This photograph records the making and placing of the concrete blocks for the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater in the Warrnambool Harbour, completed in 1890. Each block weighed 20 to 30-plus tons. The huge Titan steam powered crane in the photograph played a massive role in the construction. It was able to lift the concrete blocks with its overhanging, counterbalanced arm and roll on its wheels along the rails to the required position. It then lowered the blocks into position on the concrete foundation already laid on the seabed. There are many details in the photograph that help to tell other aspects of Warrnambool's history. It appears that the photograph was once owned by B. Fisher. The photograph is part of the Western Victoria collection produced in 1891 by Brookes' Photographic Union in Victoria. Brookes' Photographic Union was a collaboration of two brothers, Frederick Augustus Brookes and his brother Albert Edward Brookes. Frederick arrived in Victoria in the early 1880's. He and Albert formed the organisation to produce collections of photographs including the districts of Geelong, Gippsland and the Western Victoria.This photograph was taken during the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater and published the year after it was completed. The project began with the Government of 1874 approving the plan, and was completed in 1890. The image records a snapshot of the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater, a construction that changed the history of the Port of Warrnambool, Photograph, sepia coloured rectangular shape, mounted between two sheets of cream card. After being out of print for 30 years this book has been reprinted in 1987 as a tribute to W.A. Bayley (dec.). WA Bayley had been a public school teacher and was principal of Bega Intermediate High when he researched and wrote his history in the 1940s. He wrote history books on all the towns where he worked,A 120 pp book titled "The Story of the Settlement and Development of Bega". Rev Walter Guthrie Bower was born in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England in 1877. He was a graduate of London University and was ordained a priest in 1901. He had been a curate of St. Michael & All Angels, Bedminster, then he became the Vicar of St. Thomas, Bristol, for 8 years prior to coming to Warrnambool in 1923. He made a lasting impression on the Parish with his teaching and Christian humility and service. He was a quiet, scholarly, Christian gentleman who endeared himself to all sections of the community. He was married to Norah Marianne. He resigned from the Vicariate of Warrnambool in 1932, to return to England to accept the living of Metfield with Withersdale, Suffolk. HIs address when he died was - The Vicarage, Metfield, Harleston, Norfolk. He died on Mar 26th, 1936 aged 59 yrs leaving his widow Norah. Norah died in 1963 aged approx 77 yrs in Horiston, Devon. The memorial tablet was unveiled in the St Nicholas chapel at the Port Melbourne mission (Beach Cnr Nott St) on Wednesday 24 June 1936. The ceremony was performed by her nephew, Reverend John Smerger Drought - her sister's son. Another plaque was erected the same month in the Williamstown Institute. (Annual Report 1936) Along with the windows in the St Peter chapel in the Central Institute, those were the 3 memorials similar to the ones erected in memory of Miss Tracy. Miss Ethel Godfrey was born in 1861 at sea on the vessel called Copenhagen. Daughter of a pioneer, and settler Frederick Race Godfrey MLA and subsequently Lay Dean at St Paul's. Ethel Studied in Melbourne and abroad at Brussels and became a singing teacher and performer. In 1906 she took on the role of Honorary General Secretary to create and lead the volunteer organisation "The Ladies Harbour Lights Guild" and subsequently helped establish similar groups in Newcastle, Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart, Adelaide and also established the mission in Southampton in the UK. The structure of the LHLG was used as a model framework by similar groups supporting Missions around Australia and the Globe. A key achievement was the fundraising campaign for the memorial chapel in St Peters built in 1917 by Walter R.Butler. She died the 7 July 1935, and is buried in the St Kilda Cemetery.On her retirement in 1930 after some 25 years, Miss Godfrey together with Chaplain Gurney Goldsmith was recognised in the journal The Church and the Sailor, as a key influence and promoter of the formation of Harbour Lights groups across the suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria and Australia, the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild, Melbourne being the first such auxiliary group in the world.Clay base rectangular plaque with inlaid blue ceramic regular tesserae surrounding the ceramic centre rectangular ceramic panel with inscription and decorative glazed detail tiles. These two small symbolic windows (27 ½ x 6 ½ inches) are in the porch (or was it the baptistery?). Entitled Baptism it could also be termed Pilgrimage with the symbols of the shell and staff and refer to the travels of seafarers. When photographed in the 1990s the windows were in poor shape and in need of conservation to replace the full text in the baptismal window ‘Ecce …. This window, in memory of Alice Sibthorpe Tracy, was unveiled on 31 October 1933 by the Right Reverend R. Stephen D.D. along with the brass tablet in the Williamstown building, and a sectile tablet in the Port Melbourne building. (AR 1933). "A scheme has been set in operation to raise funds so that a memorial may be erected to Miss A. Sibthorpe Tracy, who has done so much for the Victoria Missions to Seamen. It has been decided that a companion window to that of "The Light of the World" will be placed in St. Peter's Chapel, the design being that of a figure of Hope with her hand on a ship's anchor. The window will show a foreground of beach and pebbles, backed by breaking rollers and a flecked sky. Mrs J. W. The funds were raised by the crew of the ship Manunda. This window, in memory of the crew of the ship Jervis Bay, was unveiled on the 14 December 1947 by Mrs Johnson, wife of the Bishop of Ballarat. As mentioned on the plaque below the window, it was a gift of the Ballarat branch of the HLG and the Lucas Girls from Ballarat. E Lucas & Co was a textile company in Ballarat. The "Lucas girls" are known Ballarat-wide for their commitment to philanthropic work during the period of the Great War. "When Miss Karen Brady, typist of Westgarth St, Northcote, was knocked down by a motor-car at the corner of Heidelberg Road and Fenwick St, Clifton Hill, about midnight on Saturday (3 January 1942), her skull was fractured, and she died in St Vincent's Hospital 4 hours later. She was aged between 45 and 50. Miss Brady was for many years an enthusiastic worker for the Harbour Lights Guild for the Missions to Seamen. She worked there at the canteen many nights during the week, and assisted in many other ways at the mission. Mission officials said yesterday that Miss Brady had been a "splendid worker for the mission". This book has social and historical significance because it shows the games, sorts, exercises, and gymnastics, swimming, dancing and rhymes that were done in the mid 20th century. This shows that teachers were aware of the importance of PE during this time. Many of these principles are still being taught today and with so many children in Victoria being obese through lack of exercise, this is very topical book! Author, Philip Edward Muskett (1857-1909), medical practitioner and health reformer, was born on 5 February 1857 at Collingwood, Melbourne, son of English-born, Particular Baptist parents Charles Muskett, bookseller, and his wife Phoebe, née Charlwood. His work focused on infant health and welfare. His writing advocated radical changes in the diet of Australians. His last work, The Attainment of Health (1909), was a detailed guide to foods to eat or avoid for specific complaints and diseases. This book was owned by Helena Warren of Newmerella, Orbost.
