Issued to Essendon supporters at the Round 20 game, Essendon v Collingwood, at the MCG on 13 Aug., 2010, which recognised the significant contribution that seatbelts have made to saving lives over 40 years. Essendon's David Hille was the spokesman for the event. Plastic banner rolled tightly on to a handle at each end so that it opens like a roller blind and rolls shut when released. Banner is black with Essendon bomber logo on left and "Goal!" in large red letters. Reverse has "Belt up" in large red letters over a stylised red seat belt with white TAC logo at bottom. Handles are grey plastic. Package also contains two grey plastic suction caps so that unrolled banner can be stuck to a window. Clothing. Five sided green, silk, beaded bag. Lined with green linen gauze like fabric. Ten .8 cm brass loops sewn to the top of the bag.Has a drawstring of green cotton thread. Two peaked flaps, 7.5 cm deep, fall from below the drawstring over the top of the bag. Flaps and the main body of the bag have exquisite tiny glass beads - white, and clear-(reflecting the green of the fabric) in an absolutely exquisite floral design. These beads are the tiniest beads imaginable. The underside of the flaps is lined with the linen gauze, and an overlay of silk. Black cotton with all-over gold paisley type floral patterning. Fully lined with brown cotton fabric. A slight train at the back hemline, and two V shaped flaps-one either side of the back opening, which probably accommodated bussell-like padding. The skirt is tightly gathered at the back to facilitate the padding. Front of skirt is flat, with a little easing of gathers. Pocket inside right hand side seam. The commemorative booklet 'Our Invited Guests for the Opening of the First Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia : An open directory of the guests invited to Melbourne, May 9th 1901' lists invitees from each Australian State. The Misses Dowling are not on this list, however the booklet does list The Hon Thomas Dowling MLC, and his "lady" from Camperdown as well as Edwin Percy Dowling esq, Shire Secretary of Camperdown. Perhaps the Misses Dowling were part of this family. While not invited to the opening of Parliament on the 9th, the guest list for later events may have been extended on other occasions.The document design has artistic and aesthetic merit. While it is not rare, it is representative of the kinds of formal designs used for the Australian Commonwealth celebrations at the time of Federation, and is in excellent condition. Such items as this invitation have local, state and national historic significance as mementoes of a key moment in Australia's history. The correspondent of the Argus on 10 May 1901 wrote: "The Parliament of the Commonwealth was opened yesterday by the Duke, of Cornwall and York, under a Commission signed by Queen Victoria and subsequently endorsed by King Edward VII. The ceremony was marked by the splendour and solemn impressiveness which befitted its historic importance. An immense assemblage of spectators, drawn mainly, of course, from this state, but in part also from each of the other federated states, and including representatives of other portions of the British Empire and of foreign powers, thronged the spacious, stately, and joyously decorated edifice. The picture was magnificent. It must have printed itself indelibly on the sensitive minds of the thousands of Australians who were privileged to behold it. We may assume that artists will reproduce it in worthy and imperishable forms, and that from generation to generation it will be familiar in the households of the Commonwealth. These old spools or bobbins were used in textile mills and on looms in factories. The wooden one is a piece of the Industrial Revolution. Two vintage or antique wooden and thick cardboard industrial large sewing spools. The wooden one is an example from the Industrial Revolution. It has a round wooden top and base, with metal bands around both ends. There are two holes in one end at the side of the bigger hole in the middle which the spool would be attached to a machine. It has thick twisted discoloured cream string like thread wound around it. Ammunition shell was used in a 40 lb Armstrong Rifled Breach Loading (RBL) Gun. The shell was fired into Westernport Bay by the Hastings Battery Field Artillery in late 1800’s or early 1900’s. It was recovered by divers in recent times. It does not contain explosives because the projectile and explosive were separate items. The Armstrong 40 lb BL Gun There were 4 x 40lb Armstrong (RBL) Guns issued to the Ham and Beef Battery at Hastings Victoria. After the Hastings Battery field artillery disbanded, the 4 Guns were transferred from the Hastings Battery to the Warrnambool Battery field artillery in 1904. (There is a photograph of one of these guns on its carriage, pictured in front of the Orderly room (Drill Hall) at Warrnambool, which is now the Library of South West TAFE). The 40lb Armstrong Guns were recalled back to Melbourne when the government issued the updated 4.7inch QF (Quick Firing) Naval Guns, mounted on carriages, to the Warrnambool Garrison Artillery 1907. The Hastings Museum today holds one of the original 40lb Armstrong RBL guns that were at first at Hastings and then Warrnambool, evidenced by tracing the numbers on that gun. Typed letter to Mr Richardson from Geoffrey A Lambert regarding Victoria Hill. He states that the Minister for Mines, Hon. J. C. Balfour has asked the Department's Geologist located at Bendigo to prepare a report on the Victoria Hill area. The Minister also points out that there are conflicting interests which exists between local municipal authorities who are seeking to have mine damaged areas reclaimed for recreation or developmental projects, while some would like the past relics preserved for historical interests among tourists. Starting in around 1850, women began wearing boots that resembled the ones already worn by men in high society. Women’s Victorian boots were slightly more feminine in nature, however, than those worn by their male counterparts. The boots first worn by women extended to the middle of the calf so that her ankle would stay properly covered underneath her many skirts. These boots often featured laces or a row of buttons to keep them secure to the foot and ankle. Although usually made from durable materials like rubber and leather, boots that were worn purely for fashion were sometimes made of more elegant materials like patent leather or dyed suede. Fashion boots from the Victorian era exude all of the opulence and decadence that are unique to that time period. Design elements like scalloped trims, intricate embroidery, and lace accents were also not uncommon when it came to elaborately designed Victorian boots. Unlike men’s boots, they also boasted a slight heel that was thinner and more feminine in design. How lavish a woman’s boots were greatly depended upon how much money her family had and her place within society. This photograph forms part of the collection that has been accumulated at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria. It demonstrates that that there was an ample library once in use at the Mission. The photograph is thought to have been taken in the Chaplain's office next to the chapel. The photograph is part of a serie likely to have been taken by Bill Doyle (Reverend C.J. Bushells tea and coffee producers started in Brisbane(1883) and expanded to Sydney, Melbourne(1899), Fremantle and finally to Auckland(1937). Like other Pacific Island sourced condiments Tea and coffee were a lot easier to import than British or European goods. Local Australian industries were starting to develop and grow to overcome the long transportation times and the high costs of goods from traditional suppliers. Bushells Pty Ltd is a prime example.This "Bushells" Coffee tin is a good example of Australian "grown" condiment suppliers serving the "whole" of the Australian marketplace. Rural areas were not neglected and the purchase price for goods were a reasonable levels. Kiewa Valley experienced a population growth from the late 1940's and due to the migrant works in the Kiewa Hydro Scheme the greater use of coffee was initiated. Rural areas, on the whole, where the population was more connected to some degree with a British heritage lineage were predominately tea drinkers. The American film productions, however, screened in Australia post 1950's showing a greater degree of coffee drinking "stars" had a long term effect upon the drinking habits of the rural populous. This round tin of coffee with lid is made from pressed steel lid framed top and bottom. Sturdy cylindrical body is made of cardboard. Starting in the 18th century, glassworks in English port towns like Bristol, London, Sunderland, and Newcastle began producing hollow glass rolling pins. They were originally produced for sailors to give to loved ones, particularly young women they were hoping to woo for marriage. The Flock is a kinetic sculpture made up of 11 parts. It celebrates a local migratory bird, the ibis. The sculpture comprises tall steel poles with a steel ibis balanced on the top of each pole by its beak. Balanced on a spherical joint to allow fluid movement in all directions, each element of the Flock is designed to look like a bird in flight. This is a personal account of Arthur Ernest Tonkin's experiences during World War 2. Arthur was a member of the 147 Australian General Transport Company. He enlisted in Alice Springs and spent the war as a driver along the route between Alice Springs and Darwin. There was no railway between Alice Springs and Darwin, and the road was more like a dirt track, but was essential for transportation of troops and supplies. Blow torches like this one were widely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries before modern gas torches and propane burners became standard. Operated by pressurizing liquid fuel (kerosene or gasoline), which was vaporized and ignited to create a high-temperature flame. Commonly used for: Soldering and brazing in plumbing. Heating and softening metal for shaping. Thawing frozen pipes in cold climates. Industrial applications requiring direct flame.This is a vintage kerosene or gasoline blow torch, commonly used in soldering, metalworking, and industrial applications. The torch has a cylindrical metal fuel tank, which appears to be made of brass or steel, with signs of oxidation and patina. Attached to the top of the tank is a pump handle, used to pressurize the fuel inside the tank. The burner assembly extends from the top of the fuel tank and includes a fuel control valve (a round, serrated metal knob). The burner nozzle is housed inside a silver-coloured metal casing, likely made of cast iron or aluminium, which serves as a heat shield. A wrapped cloth insulation is present around part of the handle, likely to protect the user from heat. James Harold Claude Nixon was born 12/12/1890 and before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force was an auctioneer at Delegate. After training at Aldershot for the Royal Flying Corps he was granted an Aviators Certificate (No. 4607) by the Royal Aero Club.
