Map, Osboldstone & Co Pty Ltd, Railway and Tramway Map of Melbourne and Suburbs With Tram Timetables, 1917
The Railway and Tramway Map of Melbourne and Suburbs With Tram Timetables lists existing Cable Tram Services before the entire network was electrified. By 1917 the tramways system was divided into regions including: the Melbourne Cable Tram Service; Prahran - Malvern Electric Trams; Hawthorn Electric Trams; Melbourne, Brunswick and Coburg Electric Trams; and Brighton Beach Electric Trams. The old Outer Circle railway line is marked as ending in Deepdene, with the remainder of the line to Fairfield marked as 'Unused'. The Kew tram along High Street in 1917 ended at the Harp Junction. The Kew Spur Line is also marked on the map.The Railway and Tramway Map of Melbourne and Suburbs With Tram Timetables is historically significant as it captures at a point in time, 1917, the development of public transport infrastructure in Melbourne. As such it illustrrates the theme: Connecting Victorians by transport and communications.Printed card-covered pocket sized map that folds out with three horizontal and vertical folds. Colour map, with scale, of the rail and tram networks on one side and sixteen sections of black and white printed text and timetable information on the reverse.railway maps -- melbourne (vic.), tramways maps -- melbourne (vic.), public transport -- melbourne (vic.) -- 1910-1920, cartography -

Album, Photographs Views of Warrnambool, c 1891
This album contains photographs of many Warrnambool buildings and scenes, including Proudfoot Boatsheds, St. John’s Church, Christ Church, Shelly Beach, Hopkins Falls, Sherwood gardens and buildings, Ozone Coffee Palace, Kepler Street, Sandstone Quarries and the Titan Crane on the Breakwater. The photographs have been taken and put in album form by the photographer Joseph Jordan. The advertisements of the hotels on the inside covers place the publication of the album to the years1891-2. We have another album similar to this but there are six photographs in this album (VC000799) that are not in the other album. These extra photographs are of the original gardens and buildings of Sherwood. This is a most important album as the photographs are clear and show a good cross-section of Warrnambool in the early 1890s. Some of the photographs are not represented in other collections (eg Sherwood gardens) and so are of vital historical significance. The advertisements are also of great use to researchers. This album has a brown hard cover and contains three pages of local advertisements and sixteen pages of photographs and 32 photographs back to back. The pages have been bound but some pages have come loose. There is a fold-out section of a 180 degree panorama of Warrnambool taken from Liebig Street hill. The edges of these pages have been taped.Front Cover- Views of Warrnamboolwarrnambool, views of warrnambool, photos of warrnambool -

Photograph, "Aberystwyth" 40 Wandsworth Road, Surrey Hills, 29 January 1998
Built about 1905 in the Federation style with ‘Queen Anne’ influence. An early owner was Lionel Jones, a journalist and later Eustace Coghill of the Coghill family. After other owners the house was sold and in 1998 removed on two semi-trailers believed to be heading for the San Remo area. The name Aberystwyth possibly come from an association with Wales. Although a thriving sea-side town in the summer, the historic town of Aberystwyth is better known as a university town and the centre of learning for Wales, as it is also home to the National Library of Wales and boasts the largest Arts Centre in Wales. The town is huddled between three hills and two beaches.A coloured photograph of a close-up of the verandah fretwork, the roof without the tiles and a chimney.wandsworth road, surrey hills, federation style, queen anne style, mr lionel jones, journalists, mr eustace coghill, aberystwyth, house names -

Photograph - Boarding School Beach at Port Fairy, c.1926
Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 23 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. In the 1920s, the photographer travelled throughout Victoria, including on the west coast from Port Campbell to Port Fairy. Trips were presumably made by train and by foot. Lynda Tieman and her team at the Port Fairy Historical Society were able to identify a number of Henry Christian's photographs of Port Fairy, of which this is one. The scene is of Boarding School Beach at Port Fairy and of bathing boxes on the stone reef.henry beater christian (1886-1962), landscape photography, christian-washfold collection, photograph albums, port fairy (vic.), boarding school beach -

Film - Video Recording - Digital, Tim Allen, What Lies Beneath Port Phillip Bay, 27 Apr 2021
Digital video recording of PMHPS meeting held on 27 April 2021. We all know Port Phillip Bay – or we think we do. It’s the beach on our back doorstep and our outdoor playground. But the Bay’s natural history, and its underwater values are largely unknown to most. And the Port Phillip Bay of today is very changed from the Bay at the time of white settlement. So, what of its future? Tim ALLEN's talk delves beneath the Bay’s surface veneer, to uncover stories of lost sharks and oyster beds, scallop wars, sewerage, and shipping; a visual potted history of key points in time.port phillip bay, natural environment - beaches and foreshore, tim allen -

Phillip Island and District Historical Society Inc.
Photograph, 1950 approx
Donated by J W Gliddon with his comments on back of photograph. Taken when motorbike and car racing were run around the roads on Phillip Island. Racing first came to Phillip Island in 1927 in the form of a 200 mile road race for motorcycles on a circuit encompassing Cowes and Rhyll. In the next year, a shorter rectangular course, again on public roads, was used for the running of what became the first Australian Grand Prix. Eight successive Australian Grand Prix were run on this course before the race was moved elsewhere. Finally in 1935, racing was discontinued and Phillip Island lapsed into the tranquility and peacefulness of its quiet country and beach atmosphere.Black & White photograph of motorcycle riders on bike and sidecar. Crowd watching at the side of the road. See Historical Information for more detail re motorcycle racing on Phillip Island. On back: "This picture could become historically interesting as machines and methods change. It was taken about the year 1950. Perhaps earlier." motor cycle racing -

RMS Oceana postcard produced by Vienna Studio, 68 Beach Street, Port Melbourne. The Vienna Studio was run by Austrian-born Kallman FEITEL, first in Richmond around 1902 then in Port Melbourne from around 1904. The Oceana was built 1887-88 for P&O at Harland & Wolff, Belfast, Northern Ireland and sailed on her maiden voyage from London for Melbourne and Sydney on 19 March 1888. The Oceana collided with the Pisagua when leaving the Port of Tilbury, England and sank on 15 March 1912. Melbourne Legacy
Photograph - Junior legatee outing, Somers Camp, 01/1968
A photo of 8 boys in a camp kitchen cleaning up after a meal. From the inscriptions it is Somers Camp in January 1968. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It came from a Legacy envelope marked "P6 Junior Legatee Camps and Hols" in red pen, and dated Jan 1977 in pencil. The contents will be items 00418 to 00425. A record of Junior Legatee camps.Black and white photo of boys cleaning up the camp kitchen.Legacy P6 in blue pen. Stamped "The Property of Melbourne Legacy" and 19 Jan 1968 in purple ink.
