Mr S Bramich, electrical engineer, worked on project. Photo shows model of tram with full-size prototype behind the two men. Melbourne's new orange-coloured super trams have been designed for an era of one-man operators and women drivers. Cheaper to run. Passengers should find them more comfortable and faster. Will go into service early next month (April?). MMTB Chairman, RF Kirby said board would like to recruit women drivers for trams, especially new super trams. "...very keen to have women tram drivers. But union has objected." Kirby said board had no immediate plans for introduction of one-man operators but trams could be easily adapted. One-man operations could be used in off-peak periods. State Government recently approved calling of tenders for 100 new trams to replace Melbourne's oldest trams. 300 trams are 50 years old. New tram is 53 feet long and 8 feet 9 inches wide. Passengers will enter through front door and purchase ticket from seated conductor. Rear exit door. Improvements to new trams are:, forward boarding means all passengers have to pass conductor, reducing missed-fare problem costing about $1M per year, no running board and tram cannot move until all doors are closed. Manual - approx. 115 A4 pages with card board manilla covers white comb bound with a yellow plastic front cover. Titled "MetRail Passenger Fares and Conditions". At about the 1/.3 point has another card cover titled "Summary of "A" Circulars issued in reference to the Metropolitan Transit Authority tickets introduced after 13-11-83. Issued late 1983, prepared by Ian Yarde of the MetRail Projects Officer for use at Stations by Booking and Ticket Checking staff. Has a note on the second page about the introduction of the new fare system for Neighbourhood tickets, rail, tram and private buses - signed by L. A. Strouse Managing Director, dated 13/11/1983. Has an index to the type of tickets. The second parts includes an index, gives changes up to early 1985, including the Bundoora tram extension.In the top right hand corner in red ink "VR - 20" and in blue ink "Group 74". One of a series of tram / bus tickets known as "Schoolboy Howlers" - with a joke line on the rear and that Melbourne's trams and buses were carrying 1,000,000 passengers per day. Use to promote advertising on rear of tickets. Has the saying "It is nice to go damsel picking in the Autumn". Ticket 4d - has been punched "Out" for Section 4. The figure of 1,000,000 likely to be a bit of puffery, though on some days that may have occurred during the 1940s. See item 6949 for about 60 different schoolboy howlers. Passengers could often transfer from one service to another - eg changing from a tram to a bus, without having to pay a second fare. A transfer ticket would be issued on request and this along with the original fare ticket would be shown to the conductor or bus driver at the time of transfer. Check tickets would be issued by a conductor to record that the person had shown a periodical eg scholars ticket. This enabled passenger counting as well. Used by a cable tram conductor to record the number of 2d fares collected from passengers. The Bell punch recorded the number of times a hole was punched in the slip. They were used by the cable trams until the mid-1920s when they were phased out and replaced by "flimsy" paper tickets. The item has been punched many times. Printed for the Tramway Board (1916 to 1919). Has space for 44 journeys. On one side, has space for the name Line, Date, Badge, car, time of starting, and signature, if a student conductor. Printed for use in the down direction. Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D382. A heavy nickel plated steel ticket or fare strip cancelling / registering mechanism used on Melbourne cable trams. When a fare was sold, the bell would ring advising the passenger that their fare have registered. "An ingenious device resembling in principle the ticket punch of a railway porter. It is carried by the conductor who wears pinned to his coat a 'trip-slip'. He punches this once for every fare received; the action is simultaneously registered on a dial inside the punch and bell rings to appraise the passenger of the fact. The punch is provided with a patent lock, the secret of which is known only at headquarters and effective system of check is thus secured." (" A story of the Melbourne Cable Tramway System" - page 54). Used by the MT&O and MMTB until 1922/23 when replaced by the check ticket system. Manufactured by the Railway Register Manufacturing Company. Lock code IDMA. Advises of concession fares for the East Brighton - City via William St via either Glenhuntly Road and Nepean Highway. Question - was this poster depot specific, given the advice of the concession fares. .2 - similar document issues for 29/8/1071, but that Scholar's Concession tickets will apply form the 1st term 1972. .3 - similar document, but printed in red ink titled "Scholars' Concession Tickets", notes fare increase of August 1971 and gives prices. Ticket - light brown paper, "Combined Fare Ticket" - MMTB, over printed with a red 5d, and Ticket Number A B 425191. with conditions of travel on the front. On the rear is printed in red ink is an advert for B. Matthews Pty Ltd, with head office at 102-110 Toorak Road, South Yarra, advertising a Motor Funeral Service. Dean Filgate advised 24-12-2020: Unfortunately an un-used example, from the same block that most collectors obtained one for their collection ! There are genuine used examples of similar 6d (purple overprint) tickets, however I cannot find my "files" about these: there were at least two places this type of ticket was used in the early to mid-1930s. One was a "Combined Fare Ticket to and from the City via The Coburg Electric and Brunswick Cable Cars", the other was used on the Glen Huntly lines to enable passengers to pay only once for their journey to the City, as until 1934 trams from Glen Huntly Depot did not run direct to the City - you had to transfer trams at Elsternwick or Ripponlea.trams, tramways, melbourne, tickets, mmtb, advertisements

Black plastic covered folder with yellow and green lines, with The Met logo and title "Met Fares and Ticketing Manual", four ring binder containing updates dating from June 1996 to May 1998 and details of the Met Ticketing system. Has content tabs for General Information, Met Fares, Authorised Concessions, Accompanied and Miscellaneous items tickets, concession cards, free travel passes and the conditions for the carriage of passengers. Main manual is 117 pages with maps and contacts with the various bus lines. Has approx. 90 pages of updates in the front of the main manual. The folder has the card for Ian Yarde, Manager Metropolitan Train Service Development on the front of the folder and the updates have been address to him as well. There is an index just before Tab 1. Only one of the tickets appear to have been used. .1 - Metcard for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival - March 30 to April 23 2000, with a MetCard machine looking at a passenger.
