Jean Stirling , born 1901 in Orbost, married Charles Frances Reginald Joyes on 15th July 1922 in Orbost. Jean's father was John Stirling, son of James Stirling and Ann Gray. Her mother was Robina Harvey McNair, Aged 19 James Stirling arrived in Melbourne on January 26, 1842 with his family - parents, three sisters and two brothers. James Stirling moved around a lot to Whittlesea, Ballarat goldfields, Cunninghame, (now Lakes Entrance), then to the Old Station about 36 miles to the east along the coast near the mouth of the Snowy River and for a time settled there with his wife also from Wigton, Scotland, and their family four sons two daughters (James, John, William, George, Margaret and Polly). The first settler to occupy the Marlo township area was James Stirling around the year 1875. He built a bark hut on the bluff that had two rooms, bark walls, earthen floors and a shingle roof. By 1884, this structure had expanded to a 9 roomed accommodation house and in 1886 became the Marlo Hotel when a liquor license was granted. The better roads were closer to the towns, and the further away from the town, the worse the conditions of the roads. Bullock teams drew heavily laden carts full of provisions, equipment and people from town to town and into the countryside to isolated homes. This item is associated with that era. The City of Ballarat unanimously resolved to erect a Civic Hall in Mair Street in 1951. The architects, Gordon Murphy, of Melbourne, and H.L. and L.J. Coburn, of Ballarat, were commissioned in 1952. The Council constructed the foundations and footings for the building under the supervision of the former City engineer, Mr L.H. Finch, in 1953. These footings are of massed concrete. The design for the building took advantage of the cross fall of the land, providing for the Small Hall to be entered from the Doveton Street frontage through a foyer under the Main Stage, the structure is steel with brick panels, with accommodation for 1,592 persons in the Main Hall and 440 persons in the Lower Hall. The front facade faces Mair Street, set back from the building line to provide for the entrance drive-ways and kerbed gardens. Tenders were invited on a firm price basis. A young Ballarat master Builter, Walter Benbow Trahar was the successful tenderer, the contract price being 139,841 pounds. the work was commenced in 1953 and has proceeded in spite of material and labour difficulties until its completion. The following statistics are of interest:- * The foundations contained 200 cubic yards of concrete. * The constructional steel work weighs approximately 270 tons. * The reinforcing steel 47 tons. * Reinforced concrete in the structure, 1,100 cubic yards. * The approximate number of bricks in the building, 580,000. * The flooring is of selected kiln-dried hard wood and totals 40,000 lineal feet. * The dimensions of the Main Auditorium, 100ft by 86 ft, including the side promenades each 82ft by 13ft. *The Main stage, of reinforced concret with parquette finish measures 62 ft by 40ft. *The floor area of the Lower Hall is 74 ft by 38 ft, and has a stage dimensions of 40ft by 20 ft. * Each hall has independent heating and ventillating systems. Where possible the material in the building was furnished from local business houses. The public address installation, which provided for additional microphones, is on the main Stage. There is inter-communication throughout the building connecting the front office, with the bioscope box, the stages in both the large and lower halls, and the Hallkeeper's residence. Local craftsmen have completed the painting, plaster work, and the electrical installation; local produced materials being used in the construction of the buildings with the exception of the timber for the Main Floor, the roofing and the structural steel. The Council heard from nearly 50 members of the public during a marathon six-hour meeting. Councilors John Birt, Des Hudson, Amy Johnson, Josh Morris, Peter Innes, John Philips supported the motion to demolish Civic Hall. The RAAF retained the Ballarat airfield as its Radio School until 1961. The then-Shire of Ballarat negotiated with the Department of Interior to become the civil operator of the airfield and sought the maintenance on site of the hangars and other structures, however a majority of the P Huts were sold by the Commonwealth. The Poultry Cross is a market cross in Salisbury, Wiltshire, marking the site of former markets. It was built in the 14th century and modified in the 18th century. It stands at the junction of Silver Street and Minster Street. The Poultry Cross is the only one remaining of four market crosses that once existed in Salisbury. The presence of a market cross on the Poultry Cross site dates to 1307 and the name to about a century later. The present stone structure was built in the late 15th century. The Ballarat School of Mines was the first of its type in Australia. The Albert Street frontage was the 'working end' of the campus with the mining laboratory, gauge tower and caretakers cottage. All the structures in the foreground have been demolished to make way for the Flecknoe Building and the M.B. John Building. Harry Brew, the well known Ballarat School of Mines caretaker, lived in the small weatherboard building to the right of the photograph. Much of the structure was re-constructed in Victorian times. The church with large windows in Perpendicular style. Buttresses were required with this type of building as the large window area reduced the strength of the walls. The church boasts boasts some of the best examples of fifteenth century stained glass left in Britain. There are eighteen panels illustrating the life of St. Helena. The church tower is 145 feet high and has a peel of thirteen bells. William Lawrence Bragg was born in Adelaide in 1890. Lawrence was only fifteen years old when he started study at the University of Adelaide. In 1908 he graduated with a first-class honours degree in mathematics. He worked as a professor of physics at the University of Manchester in 1919-1938 and at Cambridge in 1938-54. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1915 with his father, Sir William Henry Bragg at the age of twenty-five "for their services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays". He died in Waldringfield, England, 1 July 1971. Red hardcovered book with black and white illustrations. Organised sport and clubs began in 1919 with the formation of the Junior Technical School Students' Association. Clubs included the Rifle Club, Wireless Club, Senior Cadet team, Photography Club and Bugle Band. Sport was the Associations main concern. The House system was developed and boys competed within this structure. In 1926 the North Central Junior Technical School Sports Association was formed. Students from the district competed against each other in football, cricket and tennis. The number of schools increased and more sports were introduced. Ballarat Junior Technical School was a strong competitor. Many ex-students made a mark in sport out of the Ballarat area. The photograph shows Ray Bilney - second from the left. Born 2 November 1945, Ray began cycling aged 10. In 1963 he was Australian Junior Road Champion. From 1964 to 1966 he was Australian Senior Road Champion. He was in the Australian team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and came 4th in the race, aged 18 years. In 1966 he went to the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica and won a Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970. Ray was Ballarat Sportsman's Club Sportsman-of-the-Year 1965/66 and inducted into their Hall of Fame. In 1965 Ray was Cyclist-of-the-Year and won the coveted Sir Hubert Opperman Trophy. In May 2013, Ray was inducted into the Victorian Cycling Hall-of-Fame. During his time at the Junior Technical School, he sporting abilities were evident and in 1961 he was Top Sportsman of the school. The same year he was one of eight boys chosen to be Prefects of the school. He is an Alumni of Federation University. The Ballarat Gaol operated between 1862 and 1965. The complex was based on a central hall from which radiated wings of cells. This meant one guard could stand in the centre of the hall and see all the cells. Most of the gaol was demolished to allow the School of MInes Ballarat to expand. The remaining structures at the site include the main gate, the Warden's Residence, shown in the photo, and the Governor's Residence. These buildings are now used by Federation University.
