The Ringwood Blues football team, a team of intellectually disabled people had a member, Damien Kilner, represent Victoria in a state match in Adelaide. A member of the Ringwood Professional Athletic Club, Rodney Lewis, won the 1994 Stawell Gift. Cr Cheevers also thanked many more Ringwood volunteers in all different areas.` -

The Morse telegraph system had its beginnings in 1836 when Samuel Morse, Alfred Vail and Joseph Henry developed an early model of the system. There are a number of variations on the machine but the operating system is very similar in all and the language is a standardised international code which has been in operation since the 1860's. Morse code consists of five elements, dots, dashes, and gaps of one , three and seven units in length. It is still in use to this day and has been applied to other systems of communication such as amateur radio, mobile phones and communication systems for disabled people. This particular telegraph key possibly has post office or naval origins.Morse code was an important invention in world communication systems and this machine therefore has important social and research significance. It is useful as an interpretive item.This instrument sits on a black rectangular base of black bakelite. Form headed "Ballarat Tramways Punch Register" - with extensive entries required for the record of tramcar operations on ESCo Ballarat tramways. Principally around the number of tickets sold, punched and trips with the pay-in details along the lower edge. HP James notes the use of Bell punches of two types in his notes on tickets - see item 2541. See item 2531 for a 4d ticket that states it had to be Bell punched. Has space for 4d return, 1d night school, disabled soldiers, and various values of dockets. Types of help given by Legatees included helping a widow's daughter buy her first car, providing a widow with a unit in the Legacy flats at Edgley Court, Petersham, providing allowance for text books for further study, also helping a disabled dependent swim in the Olympic Games also a Legacy holiday home for the widows to use. One widow talks about the widows' club and that 'you're never lonely. Green cloth, covered heavy cardboard both sides ticket or pass, titled "Tramway Pass - 1953-54" for limbless and disabled soldiers, issued by the MMTB with MMTB logo on the rear. Ticket printed with paper sheets glued to the cloth on the inside and a photo of the person issued to glued to the right hand side. Issued to John Cameron of 82 Victoria St Carlton, signed by the Secretary (Mr Warner). Note date of pass is 1-10-53, though it appears to be issued in 1955. Available to 30-6-1954. Has a photo of Mr. Cameron. Advised Mr. Cameron had lost a leg during the war. Note - not available on all night services. This booklet contains the official program for the First Australian Paraplegic Games, held in March 1960 in Albert Park, Melbourne. The disabled sports movement which began in the United Kingdom at the Stoke-Mandeville Hospital gradually worked its way to Australia. The attempt to create a sporting movement for people with permanent spinal injuries was seen in terms of opening up opportunities for paraplegic and quadriplegic persons, while also acting as part of their physical and mental rehabilitation. Doubling up as a selection meet for the 1960 Rome Paralympics, the tournament included the following events. The Paravics Sports Club, now known as Disability Sport and Recreation Victoria, was formed in 1962 to help a group of eight athletes with disability compete in national and international sporting competitions. Apart from its goal for advocating for greater sporting and recreation opportunities for disabled athletes, Paravics / Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Association of Victoria also sought to bring awareness and advocacy to the general needs of wheelchair bound persons. The newsletter, the first for 1972, includes numerous news items, including: - Notes from Dr Burke of the Austin Hospital's Spinal Unit, on a year-long of tour of overseas spinal centres, principally in South Africa, France, United Kingdom, and the United States. Burke notes that based on his observations during tour, the standard and quality of treatment at the Austin for spinal injuries is "As good as anywhere in the world and in some respects the best, particularly that of early treatment after injury". Burke also notes the difference in attitudes between different countries in terms of research focus, equipment and technology, the use of sport as a rehabilitation tool for people with permanent spinal injuries, and staffing levels and education. - Job vacancies - News from the Quadriplegic Activities Group. - Information about various auxiliary groups and fundraising efforts. - News about members of the organisation. - A letter from Mrs D. A document summarising the work of Legacy in 2006. It mentions how it was begun by a group of WW1 veterans. At the time there were 126,000 widows and 1,900 children and adults with a disability being helped by Legacy around Australia. There were approximately 6,700 Legatees in 49 Legacy Clubs. In Victoria there were 1,700 Legatees providing support to about 24,000 widows and 300 disabled dependents. There were 13 clubs in Victoria as well as 12 Groups, plus Branches. A photo of boys being instructed by Jim Tierney. The embroidered symbol on their shirts are 'DS' which stands for Don Esses. This was another group of boys that Legacy helped. From notes on the ILC (Intermediate Legacy Club): The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. An event at the Shrine of Remembrance Visitor Centre, the guests include some youths and Ron Barassi. Afterwards they posed for a photo in the Garden Courtyard. The president is George McKenzie. Ron Barassi participated in several Legacy events over the years. Ron was a a junior legatee after his father Ron Snr was killed in action at Tobruk in World War II, aged 27. From the film numbers see also 00686 and 00687. The Visitor Centre was completed in 2003 and provides unimpeded access for the elderly and disabled to the Sanctuary, the Crypt and the Galleries of Remembrance as well as open space for exhibitions and events. The courtyard has an olive tree as a centrepiece. This is the olive tree of peace that was planted by Legacy in 1973 to mark their golden jubilee. At the outbreak of the Second Boer War, Major General Hunter was on the staff of Sir George White's Natal Field Force during the Battle of Ladysmith in Natal. He led a small raid against some of the Boers' guns, disabled them and relieved the town. Promotion followed and he became General Officer Commanding 10th Division. The Division was sent to join Lord Roberts' army camped at the captured Orange Free State capital. Hunter led them in the march on Pretoria. Once Pretoria was captured they still had to deal with Guerrilla Warfare and Hunter was sent south as overall commander of five columns that converged on the Free State army camped at Brandwater Basin, forcing the surrender of 4,314 Boers led by Marthinus Prinsloo. This piece of music has been produced during World War Two (1941) as a propaganda and fund-raising piece for the people of Alexandria in Egypt. It has both Greek and British backing with the headings on the cover in both languages. The music is a march and the title suggests that victory is on the way so the emotions are being stirred to keep up the morale. Egypt in World War Two was still under British influence and Alexandria is a port in Egypt at the mouth of the Nile River. In 1941 British battleships were based in the Alexandria harbor and two of them were disabled by Italian Navy divers. Hence it is not clear why it was the Hellenic (Greek) Red Cross raising funds for Alexandria through the sale of this music which was produced in that city by the Moharrem Press (founded 1938) and composed by Lena Bonfiliou, probably a Greek person. It is not known if this piece of music was bought in Australia or brought back to Australia by an Australian military person during World War Two.This is an interesting piece of music. Its connection to Warrnambool is not known but it is an example of the type of music produced during World War Two to help the war effort. This is a four page piece of music, ‘On the Road to Victory’ (a march) with a front cover, a blank end page and two pages of musical notation. The latter pages have black printing on white pages. The front cover has both Greek and English printing and a colour image of four British and Greek flags resting on a gun carriage with armaments underneath and indications of an explosion. There is a red stamp on the cover (Hellenic Red Cross). The pages are in good condition. Photo of Senator Barney Cooney presenting a cheque to Legacy in front of a gathering of Legacy disabled dependents. Also some of the mothers gathered to watch. Senator Cooney represented the Department of Veterans Affairs when he presented two wheelchairs and a cheque for $7,000 to President George Woodward at Legacy House. The article in the Answer newsletter mentions: 'The grant of $7,000 will greatly assist Legacy's programs by covering the cost of bus hire needed for the regular outings organised during the year and the wheelchairs will provide additional assistance allowing more Junior Legatees to participate in activities.' After the presentation the junior Legatees went to the cinema and 10 pin bowling. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents were invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aimed to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp this also gave the mothers some respite. A special stool made to enable a disabled surgeon to operate while sitting was donated to the College by Mr John Farlow FRACS in September 2003.The stool was made for Gilbert Phillips FRACS (1904-52), the legendary Sydney neurosurgeon and wine connoisseur. Phillips was a gifted young graduate, a protégé of (Sir) Harold Dew (PRACS 1953-55). He went to England, where he became surgical assistant to (Sir) Hugh Cairns, amongst others. He was a consultant to the RAAF during WWII, and at the end of the War returned to England at Cairns’ request. Back in Sydney, he returned to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he spent most of his professional career. In 1951, after a long battle with skin cancer, he had his right leg amputated below the knee. Only a few weeks later he was back working at the operating table, and it was at this time the stool was constructed for him. By now however, he was suffering from secondary melanoma, and he died in September 1952.This object is an interesting example of pioneering apparatus from the days before stools became a familiar piece of theatre equipment.The design of the stool is simple and robust. A substantial padded saddle forms the seat, which is adjustable for height. The saddle is upholstered in red leather. The frame is made from tubular steel, painted cream. In 1995 Legacy was promoted by a tram painted with 'Legacy never forgets' as part of the "Australia Remembers 1945-1995" program marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2. The president was David Millie and his report covers disabled dependents and the activities of widows clubs. The report also recaps events through the year such as the school students' Anzac commemoration service, legacy week and the public speaking contest. Up to the 1980s the annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and photos of significant events of the year. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012. Following council amalgamations, a series of community consultations were undertaken in 1995 to inform the development of a cohesive vision for the newly formed Shire of Nillumbik. A response to the new conditions which people of the Eltham/Diamond Creek/Greensborough and surrounding rural areas found themselves in as a result of the decision by the Victorian Government to amalgamate local governments into larger entities. The case for these reforms was strong, but the amalgamation process did disrupt some people's lives.The need to bring together the people within the new boundaries of Nillumbik was recognised by the Commissioners and the Chief Executive Officer of the Shire, who felt that a good way to begin was to develop a future vision for the Shire. It was decided that the people of the Shire should be asked what they wanted their future to be and a process of consultation was established through which people could express their views. Melbourne LegacyProgramme, Junior Legacy Club Annual Demonstration 1946, October 1946
Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The event had to be deferred due to a transport strike. An article in The Age said: "In view of the transport strike still being in operation on either Friday or Saturday nights, the annual demonstration of the Melbourne, Legacy Club in Melbourne Town Hall will not be held. Efforts are being made to arrange for alternative dates after the strike is settled, and announcement of these will be made." It went ahead on Friday 1 November, as reported in The Argus on 2 Nov 1946: "Preceded by the impressive ceremony of remembrance, nearly 500 members of the Junior Legacy Club gave their annual display of physical culture and folk dancing at the Town Hall last night. Of particular interest were the appearances of the Don Esses Boys and Girls, who are children of disabled ex-servicemen. Their training classes are controlled and financed by members of the Intermediate Legacy Club, sons of deceased ex-servicemen.
