Headwear - Slouch Hat, Hat, khaki, fur felt, 1986, 1986
The slouch hat is an object strongly associated with Australian identity and was introduced into the Australian military in the second half of the 19th. This hat was used by a member of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. An inside inscription (most likely referring to the owner) reads 'Griffin 49443'.The slouch hat is historically significant in the wider context of Australian army and more particularly in Australia's military involvement in the Gulf War. It also has social significance as a strong symbol of the 'Australian fighting man' and more generally for its link with Australian identity. Khaki Australian army slouch hat with left brim pinned to the side; pale green band around circumference of hat; two golden metallic badges (one in front and one on left side); four metallic rivets on top. Leather band inside and brown leather strap attached with six metallic staples. The left side badge displays a crown with the word 'Australia' under it (also known as the Commonwealth 'rising sun' pattern). The front badge displays a crown on top, a snake in the middle and the inscription 'Royal Australian Army Medical Corps'. At the bottom, another inscription reads 'Paulatim'. This medal was presented to the children of Victorian Wing - Warrant Officer and Non Commissioned Officers Academy Soldier who have served on operational deployments. As these young children endured an operational deployment of a parent who spent many months away from home in a foreign country representing the Australian Army. Following operations include Bougainville, East Timor, Indian Ocean, Solomon Islands, Meddle East Area, Afghanistan and Sinai.Presented by the Government to children whose parents had served overseas Silver medal with pale green, yellow, orange and deeper green ribbon. Medal - Commemorative Medallion
In November 2001 Australian SAS troops joined the war in Afghanistan under the operation name "Operation Slipper." Australia's military contribution to the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan ended in 2014, making Operation Slipper Australia's longest running operation. According to the Department of Defence, "the ribbon is khaki representing the dominant ground colour of the terrain, edged with light blue and white stripes representing the sky above the mountains and the snow on the mountain peaks with central stripes of purple and red representing the ADF and the conflict in Afghanistan." This commemorative medallion features the Afghanistan Medal ribbon colours encircling the figure of an ADF member holding a weapon. The image is in relief. The Cape belonged to V10909 Margaret Annie Brown who served with the AMF during WW2. Margaret A Brown enlisted on 17 September 1940 and was discharged with the rank of Major on 28 July 1944. Margaret Brown worked at the Heidelberg Hospital and also as Matron at Puckapunyal. Margaret Brown missed out on a posting to Hospital Ships working in the Pacific because of her age at the time - 40 - the cut off for the assignment was 40. Colin Quin was a National Serviceman in the 1958 intake upon completion of National Service Colin Quin joined the Regular Army. Colin served with the 21st Construction Engineers the unit went to Wewak, Borneo. After Military Service Colin worked as a refrigeration mechanic and has the interesting hobby of making model aeorplanes from beer cans.
