The Beechworth Burke Museum
Audio - Oral History, Jennifer Williams, Mrs Beth Miller, 8 June 2000
Mrs Beth Miller was born in February, 1924 in Latvia. Her family left for Germany after Russian occupation was implemented in Latvia, and eventually sailed for Australia from Naples, Italy in 1949. A working contract and position at the Mayday Hills Mental Hospital brought her to Beechworth, where she settled with her husband and parents. Mrs Miller recounts the daily work in the Mental Hospital during the 1950s, life in Black Spring and the isolation of the immigrant experience. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Mrs Beth Millers account of her life in Beechworth and the local area during the 20th century is historically and socially significant to the cultural heritage of the region. She gives important insights into the life of post-war European immigrants in the area. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved. This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. It holds up 40 minutes of recordings on each side.Mrs Beth Miller /beechworth, beth miller, miller, listen to what they say, jennifer williams, oral history, latvia, bonegilla, immigration, mayday, mayday hills, mental hospital, asylum, black spring, bakery, lutheran, immigrant -

Letter book, 1933
This letter book contains letters that date from 1933 to 1936. It came originally from the office of John William Crawley Junior, an engineer, architect and surveyor in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were all engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary, for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. The letter book was also used by John Crawley’s son, Rolf who took over the job of engineer at the Shire of Warrnambool in 1935 and held the position until 1968. The book then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying practice of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the letter book, along with several other Crawley ledgers, from the Michael Hand Estate. This letter book is of considerable importance as it contains letters written by John Crawley Junior and Rolf Crawley, both engineers for the Shire of Warrnambool over the years covered by the letter book. It will be very useful to researchers. This is a hard cover book of 1000 pages. Only half of the pages have been used and there are some loose sheets. The book is bound on the cover corners and on the spine with buff-coloured leather. The pages contain an alphabetical index and handwritten letters. Some pages are water-stained. ‘Letter Book 1933 Shire’john william crawley, warrnambool, rolf crawley, warrnambool, shire of warrnambool -

Photograph, Steam locomotive K-158 at the coal hopper, Echuca Railway Station, November 1963, 1963
THE ECHUCA COALING STAGE. Locomotives would stop alongside to receive coal dropped into their tenders from small overhead rail mounted tipping trays. Water could be obtained from either the elevated tank at one end or the connected standpipe at the opposite end. Locomotive firebox contents could be dumped into pits between the rails from locomotives once they were carefully positioned above them. Such locomotives then could move onto the Engine Shed area for overnight parking. Firebox fires would be re-lit when the locomotive was next needed in a day or so. Photograph, Grace Mitchell, A young Jenni Mitchell with flowers and teddy bear on Main Road Bridge, Eltham, 1958c
Grace Mitchell was probably best known for her Eltham shop at the corner of Mt Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace's memories covered many local identities who were patrons of her shop between 1954 and 1971. From the elevated position of her shop and home Grace was able to view a varied passing parade of Eltham events from ERSILAC, Easter and Eltham Festival parades passing on their way to Eltham Lower Park, circuses in Wingrove Park (then Bremner’s Reserve), roadworks and other happenings. Bremner's Reserve was renamed Wingrove Park c.1970 This photo of her daughter Jenni was from a series of images presented by Grace Mitchell at a Society talk 10 March 1993 on the theme of “My Eltham”. Jenni Mitchell was born 1955 according to Australian Art Sales Digest and grew up to become a noted local Eltham artist and one time Councillor.Black and white print 17 x 25.4 cmjenni mitchell, main road bridge, eltham -

Leisure object - Baulk circle templates, Alcocks & Co, 1860-1960
These items are known as baulk circle templates. The larger one stamped Alcock & Co would have been made before 1888 (this is clear from the address). The middle one is more likely to have been made during the late 19th or early 20 century. The smaller on made of ply would have been made much later in the 20th century. The person maintaining the Billiard Table uses one of these templates to mark out a semi-circle on the table cloth in a particular position determined by the rules of the games of billiard and snooker. The semi-circle is known as the Baulk Circle. Together with a line across the table at the diameter of the semi-circle , known as the baulk line, the baulk circle plays a crucial part in these games. For example, the opening shot of each game is played from the baulk circle; in the game of billiard, if an opponent's ball crosses the baulk line, it may lead to his ball being “protected “during the next shot.A billiard room was a feature of all the Missions over the world.Set of 3 large semi circular wooden tools.pool, snooker, billiard, games, mission to seamen, mission to seafarers, alcocks, baulk line, baulk circle -

Photograph (black & White), Field Artillery - South Africa
The Second Boer War saw attempted application of bombardment as an alternative to the use of ground forces. In most battles fought during the conflict this was proved not to be possible. There was competition from the other side's ability to take evasive measures. The opponent was able to use cover to protect himself and hide his position. This was the tactic used against the British at the Battle of Magersfontein and the Battle of Colenso. The British had success when they ceased using artillery by itself and used it in conjunction with infantry. British General Buller linked the use of artillery and the movement of infantry in continuous interlocking assaults upon each hill south of Ladysmith. As soon as shelling had finished in a location the infantry moved. The front collapsed on the 27 February 1900 when use was made of a creeping curtain of shell fire sent over the heads of advancing infantry destroying everything 100 yards ahead of them. It was this tactic of the creeping barrage that has been described as "revolutionary'. Photograph, Mrs. McGlone
Eliza McGlone was the wife of John McGlone and they were early settlers in Mitcham. They ran one of the earliest hotels in Mitcham: 'The Harvest Home' from 1873. The hotel was conducted in the front room of their house in Whitehorse Road, Mitcham, on the corner of what is now McGlone Street. The hotel closed in 1889. John McGlone died on 3 September 1892 aged 65. Eliza McGlone continued to live in Mitcham until her death on 2 January 1921, aged 85. She had been Mitcham's first official Postmistress and, following several others who had held that position, she returned to that role for a period up to 1914 when Bertha Markham was appointed. The McGlones owned substantial rental properties and had donated one acre in central Mitcham for the Catholic Church. The McGlone Estate was subdivided in 1924, but the name is perpetuated in McGlone Street, Mitcham, near the site of the old Harvest Home Hotel.Black and white photo (three copies of an original taken circa 1890) of Mrs. Eliza McGlone. mcglone, eliza, harvest home hotel, whitehorse road, mitcham, mcglone street -

Painting - oil on canvas, Charles E. Gordon Frazer, Sir Thomas Bent, 1892
When Thomas Bent, politician and land speculator, was appointed Speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1892, a number of local Brighton constituents and supporters raised money to present him with an oil portrait. Bent had been a member for Brighton for 21 years, and the painting was seen as a way of showing their appreciation of his services to the Brighton constituency, as well as congratulating him to his new position as Speaker. In June 1892, British/Australian landscape and portrait artist Charles E. Gordon-Frazer was given the commission to paint the portrait. Thomas Bent is depicted as standing in his Speaker's robe on the dais beneath the canopy in the Legislative Assembly Chamber in the act of addressing the House. He wears the traditional Speaker’s dress of a black silk and gold laced robe over a three-piece black suit, lace jabot and cuffs, buckled shoes and a ceremonial long wig. The top of the gold parliamentary mace sits on the right of the work near the frame's edge.sir thomas bent, thomas bent, speaker, mayor, premier, brighton, moorabbin, land speculator, local government, councillor, official, member of lower house, portrait, parliament, ceremonial robes, legislative assembly, jabot, wig, mace -

The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966. A large part of this collection of civic ephemera was assembled by W. D. Birrell. This is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. Items in the collection illuminate the political, social and cultural history of the district. As a continuous record, ranging across most decades of the Twentieth Century, they reveal changing tastes in design, values and relationships in the history of local government in Victoria.ephemera, civic ephemera, civic invitations, cr w j hambly, recreation hall -- kew (vic.) -

Machine - Object, Quantum Technology, Jot a Dot Brailler, 2005
The Jot a Dot Pocket Brailler is a portable, manual Braille writer designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This small, lightweight brailler has six keys for Braille entry. The keys have high contrast colors for identification by users with low vision. Braille is written from the left hand side of the page to the right, with 20 cells of braille per line. The user can read Braille as it is written by turning the unit over. A built-in reading stand keeps the unit stable when resting on hard surfaces. Tactile line and cell indicators show the current location on the page. The line indicator shows which line is being Brailled, and the cell indicator shows the position of the embossing head on the line. By turning the device over, the user can read the Braille as they write it. This Brailler uses standard photocopy paper in A5 and A6 paper sizes. The unit is constructed in one piece, so there are no parts that can be lost. 1 rectangular blue Braille unit with 6 bright green keys Yellow sticker LN017a on front. Text, The Black and White Ball, 1981-2014
The Black and White committee started in 1936 to raise funds for the children supported by the Sydney Industrial Blind Institute (later Royal Blind Society of NSW) through a variety of events. One such major fundraiser was a Ball, initially began as the White Ball then changed to Black and White Ball in 1948. Ball programs were created to provide opportunity for sponsors to advertise their involvement with this prestigious event, as well include information on the time progression of the night, a menu, a list of the current committee (Patron, President, various positions and members) and the Black and White Derby race sheet. First run in 1956, the Derby gave individuals or businesses the opportunity to sponsor a 'horse' in the race, which was ridden by a 'jockey' who rolled up a line to reach the finish post. Later programs included auction items, information on performers at the Ball and photographs from other events organised by the Black and White Committee (Casino Cruise, Women of Achievement lunch, previous year's Ball, etc.)Booklets with black and white covers with illustrationsCover on title changes: The Black and White Ball (1981-3) The Black and White programme (1985-1988) The Black and White Ball ((1992, 2003, 2005)black and white committee, royal blind society of nsw -

Photograph - High Street, Wodonga Level Crossing, 1954
This image is representative of many photographs illustrating the level crossing in the centre of Wodonga. Since its opening in 1873 the railway line had crossed High Street, originally called Sydney Road. It bisected the city with level crossing gates frequently stopping the flow of traffic and pedestrians as trains passed through. Signal Box B stood on the eastern side of the High Street level crossing and a big wheel closed and opened the gates. On 17th September, 1961, it was replaced by boom gates and flashing lights. The railway crossing was removed from High Street as part of the Wodonga Rail Bypass project. This involved a 5.5 kilometres bypass, the elimination of 11 level crossings and the relocation of the Wodonga station. It was moved from its original central location to a position on a new line on the northern edge of the town. The old station closed on 8 November 2008 and the new station opened on 25 June 2011.This image has local and statewide significance as it captures the former crossing in a major railway system. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.A black and white photo of the railway level crossing in High Street, Wodonga with gates closed. The Melbourne to Sydney railway line went through the centre of Wodonga and trains frequently held up internal vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the main street. railways wodonga, wodonga railway relocation, high st wodonga rail crossing -
Melbourne Legacy
Programme, Sir John Monash Commemoration Service
The State Electricity Commission Sub-Branch of the RSL convened a commemoration service for Sir John Monash on Sunday 16 April 1972, which took place at the equestrian statue of Monash at the Shrine. The MC was Legatee D.J. Simonson (President 1970 and great nephew of Sir John), who also laid a wreath on behalf of Melbourne Legacy, and the address was given by Dr. J.A.L. Matheson, Vice Chancellor of Monash University. Matheson spoke of the establishment of the University in 1958 and how appropriate it had been to name it after Monash, comparing the struggle to create a world class university with Monash's struggles on the Western Front. Appropriately Monash had been chairman of the constructing body of the Shrine. In 1923 he was approached to become the first President of Legacy, a position which he declined as he was heavily involved as the Chairman of the State Electricity Commission. However, he pressed Colonel Harold Cohen, to take his place and Cohen became Legacy's first President.Legacy still takes part in RSL commemorations, and the links with Monash and the Shrine make this ceremony all the more noteworthy.01299 Seven sheets of black typing on white paper 01299.1 Folded card and paper insert, black print on white 01299.2 Outside of folded card, pale greyjohn monash, wreath laying ceremony
