Photograph - Mrs Ethel Cerini in costume for 'The Quaker Girl'
Mrs Constance Clucas, a talented musician in the Holy Trinity choir, started 'The Surrey Hills Operatic Society' in 1931. She trained members of the Society to concert standard. Mrs Clucas produced operettas for some ten years. Titles included 'The Arcadian', 'Princess Ju Ju', 'The Quaker Girl', and 'Miss Hook of Holland'. Local musicians formed the orchestra which was extended for the concert presentation by a few guest artists among whom were locals Marion de Saxe, a flautist, and Fred McBeath. Rehearsals were held in the Surrey Hall and a small Canterbury Road Lodge Hall with final staging in the Surrey Hall and Camberwell Town Hall. Scores and costumes were hired from J. C. A menu card from a dinner dance held in 1962. Charity balls were held with the proceeds from the evening going to aid Melbourne Legacy. The ball was held under the patronage of 'His Excellency the Administrator of the Commonwealth of Australia, General Sir Dallas Brooks.' From Wikpedia: "Brooks was appointed Governor of Victoria by Premier Thomas Hollway and served from 1949 to 1963. During his term as governor, he acted as Administrator of the Commonwealth three times. He served in this capacity for almost seven months after the governor-general, Viscount Dunrossil, suddenly died in office in 1961 after serving only one year. Sir Dallas was in effect Acting governor-general until the appointment of the Viscount De L'Isle.A record that Legacy used gala dinners and balls for fundraising events. Hugh Myddelton Lewis ('Myd') (1911-1995) wrote a brief account of his association with Melbourne Legacy which is more an explanation of the work of Legacy than a personal history and completely omits to mention that he was President in 1969 and held both an OBD and a Croix de Guerre and twice mentioned in Despatches. He served in the British Army Royal Artillery in the Western Desert from 1939-41 and in France and Germany from 1944-1946, leaving the army in 1955 with the rank of Colonel and moving to Melbourne in 1958. In civilian life he worked as the Manager of Public Affairs with C.R.A. until retiring in 1973. During this time he worked tirelessly for Legacy on many committees and was Chairman of the Co-ordinating Council from 1974-1976.Legacy is identified as 'one of the most important influences' for three decades of his life. In 1905, Mr. Frank Jarvis and Mr. Tommy Garner formed Conway Stewart & Co. Limited at 13 Paternoster Row EC1, next to St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Today, this area is known as Paternoster Square having been redeveloped after its complete destruction during the Blitz of World War II. Although there is much debate regarding the origins of the Company’s name, it is believed that the name “Conway Stewart” derives from a popular vaudeville act of the day. Conway and Stewart were supposedly a comedy double act who appeared at Collins Music Hall in Islington. The two entrepreneur took a great risk in leaving their secured jobs to start a new enterprise reselling fountain pens made by other manufacturers. They concentrated their energies and invested in importing pens from the United States. After an arduous month of persistent selling of their stock, they reaped the rewards of a rather healthy turnover of more than £13 and 9 shillings. This was a great accomplishment considering that the rent for their business premises was only five shillings a week. Even though this turnover would be pleasing to many new ventures, the strength of De La Rue in the fountain pen market made it impossible for the company to continue selling no-named fountain pens. In the same year, De La Rue reportedly invested £50,000 in a promotion campaign for their new launch, the Onoto. However, Garner and Jarvis soon recognized there was an audience desiring good, reliable writing instruments that were also affordable. This is when Conway Stewart began to capture a market amongst the English. Jarvis and Garner developed a single aim, to produce elegant and beautiful, yet functional writing instruments – a principle that Conway Stewart holds true to this day.Red "Conway Stewart Ink" bottle with black metal lid and red round label. Ladysmith is a city in the Uthukela District of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. In 1847 after buying the land from the Zulu King Mpande, a number of Boers settled in the area and called it the Republic of Klip River. The Republic was annexed by the British in the same year and on 20 June 1850 it was proclaimed a township called Windsor. In October 1850 the name changed to Ladysmith after Juana Maria de los Delores de Leon Smith, also known was "Lady Smith", the Spanish wife of Sir Harry Smith, the Governor of the Cape Colony. He was also High Commissioner in South Africa from 1847 to 1852. A for was built in 1860 to protect the villagers from the Zulu. During the Second Boer War British commander Lieutenant General Sir George White made Ladysmith his centre of operations for the protection of Natal against the Boer forces. A number of short lived battles were fought for the control of the town. After suffering many casualties the British retreated to Ladysmith. While the British regrouped in the town, Boer forces surrounded Ladysmith. The siege lasted 118 days during one of the most crucial stage of the war. Three attempts by General Sir Redvers Buller to break the siege resulted in defeat for the British forces at the Battles of Colenso, Spion Kop and Vaal Krantz. The Boer forces attempted to break the siege. This led to the Battle of Platrand, or Wagon Hill, south the town. Buller finally broke the siege in February 1900 after defeating the Boers. The original postcards in this series (2013.002 to 2013.018) were generously loaned to Williamstown Botanic Gardens by a private collector for copying. The postcards are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day. This postcard is evidence of the location of one of the cannons relocated from Fort Gellibrand in 1906. They were removed from the Gardens in the 1960s. These same cannons remain a feature on the Williamstown waterfront in 2013. A sepia postcard depicting a winding path lined with rocks. There is a cannon on the right hand side of the card beneath a spreading palm tree. There is a tall pine and a cypress tree in the background. This collection of 22 photos was most likely taken in 1984. Mr Gordon Scholes AO was the Minister for Defence in the Hawke Government from 1983 to 1984. It’s evident in these photos he was taken on a tour through the production areas. Mr John Brumby AO at this time was the Federal Member for Bendigo. He later moved on to Victorian state politics, serving as Treasurer from 2000 to 2007 and Premier from 2007 to 2010. Key Army Survey Regiment personnel identified include COL Alex Laing, the Director of Survey from 1983 to 1988 and CO LTCOL Jorge Gruszka who led the unit from 1982 to 1985. The rank of the senior officer is not known, however would have been a Major-General or above, due to the presence of the aide-de-camp (female captain). This is a set of 22 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo circa 1984, by Mr Gordon Scholes AO, who was the Minister for Defence. Slides, Box of Glass Slides Capital Theatre, 1940s
These glass slides were made to be used at interval time at the Capitol Theatre in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. The Capitol Theatre (originally the Warrnambool Theatre) was erected in 1930 on the site occupied by the Hotel Mansions which included a Palais de Danse and a Mansions Theatre. All were destroyed by fire in 1929. The Capitol Theatre was built in the Spanish Mission style and is one of the few surviving Spanish Mission style theatres in Victoria. However the interior was largely altered in 1994 when the Capitol was converted into a three-screen complex. But some decorative features of the old interior were kept and these included the original proscenium. Stan Stevens and his family were associated with the Capitol Theatre management for many years from 1972. The Capitol Theatre still operates today. These slides are of considerable importance as they are a wonderful example of picture theatre-going in the 1940s and 50s when slides were shown during the interval times and many of these were locally made. The reason for showing the words of songs is not known but it is presumed they had sing-a-longs during the intervals, possibly to boost morale during the days of World War Two. The advertising slides are of particular interest and feature such local businesses as the Woollen Mill, Sungold Dairies, E.A. Wright Motors and Alex Donaldson Timber and Hardware Supplies. These are small square glass slides (numbered1 to 92) which were shown in the 1940s at the Capitol Theatre in Warrnambool at interval time (advertisements, words of songs etc). Some of the slides have been professionally produced and some, especially the words of songs, have been hand-made and handwritten or typed. Some are in colour and some are blank. In others the contents have been obscured or obliterated. book, Beyond the garden wall: twenty-two gardeners and their gardens, 2008
This book was compiled by Sue Barnett at the request of the project participants from material gathered as part of the project "Beyond the Garden Wall". This project was devised and managed by a team at Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre Inc. with funding from the Victorian Department of Planning and Community Development (VDPCD) under the "Images of Age' grant 2007. It involved conducting oral histories, reflection on the part of the participants through visual diaries, photography and painting. A short video of some of the gardens was also commissioned. All the elements came together during Seniors Festival in an exhibition held at the Augustine Centre, and opened by Jane Edmanson. At the request of the VDPCD, a modified exhibition was held in 2008 at 'Australia on Collins' during the 2008 Seniors Festival. Sue Barnett and Jo Reitze (Mrs de Carteret) are Surrey Hills residents. This provides a snapshot of 20 gardens and the 22 passionate gardeners who created them. The prose provides a potted history of the gardeners and their philosophical approach, accompanied by portraits of them and cameo photos of their gardens, as well as a photo of the painting of the garden as seen by artist Jo Reitze. All the gardens were situated within the City of Boroondara and all the gardeners were over 60 years of age. Furniture - Cabinet, Mr Franz Streizel, Unknown
This cabinet is part of a special bequest to the Mont De Lancey Museum of hand carved furniture and items made by Mr Franz Striezel by his grandaughter Mrs Dorothy Hilda Adamson. Dorothy was a friend of Nella Lord (nee Sebire). Dorothy passed away in 2007. It was to be known as The Franz Striezel Collection. Franz Streizel came from Germany in 1886 and was one of the three recognised craftsmen (Art Carvers) in Australia who contributed to the wood carvings in public buildings and honour boards throughout Australia. The National Gallery at their request had two small panels and a tobacco jar (some of his work), donated by Mrs D Adamson. They considered these pieces highly valuable. it was a wedding gift to Mr Franz Streizel's daughter Frieda Streizel approximately 1910. A heavily inlaid veneer two door cabinet with carved Egyptian style heads in the middle of each door set in a triangular pattern. It has two ornately carved small shelves at the sides attached to the mirror, one small central drawer, shaped sides above the top of the lower dressing table top. Functional object - Earthenware Bottle - Clydeside Wine Cellar Rutherglen, c1970
Clydeside Cellar was established by David G. Hamilton, a Scotsman who migrated to the Rutherglen district in 1861. He established a large business including a general store and vineyards. The Hamilton Clydeside brick cellars were built beginning in 1886 and completed in 1892. In August 1914, Messrs B. Seppelt and Sons Ltd. purchased Clydeside Cellars from the Mr. Hamilton’s estate. Due to changing conditions the vineyards were sold in the 1980s and all stock taken back to their property at Seppeltsfield in South Australia. From 1984 until the present the former Clydeside Cellar had several operators including Jolimont Cellars (Doug Shears), Tony Lamb and the 2 different Asian owned conglomerates operating as Rutherglen Estates. In 2018 Rutherglen Estate was purchased by De Bortoli Family Winemakers of Griffiths, NSW.This jug is representative of an historic and Australian Winemaker located in Northeast Victoria.An earthenware wine jug produced the House of Seppelt Clydeside Cellar at Rutherglen, VIctoria. The jug has a tradition loop handle and cork stopper.The bottom half of the jug is a traditional beige colour with a blue section. There are images in black on both sides of the jug. Functional object - Gordon Family Orchard Bell
The Gordons were architects and were associated with many buildings still standing in Albury and Wodonga, St Patrick's Church and the de Kerilleau Homestead among them. They established Vermont Orchard on 74 acres to the south of the Wodonga settlement. Here they grew fruit and nuts for the domestic and export market. The enterprising family also set about transforming some of the land by clearing it, creating streets and making general improvements. It was the biggest subdivision in Wodonga at the time. The 234 allotments in the Wodonga Estate were put up for sale by auction in May 1890. A total of 200 people were said to have attended. Gordon, William, Charles and Vermont streets in Wodonga are named after the family. This bell was used at the Vermont orchard to signal the beginning and end of the working day, as well as lunch breaks.The Gordon Family orchard bell is made of cast iron. It includes the inscription "J. C. W../G./1858." This is thought to represent the initials of John Gordon and sons Walter Joseph and Charles Goodwin Sylvester Gordon. There is some conjecture about this due to the date "1858". John was born in London, England in 1823 and died in 1880. Walter is generally accepted to have been born in 1857 and died 1903. In one family tree Charles is recorded as being born on 28 January 1858 but his birth was registered in 1860. The mystery of the date is therefore not fully resolved.On one side of the bell "J. C. Kekewich commanded the 1st Battalion of the Royal Regiment (North Lancashire) in the Second Boer War. He commanded the garrison in Kimberley during the siege and successful defence of the town. At this time he came into conflict with Cecil Rhodes who persuaded John French, commanding the relief force, to replace Kekewich with another officer as commander of the garrison. Kekewich was promoted to colonel for his services. In 1901 he was wounded in an attack by General de la Rey near Moedwil but soon recuperated. Kekewich was in charge during the British victory at the Battle of Rooiwai, the last major battle during the war. He stayed in South Africa until peace had been signed and then returned to England. This medium-sized dessert spoon is from the wreck of the LOCH ARD, a Loch Line ship of 1,693 tons which sailed from Gravesend, London, on 2 March 1878 with 17 passengers and a crew of 36 under Captain George Gibbs. “The intention was to discharge cargo in Melbourne, before returning to London via the Horn with wool and wheat”. Instead, on 1 June 1878, after 90 days at sea, she struck the sandstone cliffs of Mutton Bird Island on the south west coast of Victoria, and sank with the loss of 52 lives and all her cargo. The manifest of the LOCH ARD listed an array of manufactured goods and bulk metals being exported to the Colony of Victoria, with a declared value of £53,700. (202 bills of lading show an actual invoice value of £68, 456, with insurance underwriting to £30,000 of all cargo). Included in the manifest is the item of “Tin hardware & cutlery £7,530”. This dessert spoon is one of 482 similar items of electro-plated cutlery from the LOCH ARD site, comprising spoons and forks of various sizes but all sharing the same general shape or design and metallic composition. 49 of these pieces display a legible makers’ mark — the initials “W” and “P” placed within a raised diamond outline, which is in turn contained within a sunken crown shape — identifying the manufacturer as William Page & Co of Birmingham. An electroplater’s makers’ marks, unlike sterling silver hallmarks, are not consistent identifiers of quality or date and place of manufacture. A similar line of five impressions was usually made to impress the consumer with an implication of industry standards, but what each one actually signified was not regulated and so they varied according to the whim of the individual foundry. In this case, the maker’s marks are often obscured by sedimentary accretion or removed by corrosion after a century of submersion in the ocean. However sufficient detail has survived to indicate that these samples of electro-plated cutlery probably originated from the same consignment in the LOCH ARD’s cargo. The generally common range of marks are drawn from 255 tea spoons, 125 dessert spoons, and 99 table forks. These marks are clearly visible in 66 instances, while the same sequence of general outlines, or depression shapes, is discernible in another 166 examples. Suggested trade names for William Page & Co’s particular blend of brass plating are ‘roman silver’ or ‘silverite’. This copper alloy polishes to a lustrous gold when new, discolouring to a murky grey with greenish hue when neglected. HISTORY OF THE LOCH ARD The LOCH ARD belonged to the famous Loch Line which sailed many ships from England to Australia. Built in Glasgow by Barclay, Curdle and Co. in 1873, the LOCH ARD was a three-masted square rigged iron sailing ship. The ship measured 262ft 7" (79.87m) in length, 38ft (11.58m) in width, 23ft (7m) in depth and had a gross tonnage of 1693 tons. The LOCH ARD's main mast measured a massive 150ft (45.7m) in height. LOCH ARD made three trips to Australia and one trip to Calcutta before its final voyage. LOCH ARD left England on March 2, 1878, under the command of Captain Gibbs, a newly married, 29 year old. She was bound for Melbourne with a crew of 37, plus 17 passengers and a load of cargo. The general cargo reflected the affluence of Melbourne at the time. On board were straw hats, umbrella, perfumes, clay pipes, pianos, clocks, confectionary, linen and candles, as well as a heavier load of railway irons, cement, lead and copper. There were items included that intended for display in the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. The voyage to Port Phillip was long but uneventful. At 3am on June 1, 1878, Captain Gibbs was expecting to see land and the passengers were becoming excited as they prepared to view their new homeland in the early morning. But LOCH ARD was running into a fog which greatly reduced visibility. Captain Gibbs was becoming anxious as there was no sign of land or the Cape Otway lighthouse. At 4am the fog lifted. A man aloft announced that he could see breakers. The sheer cliffs of Victoria's west coast came into view, and Captain Gibbs realised that the ship was much closer to them than expected. He ordered as much sail to be set as time would permit and then attempted to steer the vessel out to sea. On coming head on into the wind, the ship lost momentum, the sails fell limp and LOCH ARD's bow swung back. Gibbs then ordered the anchors to be released in an attempt to hold its position. The anchors sank some 50 fathoms - but did not hold. By this time LOCH ARD was among the breakers and the tall cliffs of Mutton Bird Island rose behind the ship. Just half a mile from the coast, the ship's bow was suddenly pulled around by the anchor. The captain tried to tack out to sea, but the ship struck a reef at the base of Mutton Bird Island, near Port Campbell. Waves broke over the ship and the top deck was loosened from the hull. The masts and rigging came crashing down knocking passengers and crew overboard. When a lifeboat was finally launched, it crashed into the side of LOCH ARD and capsized. Tom Pearce, who had launched the boat, managed to cling to its overturned hull and shelter beneath it. He drifted out to sea and then on the flood tide came into what is now known as LOCH ARD Gorge. He swam to shore, bruised and dazed, and found a cave in which to shelter. Some of the crew stayed below deck to shelter from the falling rigging but drowned when the ship slipped off the reef into deeper water. Eva Carmichael had raced onto deck to find out what was happening only to be confronted by towering cliffs looming above the stricken ship. In all the chaos, Captain Gibbs grabbed Eva and said, "If you are saved Eva, let my dear wife know that I died like a sailor". That was the last Eva Carmichael saw of the captain. She was swept off the ship by a huge wave. Eva saw Tom Pearce on a small rocky beach and yelled to attract his attention. He dived in and swam to the exhausted woman and dragged her to shore. He took her to the cave and broke open case of brandy which had washed up on the beach. He opened a bottle to revive the unconscious woman. A few hours later Tom scaled a cliff in search of help. He followed hoof prints and came by chance upon two men from nearby Glenample Station three and a half miles away. In a state of exhaustion, he told the men of the tragedy. Tom returned to the gorge while the two men rode back to the station to get help. By the time they reached LOCH ARD Gorge, it was cold and dark. The two shipwreck survivors were taken to Glenample Station to recover. Eva stayed at the station for six weeks before returning to Ireland, this time by steamship. In Melbourne, Tom Pearce received a hero's welcome. He was presented with the first gold medal of the Royal Humane Society of Victoria and a £1000 cheque from the Victorian Government. Concerts were performed to honour the young man's bravery and to raise money for those who lost family in the LOCH ARD disaster. Of the 54 crew members and passengers on board, only two survived: the apprentice, Tom Pearce and the young woman passenger, Eva Carmichael, who lost all of her family in the tragedy. Ten days after the LOCH ARD tragedy, salvage rights to the wreck were sold at auction for £2,120. Cargo valued at £3,000 was salvaged and placed on the beach, but most washed back into the sea when another storm developed. The wreck of LOCH ARD still lies at the base of Mutton Bird Island. Much of the cargo has now been salvaged and some was washed up into what is now known as LOCH ARD Gorge. Cargo and artefacts have also been illegally salvaged over many years before protective legislation was introduced. One of the most unlikely pieces of cargo to have survived the shipwreck was a Minton porcelain peacock - one of only seven in the world. The peacock was destined for the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. It had been well packed, which gave it adequate protection during the violent storm. Today, the Minton peacock can be seen at the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum in Warrnambool. From Australia's most dramatic shipwreck it has now become Australia's shipwreck artefact and is one of very few 'objects' on the Victorian State Heritage Register most valuable. The LOCH ARD shipwreck is of State significance – Victorian Heritage Register S 417. Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from LOCH ARD is significant for being one of the largest collections of artefacts from this shipwreck in Victoria. It is significant for its association with the shipwreck, which is on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR S417). The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the LOCH ARD. The LOCH ARD collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of a large international passenger and cargo ship. The LOCH ARD collection is historically significant for representing aspects of Victoria’s shipping history and its potential to interpret sub-theme 1.5 of Victoria’s Framework of Historical Themes (living with natural processes). The collection is also historically significant for its association with the LOCH ARD, which was one of the worst and best known shipwrecks in Victoria’s history. Unrestored dessert spoon from the wreck of the LOCH ARD. The spoon design has a flattened fiddle-back handle, with a thin stem or shank, flared collar, and a shallow rounded bowl. The spoons metallic composition is a thin layer of brass alloy which has partially corroded back to a nickel-silver base metal. Some verdigris and no encrustation on spoon. Spoon is in good condition, structurally sound and with 90% of original plate still intact. The back of the handle has been ground back to nickel-silver and five makers marks are clearly visible - WP&Co trademark, "B", Fleur de Lys, Crab design, "Rd". This sheet music is "The Parade of the Tin Soldiers', the original German title, composed by Leon Jessel as a solo piece for the piano in 1905. The work is also known as "The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers". In 1907 the orchestra version was published, Opus 123. (Op. 123, as written on the cover). The sheet music was published by Sole Publishers for the British Empire, Enoch & Sons Ld (1890-1927) of 58 Great Marlborough Street, London, W. Versions for all other countries were published by Neinrichshofen's, Verlag, Magdeburg. Orchestral and Military arrangements of the music were published by Hawkes & Son, Denman St, Piccadilly Circus, London, Leon Jessel (Jan. 22, 1821 to Jan. 4, 1942) was a German composer who was born a Jew and converted to Christianity in 1894. His works included a wide variety of music including 'The Parade of Tin Soldiers' (Die Parade der Zinnsoldaten). Jessel was also a music conductor and bandmaster. The instrumental piece 'Die Marokkanische Patrouille' (The Moroccan Patrol) was published in 1911, Opus 227. He was also known for his operettas 'Schwarzwaldmädel'(Black Forest Girl), presented in 1917, and 'Die Postmeisterin' (The Postmistress), presented in 1921. In December 1941 he was arrested and then tortured by the German Gestapo; he died in January 1942. In the early 1920s, The Parade of the Tin Soldiers became very popular; it was presented as part of a show and was re-titled The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. It was also made into a film and its recording was a hit single record. The music continues to be played and presented and is a Christmas-time favourite.This music is significant for its connection with the German composer Leon Jessel, a victim of the Germans for being born a Jew, even though he converted to Christianity in his youth. It is also significant as a popular work of music composed in the early 1900s and later used for a variety show and a film. The music an example of entertainment in the early 20th century that has endured to current times and often played at Christmas celebrations.Book of sheet music for four tunes.
