Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. Butter Pats, Unknown, Pair of butter pats, 1920-1930
These wooden butter pats were used to shape butter into bricks; making butter ready for sale and use. The excess moisture would be squeezed out of the butter; which was then transferred to a wooden board. The butter maker would hold one of these pats in each hand and work the butter into shape. These wooden pats are thin; light and easy to hold. The inside face is serrated to grip the butter and squeeze out any further water. It was also used to make patterns on the finished butter. Orbost & District Historical Society
black and white photograph, VR Printing Works, 1975
Pat Donchi's grandfather came to Orbost to cut sleepers in the 1890s. Pat and his sons have carried on since then. This photograph, one of six, was taken for the Victorian railways Magazine in 1975, a pamphlet produced for Victorian Railways. It contains photographs and an article about Orbost as "Timber Country" and a detailed article titled, " Cutting Sleepers is a Family Business" which tells about the Donchi familyThis item is associated with the timber and sleeper-cutting industry in the Orbost Region. Timber sleepers were superceded by concrete sleepers in c. 1970s. Orbost has historically been based on the timber industry, but that industry has declined considerably over the last 20 years. The number of locals involved in the timber industry has declined and many of the mills have closed. This item reflects a time when that industry was a significant contributor to the economy of the district.A black / white photograph of Pat Donchi, a local sleeper cutter, falling a tree with a chainsaw.on back - Pr 8708timber-industry-orbost donchi-orbost sleeper-cutting-orbost -

Containers, tin 'Dr Pat' pipe tobacco, 20thC
Dr.Pat, a brand of both cigarette and pipe tobacco, are produced and sold by Imperial Tobacco Australia. It is an aromatic blend of Irish and other fine cut tobaccos. Dr.Pat is sold only in New Zealand and Australia. Imperial Tobacco Australia Limited is the smallest and most recently formed of the tobacco companies operating within Australia. Imperial Tobacco Australia was established to coincide with the merger of WD & HO Wills Holdings Limited and Rothmans Holdings Limited as British American Tobacco Australia. At the time of the proposed merger, concerns were raised about the likelihood for reduction in competition in the Australian marketplace, thereby potentially causing a breach of Section 50 of the Trade Practices Act 1974. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission agreed to permit the merger to proceed, on condition that another tobacco company enter the Australian market. The UK-based Imperial Tobacco Group was invited to enter the Australian market and in September 1999, Imperial Tobacco Australia commenced operations.26, 27 As part of the agreement allowing the formation of British American Tobacco Australia, Imperial Tobacco Australia was sold a portfolio of cigarette, roll-your-own tobacco and cigarette paper trademarks previously owned by Rothmans or WD & HO Wills for the sum of $325 million. The purchase gave Imperial Tobacco Australia an opening market share of 17.1%.27 Imperial Tobacco Australia ranked third in cigarettes sales in 2009, with a volume share of 16.2%. Domestic object - Butter Pat, Unknown
Butter pats were common from about 1850 - 1920. These wooden pats were used to shape the butter on a butter board into pieces, instead of by hand as the butter was soft. The freshly churned butter was pressed to remove the watery buttermilk and to distribute added salt though the butter. They were also sometimes called Scotch Hands.A vintage long pale wooden rectangular butter pat, with a shaped handle.
