The Ballarat Junior Technical School was established in 1913, and was a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. According to 'The Australasian' of 31 July 1915 sixty students of the Ballarat Junior Technical School made all the items depicted in the photograph.Black and white photograph mounted onto a brown card showing the interior of the Ballarat School of Mines Carpentry Building. It shows the war efforts of Sloyd students at the Ballarat Junior Technical School. Numerous foot stools, foot warmers, tables and seats were made by student to send to the front during World War One. Teacher Albert Steane stands on the left (2nd to the left of the Red Cross sign). From the second timber support beam V. Maddison stands 4th to the right and F.N. The Diploma Subjects Building was designed to be erected on the M.B. John Factory site (Lydiard Street towards Armstrong St), to provide facilities for the tertiary sector of the Ballarat School of Mines. This proposal was aborted when the Mount Helen Campus site was acquired and a new campus started there in 1967. Many of the laboratories shown in these plans were incorporated, in modified form, in single-storey buildings on Mt Helen campus.Plans for proposed building for Diploma students at the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1906 Andrew Anderson was President of the Ballarat School of Mines. Part of his report states: 'The Annual Reunion of the students was held in December last, and was largely attended by students and Members of the Council. Advantage was taken of this opportunity by the students to present Professor A. Mica Smith, who has completed twenty-five years service with the School, with a valuable silver coffee and dinner service and Miss J. Knox Smith with a large portrait of the Professor'. This book was authored by Rev William Henderson, founder of Ballarat College. It was donated to the College by Keith Hofmaier (PY1944) who had received it from Rev Sid A Goddard, former Ballarat College and Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College council member and chair. The book affirms the strong theological convictions, training and qualifications of the school's founder. The book is accompanied by two letters. The first from Sid Goddard on the occasion of his presentation of the book to St Andrews Kirk. The second from Keith Hofmaier advising the inclusion of the book among the 'meagre collection of Henderson relics at the college'. Book has social significance for the college community because of its association with both William Henderson and Sid Goddard. This cottage was completed in 1956. One of the first objectives of the Association was "to provide the shelter of a hose for those Pioneers of the Goldfields whom the reverses of fortune have deprived of the means of procuring the comforts of life in their declining years." The first home at Charles Anderson Grove was built in 1925. Before that time the Association provided relief for needy pioneers. relief included monthly monetary payments, loads of firewood, medical assistance and distribution of Christmas bosed of groceries to deserving pensioners, and in some cases payment of burial costs. ::a) The dominant purpose of the Association is to give public benevolent relief as a charity, but providing independent living accommodation in our Retirement Village for person in need who are over 65. ::b) To raise funds by membership subscription, commercial and residential rents, donations, gifts and voluntary work, for the purpose of providing direct relief of poverty, distress, misfortune or helplessness. ::c) To maintain the important heritage and ongoing viability of the Old Colonists' Association. ... Corner Sturt and Camp Streets, Ballarat, Victoria ...First known development on this site was the establishment of the Government Camp from the early 1850s. It was established to accommodate officials, troopers and police who were needed to administer the goldfields. Some permanent buildings were constructed. Lack of materials and bad weather prolonged the building of more permanent buildings and most men were still living in tents. Area was known as Camp Reserve. In 1864 a subdivision map shows the reserve be used for Public Buildings. Library applied for land on corner of Sturt and Camp Streets in 1878. 1880s plans show section of the reserve be used for a Free Library and Reading Room. Lease was granted and the old mining boardroom was initially used. Land for additional building to house a Museum and Art Gallery sought and agreement reached in 1882-3. Compensation paid to owners and library granted the land. Plans for a new library building with tower and lantern roof abandoned due to lack of funds. It wasn't until 1895 that a solution to funding was found and the library was able to begin constructing the complex of buildings on the Free Library Reserve. A number of changes have occurred since 1910s - the Classical Revival facade replaced with an angled facade in a stripped Classical style with Art Deco features and high parapet. Wendouree Parade and Carlton Street, Ballarat, Victoria ...The Trustees of the Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial have defined a Prisoner of War to be a person who was captured by a common enemy and/or interned in a neutral or non-combatant country. To be defined an Australian Prisoner of War, the person needs to be either an Australian Born person serving in the Uniform of an Australian Service; or in the Uniform of a friendly country, or Born Elsewhere and serving in the Uniform of an Australian Service. A Prisoner is a person who has lost personal privileges, suffers deprivation of liberty or is unable to return home or dies in captivity.Colour photograph of a War Memorial designed by Peter Blizzard. The granite wall of the Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial features a listing the names of Australian Prisoners and was opened on the 6th February 2004 by General Peter Cosgrove AM MC to recognise and remember over 36,000 Australians who became Prisoners of War during the Wars of the 20th Century. In 2008 the Memorial became the First Military Memorial of National Significance outside Canberra. The Memorial which was designed by Peter Blizzard OAM, symbolises that all Australian prisoners embarked on a journey to serve away from their homeland and acknowledges the hardship, deprivation, brutality, starvation and disease endured by Prisoners of War during their capture and the scars that many continued to endure upon their repatriation to Australia. Heritage Victoria describes the memorial in the following way" "A JOURNEY OF HONOUR, REMEMBRANCE AND HEALING - The Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial is a dramatic and highly symbolic tribute to the sacrifice made by more than 35,000 young Australian service men and women in four theatres of war. At the heart of the monument is a stark, 130 metre long, highly polished black granite wall, engraved with the names of all Australian prisoners of war. The names on this 'honour roll' are listed in historical order from the Boer War in 1899, through to the Korean War in 1953. It is a testament to the contribution made by so many. Standing sentinel at the centre of the Memorial are six huge basalt obelisks, etched with the names of all the countries where Australians were held prisoner of war. The obelisks stand in a large reflective pool, set back from the central pathway, symbolising the distance that separated Australia's prisoners of war from their homes and their loved ones. Opposite the pool is a larger obelisk flanked by flagpoles and a ceremonial stone on which to lay wreaths. The central pathway is itself symbolic, with each of the paving stones cut in the shape of a railway sleeper. The pathway defines 'the journey' taken by the prisoners of war and the journey visitors take around the monument. At the end of the granite wall where the pathway ends, visitors face a large stone engraved simply 'Lest We Forget'. Water flows from beneath the stone, along the base of the granite wall and into the reflection pool in which the obelisks stand. On 7 March 1964 the Former Ballarat Gaol was opened to the public resulting in a large turnout. The Ballarat School of Mines Botanical Gardens were established in 1879, and are situated at the rear of the current administration building. The gardens enabled the students to sit for examinations for registration by the Pharmacy Board of Victoria.
