying in Warrnambool for some years in the 1870s when he started buying land in the area. By the early 1880s Rolfe owned 50 acres in Warrnambool and established his holiday residence at Lyndoch near the mouth of the Hopkins River. He improved the original site with the addition of a large garden, stables, jetty, boatshed, water well, chaff and bone sheds, reservoir etc and bought other properties including Shipley on the Allansford Road and the adjoining property Fairy Hill. He continued managing the Rolfe and Co. business in Melbourne until his death in 1919. Today Rolfe’s Lyndoch property in Warrnambool is the site of an aged care facility. This tin is of considerable significance as it is a memento of George Rolfe who established the property of Lyndoch in Warrnambool and was a prominent land holder in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Note that we have another Rolfe tea tin but it is in very poor condition compared to this later acquisition). This is a rectangular-shaped tin with four sides originally painted yellow but now showing considerable rust. This badge commemorates the awarding to Warrnambool in 1928 of the title of Victoria's Ideal Town. This was an award sponsored by the Sun News-Pictorial Melbourne newspaper and 1927-8 was the first year of the award. Warrnambool celebrated the win with a week's celebrations in February 1928 of street processions and entertainments in the Botanic Gardens . Tourism has been an important industry in Warrnambool for over 100 years. In the late 19th century Warrnambool was promoted as a spa resort offering a mild climate, coastal swimming and hot and cold seawater baths. Today visitors come in winter to see the Southern Right whales at Logans Beach and other coastal areas and they come in summer for a beach holiday. The William Guilfoyle-designed Warrnambool Botanic Gardens have always been an attraction for both locals and visitors. This is a Warrnambool folding post card sold to tourists and locals in the mid 20th century. The card contains photographs of Warrnambool scenes – the Hopkins River mouth, the Botanic Gardens, Liebig Street, Fletcher Jones gardens etc. Warrnambool has been promoted as a tourist town since the late 1800s and attracts visitors in both the summer months (beaches, coastal scenery etc) and the winter months (visit of Southern Right whales and major sporting events). This is a manual hedge trimmer which has a push pull action. It is not a very common garden tool possibly a lot slower to use than clippers. This metal plaque was dug up in a Warrnambool garden in the early 1980s. It appears to be an item that would have been attached to a wall or building and is possibly a representation of a British military figure involved in military campaigns or colonial administration in a British Empire outpost in the 19th century or early 20th century, perhaps in the Middle East or in north Africa. It could also be a non-British military figure from the same areas. This item is of minor interest as an object found in Warrnambool but with no known details of what it represents. . These coasters depict scenes from Warrnambool – the Botanic Gardens, The Hopkins River mouth and the Wollaston Bridge. All are areas of historical and tourist interest. The coaster were produced to raise funds for Peters Project in Warrnambool, a charity organization dedicated to bringing improved cancer care services to Warrnambool. The organization was founded in 2008 by Vicki Jellie in memory of her husband Peter who died of cancer. The major aim of the organization was realized in 2016 when the South West Regional Cancer Care Centre was opened in a new building in Ryot Street and services to assist cancer patients in Warrnambool continue to be extended. The footbridge which extended from the facility to the landscaped garden and water features is now gone. The footbridge and garden were previously part of a former hat factory in Sherbourne Road Eltham which has in the past been used for various purposes and presently a self storage business. The Karingal Yallock Creek passes through the front of the land and the creek environs are the subject of significant and unusual landscaping works, including some cascading water channels. Some of the landscaping was damaged by the Christmas Day floods of 2011, but the main elements remain intact. The landscaped area (as distinct from the factory itself) is the subject of a Heritage Overlay under the Nillumbik Planning Scheme. The basis of this overlay is a Heritage Report by Graeme Butler and Associates in 2006. As well as an assessment of the landscaped area, it includes one background information on the history of the site (although a complete history would require more research). The site was part of Crown Portion 3 of the Parish of Nillumbik that remained as the Montmorency Farm until early in the twentieth century. The 1911 subdivision of this farm created Lot 7 of some seven acres, which is the site of this factory. The Heritage Report lists the various owners of the site. From the rate records and aerial photos it is concluded that the site was used as an orchard and farmland until the 1940s. William F Crellin, orchardist, owned the site from 1912 to 1923. Then Edmund Williams owned it until 1951. In 1955 the site was owned by Rupert V. Kirsch and this is the name anecdotally associated with the hat factory, where the well-known brand of Fayrefield Hats were manufactured. The Nillumbik Festival was introduced as a replacement for the Eltham Festival following the disbandment of Eltham Shire Council in December 1994 and the creation of Nillumbik Shire Council. It was an attempt to draw away from Eltham and be more inclusive of the wider communities in Nillumbik. However other local communities had their own festivals and the concept of a Nillumbik Festival was never widely accepted by the community and it shortly reverted back to the Eltham Fesitval in 1997. The building was demolished exactly 25 years after the southern wing housing Engineering and Planning on the upper level and the Eltham Library on the ground level was opened in celebration of the Shire of Eltham's centenary. Video has lots of distortion and noise, and sections of clips dubbed over. Immediate initial footage of Jenni Mitchell talking about asbestos claims in the Shire Offices (Sigmund Jorgensen standing behind her) advising Council did a review of the building several years previously and had been cleared of health problems. Harry Gilham addresses the meeting on the subject of the Eltham War Memorial and Memorial Gardens and how Council believe a roundabout in the vicinity is of greater importance. Beatrice Irvine was the daughter of former Victorian Premier Sir William Irvine. From age 13 she lived at ‘Killeavey’ off Laughing Waters Road (later accessed from Reynolds Road). In 1923 she married James Morrison and the couple received Killeavey as a wedding gift. The property supported fruit and vegetable growing as well as an impressive botanical garden. But James died in 1936 after a period of ill health, leaving Beatrice to support their six children. To make matters worse, the house was totally destroyed in the Black Friday bushfires in 1939 but was rebuilt. Beatrice became involved in community issues. In particular, she was an active member of the Eltham Women's Auxiliary, which was formed in 1945 to raise funds for the establishment of an Eltham War Memorial. From the outset, it was decided that this would take the form of a Baby Health Centre, a Pre-School and a Children’s Library, set in a garden of remembrance. Thanks to tireless fund-raising, the project came to fruition in the 1950s when, one by one, the three children's welfare buildings opened in Main Road (having previously been in temporary premises): they are collectively known as the Eltham War Memorial site. Beatrice continued to live at Killeavey and became well regarded as a botanist and naturalist. She died in 1989 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with her husband and one of their sons. The (rebuilt) house has since been demolished. All that remains is a fragment of the garden. Grace Mitchell, a talented artist in later life and baker, managed a pastry shop business near the corner of Mount Pleasant and Main roads, Eltham in the 1950s. Shortly after her marriage to Arthur Mitchell in 1948, Arthur incurred a head injury from an accident and was unable to work. Grace realised she needed to be home to care for her husband as well as earn an income. She managed the bureaucracy of council permits, and made modifications to her home with savings to get the business off the ground without having to borrow money. Grace and Arthur were avid gardeners and would grow, wash and mince vegetables for pasties while Grace handmade and rolled the pastry. They cooked and minced their own meat for the pies and the fruit for the sweet pies came from their orchard at the rear of the property. She also baked scones and cakes. With weekend visitors travelling to Eltham on the train for days trips, her reputation grew as the spot for afternoon tea. Grace’s daughter Jenni mentions the visit of dancer, Robert Helpmann and U.S. actress Katherine Hepburn in her Grace Mitchell: a short history [2012]. Reminiscences in We did open a school in Little Eltham: Eltham Primary School 209, 1856-2006 a history [2006] include a mention of Grace’s famous pastry shop and the Sunday afternoon visit by Helpmann and Hepburn. Grace operated her pastry shop for over 16 years. She supported the Shillinglaw Cottage Preservation Campaign to preserve the cottage through its Flavour of Eltham community cookbook published in 1964 and hosted cooking classes in the new Living and Learning Centre. Grace Mitchell passed away aged 95 years in 2011.
