A golden running figure sits atop a pedestal that rests on a bell located above two pedestals behind a golden laurel wreath. Diana NIKKELSON (c1943-30 December 2022) Diana Nikkelson is a Ballarat-based Gunditjmara elder. Her grandfather was Watchobaluk. A part of the stolen generation, Diana Nikkelson was one of 10 children, and she had nine children of her own. A founding member of the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative in the late-70s, Diana Nikkelson was a board director for 16 years and chair for six years. She worked on the Bunjil the Eagle installation at the Koorie Playground at Lake Wendouree, and designed the goanna which was etched into the paving along Police Lane in 2006, and has painted murals across Ballarat. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. By 1966 when this poem and article were written by these state school students, the Phillip Island Penguin Parade had become famous and was a regular excursion destination for groups. The poem in rhyming couplets of 4 lines per stanza is typical of its time with human-centric description of the penguins in 'coat and tails', but both the poem and essay also indicate a growing interest in the evolution and behaviour at sea and on land of the Little Penguins. The Gould League of Bird Lovers, Victoria branch, which published these pieces in their 1966 edition of the Bird Lover magazine, was established for both children's 'nature studies' within school curricula, and for adults. The League published many booklets, posters and newsletters for schools and naturalists. The article demonstrates a growing interest in state schools in teaching students about Australian wildlife at the time. Little Penguins are very appealing to humans and given the accessiblity for viewing them at the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, provided teachers and students an ideal springboard for learning. Encouraging both poetry and essay form also indicated a broad approach to allowing students to express their knowledge and attitudes in various ways within the school setting.Also demonstrates the influence of the Gould League of Bird Lovers within the Victorian Education system.Photocopy of article. A British War Medal from World War 1 awarded to Pte J B McLean for his war service in World War One. The British War Medal is a campaign medal of the United Kingdom which was awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces for service in the First World War. The ribbon that would have attached to the medal is missing (mostly orange with white, black and blue stripes either side) and the ribbon bar shows he would have also had a Victory medal. There is part of the ribbon for the Victory medal in the collection (rainbow colour). The ribbon for the miniatures is present but the two miniatures are missing. Included are stock photos to show what the medals and ribbons should look like. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. His full war record is available from the National Archives of Australia (B2455, MCLEAN JBM). In it is a record of this medal being given to him on 16 September 1921.This is an example of a World War 1 medal. The first Legatees were ex-servicemen from World War 1 so would have been familiar with this medal.Silver medal World War 1 medal engraved around the side with Service number and name of JB McLean. Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling around Europe either during World War 1 or just after, before returning to Australia. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. He also had a vesta (match) case from Belfast, so it is likely he visited there. These scenes include the Guiness Brewery in Dublin and the Belfast Town Hall, and a set of scenes from Killarney. J.B. Alan Eglinton Eckford joined the Australian Military Service on the 14th October 1915. He saw service in France during the European campaign. He was killed in action on the 14th December 1917.Circular Medal. (no ribbon). Obverse depicts an effigy of King George the 5th. Reverse has an image of St. George on horseback trampling the eagle shield of the Central Powers, a skull and cross-bones, the emblem of death. Service # 4407 Pte.
