This piece of music has been produced during World War Two (1941) as a propaganda and fund-raising piece for the people of Alexandria in Egypt. It has both Greek and British backing with the headings on the cover in both languages. The music is a march and the title suggests that victory is on the way so the emotions are being stirred to keep up the morale. Egypt in World War Two was still under British influence and Alexandria is a port in Egypt at the mouth of the Nile River. In 1941 British battleships were based in the Alexandria harbor and two of them were disabled by Italian Navy divers. Hence it is not clear why it was the Hellenic (Greek) Red Cross raising funds for Alexandria through the sale of this music which was produced in that city by the Moharrem Press (founded 1938) and composed by Lena Bonfiliou, probably a Greek person. It is not known if this piece of music was bought in Australia or brought back to Australia by an Australian military person during World War Two.This is an interesting piece of music. Its connection to Warrnambool is not known but it is an example of the type of music produced during World War Two to help the war effort. This is a four page piece of music, ‘On the Road to Victory’ (a march) with a front cover, a blank end page and two pages of musical notation. The latter pages have black printing on white pages. The front cover has both Greek and English printing and a colour image of four British and Greek flags resting on a gun carriage with armaments underneath and indications of an explosion. These verses are handwritten and this suggests they originated locally but they were published in a Melbourne paper in 1874 and the writer is unknown.The verses refer to the cricket match in Warrnambool in January 1874 when a team of 22 players representing the Western District played the touring All-England Eleven captained by William Gilbert Grace, the famous English cricketer. The match in Warrnambool, one of 15 matches played in Australia, was won easily by the English team after one and a half days in a scheduled three day match but W.G.Grace did not star, making only 18 runs in the first innings and not required to bat in the second innings. Frank Allan of Allansford,who played for Victoria and Australia and was later called 'the bowler of the century.' took 6 for 28 in the first innings. Grace made a bad impression in Warrnambool with his brusque and insolent tone, refusing to attend the local Ball put on for the English team because the 'professional' players would be in attendance. The poem echoes the lack of goodwill and condescension shown in Warrnambool by Grace and refers to 'the greatest bat in all the world' making only 18 and sends a message to the English team - 'Don't quarrel and don't blow!'This poem is of considerable interest because it shows the ill-feeling in Warrnambool engendered by the attitude taken by W.G.Grace when his English Eleven was playing in Warrnambool in January in 1874. The stand may have been fitted on to the head by the Melbourne firm Ramie Specialty Co. This is a car picnic set made by the English firm of G. W. Scott and Sons who were producers of wickerwork crafts, basketry and luxury leather goods. The business was founded in 1661 and ceased operations in 1967. The picnic set belonged to Dr Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) who was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at Melbourne University. He commenced a practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’ at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in Warrnambool community affairs (Foundation President of Warrnmbool Rotary Club, a member of the local Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee). Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, golf and bowls. He also had a motor car and this picnic set would have been used for family picnics. This picnic set is of considerable significance because: 1. It is a good example of the luxury picnic sets owned by more affluent people in the 1930s and 40s. 2. It has important local provenance as it belonged to Horace Holmes, a doctor associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a rectangular wooden box with a leather covering. It has metal hinges on the corners of the box and two two metal catches on the side with a leather belt and metal buckle on one of these catches with one leather belt missing on the other side. These leather straps were to attach the picnic box to the running board of the car. There are also two metal catches or locks on the front of the box. Inside the box there is a white lining with a plaited wickerwork insert containing spaces for the following: 1. large china container with a silver top 2. smaller metal container with a silver lid 3. small rectangular metal tin with a silver lid. This container still has some loose tea leaves inside 4. four china cups 5. two circular china dishes for jam and butter 6. four china saucers 7. one glass bottle with a silver top 8. one metal phial, silver-coloured 9. one amber-coloured glass bottle (probably not an original) 10. four nickel silver spoons 11. three metal forks 12. three white enamel plates, blue edged Numbers 10,11 and 12 are held in place by leather straps on the inside of the lid of the box 13. two loose metal straps 14. one metal kettle with a handle with cane strapping, a brass lid, a brass spout with an end chain and a metal inscription 15. This book is a reprint of a rare 19th catalogue of Australian tradesmen’s tokens. A token was a coin to the value of one penny produced in the mid 19th century to benefit businesses at a time when there was a shortage of English pennies. The token or penny had the name, business and date on the coin and could only be used in that particular business. In Warrnambool two businesses, those of William Jamieson of Liebig Street and William Bateman of Banyan Street, had tokens (1855 and 1862). Today examples of these local tokens are highly valued because of their historical interest. This book is of interest as a reprint of a 19th century catalogue of Australian token coins. These two trays appear to have been made as souvenirs, perhaps to commemorate the end of World War One, as the halfpennies date from 1914 to 1918. This item comes from the estates of the Misses Ardlie of Warrnambool. It belonged to Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) who was aged 11 when she received the album. Her sisters were Olive (1905-1912) and Dorothy (1910-1993). They were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnmbool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, early settlers in Warrnambool. The Misses Ardlie lived in their early years at Aroona in Princess Street in Warrnambool. The autograph album has handwritten contributions (verse and signatures) from family members and friends and twelve signatures of cricketers from the Australian Test series of 1928-1929. These are mostly English cricketers and include the signatures of Wally Hammond, Jack Hobbs, Harold Larwood and George Duckworth.This autograph book is of considerable interest, firstly as a memento of Agnes Ardlie, a member of a prominent family in Warrnambool in the 20th century and secondly, as an item of some significance in the cricket world with its signatures of some English cricketers on tour in Australia in 1928/29.This is an autograph album with a dark red leather cover and gold writing on the front cover. This tool is one of a collection of tools which are believed to have belonged to Henry Phillips. English-born carpenter, Henry Phillips (1821-1896) came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth in 1849. They lived for some time in Port Fairy before coming to Warrnambool where Henry formed a partnership with Christopher Beattie and established the undertaking firm of Beattie and Phillips in 1865. This firm continued on after the death of the two founders and lasted until the year 2000. In Warrnambool Henry Phillips was involved in the management of the Mechanics’ Institute. This is a hand drill with a composite material handle at one end (for one hand) and a tubular metal piece at the other end for the insertion of a bit or drill.
