Victorian Bands' League
Letter, Council for Music in Schools, 1939
This letter from 1939 makes reference to an article written by Mr C. Mullen, the then Head of School Education (Victoria) in the "Lantern". The Chairman of the Council for Music in Schools congratulates Mr Mullen on his success. This is no doubt due to the implementation of school instrumental programs across the state due to the money from the Gillies Bequest. Many schools in Victoria started up school brass bands, fife & drum bands or orchestras as a result of this bequest. This letter is a rare item in our collection. While not directly related to banding history, there is a contextual element in that C. Mullen presided over an expansion of school instrumental programs which included brass bands. Ballarat and District Irish Association
Image, Joseph Gilles Biggar, M.P., c1864
Joseph Gillies Biggar was a Belfast pork merchant. The Protestant faith has given more leaders to the Irish rebels than the Catholic faith, such as Grattan, Davies, Butt, Mitchell, Parnell, Shaw, Biggar, etc., and all, without exception, were Protestants.(http://www.marxists.org/archive/connolly/1911/connwalk/2-rebirel.htm) "Looking through the long list of those who were present at the Home Rule Conference, one may see the names of men, young or obscure, who were to achieve fame in the movement, and, in some cases, to exercise a decisive influence on its development. The earliest that springs to the eye is " Joseph Gillies Biggar." It was the first time that that misshapened form, with its homely face, its broad smile, its shrewd and fearless glance, was seen ; and the rasping voice, and odd and jerky mode of speaking, was heard, at a nationalist gathering. Biggar was then forty-six, a Presbyterian, head of a successful firm of provision merchants in Belfast, a member of the Municipal Corporation of Belfast, and chairman of the Water Commissioners; and was to commence soon his extraordinary career in the House of Commons. Formerly of Station Works, Wakering Road, Barking, Essex, Henry Browne & Son were important British compass makers. The company was founded in the nineteenth century in Barking and London. They were respected English instrument makers who made fine quality compasses, ships clocks, inclinometers, sextants and chandlery items for over 140 years. Their "Dead Beat" compass, which was well dampened to reduce oscillation, was fitted to many Allied ships during the Second World War. Sestrel was their famous Trade Mark brand. Poster - Recreation, Town of Warrnambool Swimming Baths, ca. May 1884
The poster advertises these Swimming Baths as “the most complete in the Southern Hemisphere”. In February 1877 a Baths Company (1050 shares) was formed in the town of Warrnambool for the establishment of the baths at the south end of Gillies Street. The baths were filled with sea water from Lady Bay, originally pumped by a windmill situated near the current Surf Lifesaving Club and carried by iron pipes to the Public Baths; later the water was pumped by a gas motor. Hot and cold fresh water baths were advertised. The gentlemen’s bath was 100 feet long and 50 feet wide, of graduating depth. A second bath, solely for ladies, was 60 feet long by 30 feet wide. Hot Sea water Baths were also part of the institution, and were sought after for their ‘wonderful curative powers’, and ‘incomparable’ as a ‘tonic for the feeble’. In June 1881 the Hot Sea Baths were opened, and both hot and cold water baths were supplied at reasonable charges. Patrons came from near and far to receive the benefits. The manager of the Baths was J. Kirkpatrick. The Baths Company struggled for several years without success, so in 1883 the baths were sold to the Borough Council for 1250 pounds. The original shareholders received nothing for their outlay; the overdraught was over the sale price. In May 1884 the Council announced that an estimated they has spent 1000 pounds in improving the baths since purchasing them and were now returning an income of 11 per cent. Historically significant to Warrnambool and the recreational facilities available in the 1880s to 1900s. The remains of the baths are still visible to the public today.Poster on heavy cream paper, landscape orientation, with coloured print. The poster advertises the Warrnambool Swimming Baths. It has several drawings such as Middle Island and the Merri River Mouth with vessels in the water, The inside of the Baths facility, the men's baths with the adjacent bathing rooms and figures in and out of the water, a cottage with figures in the garden, and fenced buildings with a windmill and aqueduct or pipes. The text describes the location and advantages, the opening times and various costs. It was printed in Ballarat by F.W. Niven & Co. Compass, 1940's
Henry Browne and Son Ltd, of Barking, made aviation and nautical compasses, clocks and dials. The company made compasses for aircraft notably, Spitfires, Tiger moths and Concord. Henry Browne was born in Lewis, Sussex in 1842 and died in Barking in 1935. His company was a well respected English instrument maker that had been making and selling fine quality compasses, ship's clocks, inclinometers, sextants, and chandlery items for over 140 years. It started in a factory in Brightlingsea, Essex and moved to Barking in 1929. The Trade Mark brand Sestrel was used on all their equipment. Their “Dead Beat“ compass design is well dampened serving to reduce oscillations. It is reported that this design compass was fitted to many Allied ships during WW II. The company went through a boom period in the 1970s but collapsed in the 1980s due to the popularity of cheaper plastic compasses over tradition brass ones. Over more recent years, there has been a consolidation of British instrument makers and the firm of Henry Browne & Son has changed hands a number of times. At last count, it became part of Lillie & Gillie of London in 1985 when John Lilley & Gillie Ltd acquires the assets of Henry Browne & Sons (Sestrel) Ltd, a major competitor for what may be the second time. The model name of Sestral came about via the following.Take first two letters of the word Sensitive then the firs two letter of steady and the firs three letters of reliable hence the trade name of "Sestral". Book - Autographs, Alisan Lanigan, SCVB 30 Year Reunion Booklet and Signatures, 2006
The State College of Victoria Ballarat was formerly the Ballarat Teachers' College. In 1976 it moved from its Gillies Street location to the Mount Helen Campus, now a campus of Federation University Australia. Denise (Walshy) Walsh 1974-1976 Lecturer, Dept of Studies in Teaching, SCVB 1976-1979 Head, Educational Technology Unit I came to the College bringing the lessons I had learned in 20 years (1954-1974) of teaching secondary school students and their parents in the challenging environment of country schools and parishes. Initially part-time, I found the dedication and competence of the staff and their concern for the professional formation and general well-being of students and colleagues to be inspiring. Similar concern and active acceptance extended to me and I wondered – I think we all did – if these qualities were transferable to the ‘dreaded’ Mt Helen. Later, I was invited to upgrade my academic qualifications by applying for the gradually decreasing but still generous study leave that was available. It was granted and I was accepted into the Master’s Program in Educational Technology at Concordia University, Montreal. The staff who generously extended their loads to cover for my absence amazed me. Their support showed that, in truth, the spirit of Gillies Street had indeed ‘moved over.’ More than in any other place that I have worked, all of the staff – including teaching, research, support, service, outside staff, both central and faculty – worked as one by providing mutual service and care in the spirit of a great and long-standing educational institution. In 1958 the Ballarat Teachers' College moved from Dana Street Primary School to a custom built college in Gillies Street. The Act restructured the teacher training policies of Victoria. Ballarat was one of the State Teachers' Colleges which until 30th June 1973, was under Education Department control. Ballarat Teachers' College was renames the State College of Victoria at Ballarat and had its own governing council. In 1975 State College of Victoria at Ballarat moved to the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education campus at Mount Helen, and the name was changed to Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Painting - Mural, French, Leonard, 'The Tapestry' by Leonard French, 1959
Artist Leonard French said of this work:- "The centre panel suggests a tree of knowledge growing out of a jewelled fish (a spiritual accompaniment is intended), and from the tree birds rise, spreading out through the cloud shapes of the other panels. Hands and figures rise from the earth, reaching for the birds. The left hand panel depicts the journey of figures in a boat, the seeking after or journeying to the source of knowledge. The far right hand panel is the garden, figures in a primitive state, a sort of evolution of figures from a primitive garden (the first garden). Visualization, verbalization, music and dance are tools we have to express a concept. The analysis of an art work is a delicate and sensitive task and great harm can be done in an attempt to become verbal about a form which relies upon elements peculiar to itself for intrinsic meaning." Leonard FRENCH (OBE) (08 October 1928 - 10 January 2017) Born Brunswick, Victoria Died Heathcote, Victoria Known for his enormous dalle de verre (concrete and slab glass) ceiling in the Great Hall of the National Gallery of Victoria Leonard French produced a large body of work throughout his lifetime. French won the Sulman Prize in 1960, and the Blake Prize for Religious Art in 1963 and in 1980. He was also awarded a Harkness Fellowship in 1965. In the Queen's Birthday Honours of June 1968 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. In early 1959 Leonard French was commissioned by the Ballarat Teachers' College students to paint a mural. The students were responsible for the payment of the work. When unveiled artist George Bush remarked: "the 1959 students have left something not just to 'oooh' and 'ah' at, but something that is thought provoking, arresting and interesting. This work of art keeps something in reserve and draws you to search for deeper meaning behind the splendour of colour. This mural is not one which will not fade the interest of its beholders, but one which will provide intrigue for generations to come." Originally French intended the mural to be five panels, each entitled (left to right) 'the Journey', 'Man', 'The Tree', 'The Earth', 'The Garden'. The finished mural was reduced to four panels with the central tree incorporated into the panels 'Earth' and 'Man'. Ballarat Teachers' College Art lecturer Arch Cuthbertson explained that the artist:- "Aims at evoking emotional flashed, opening doors to simultaneous thinking and feeling. To accomplish this he juxtaposes the threads of conscious and unconscious images, thus effecting a tapestry that allows many points of reference to converge upon his singular images. Whether the colours offer metaphysical sensations or convey a literal meaning will depend upon the breadth and depth of the viewer's experience. Similarly with the bird - we might well ask is it a defiance of gravity, a metaphysical ascension or the elusive winged knowledge? Again the answer could well be that these three associations have a singular purpose. " This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.A four panel mural by Leonard French, commissioned and gifted by the Ballarat Teachers' College Student in 1959. Art lecturer Arch Cuthbertson was highly involved in this commission. Artist Charles Bush unveiled the mural at the Ballarat Teachers' College in Gillies Street, Ballarat. At that time he said:- "You have left behind you on object which will be full of interest to a lot of people. A work of art, so long as it is in existence, is constantly under review. Most of the good things that keep on going are usually to the uninitiated a little worrying. Many of you will be worried by this, because it does not make its message immediately clear. But come back and assess it again and again." art, leonard french, french, artwork, mural, ballarat teachers' college, class of 1959 -
