It is the railway bridge over the Campaspe River at Rochester, Vic. original to the construction of the line. It was taken late on a Saturday morning and shows the regular goods train of that period approaching, then crossing the bridge. I originally planned to take just one view. The approaching train was first then it was a rapid run back along the raised river bank to get the broadside shot. I had little time to steady myself or properly check camera settings, hence the slightly soft focus etc. The train would eventually continue over the Echuca Iron Bridge into NSW. The P.S Adelaide had been displayed in the Hopwood Gardens from 1960. In 1984 The City of Echuca decided to put the paddle steamer back in the river. This happened over several weeks and involved digging a boat ramp into the bank in front of the Hopwood Gardens. This involved a lot of skill and people. It also attracted a lot of attention. Crowds gathered every day to watch the task. In this photograph the P.S Pevensey in the foreground still has the name P.S Philadelphia writing on its name plate. The P.S Pevensey was used in the TV Series 'All The Rivers Run', as the P.S Philadelphia. Relates to a series of images Reg. nos. The gasworks in Anstruther St, allowed the streets of Echuca to be lit at night, therefore improving the safety of the citizens of the town. The gasworks were operational for many year providing cooking and lighting facilities to houses as well as to the streets. This picture shows the height of the flood in either 1906 or 1916? The Senior Citizens Club now stands on the site. The Central Kindergarten and Echuca Primary School are also nearby.This postcard is significant because it shows the height of the floods before the town levee banks had been built. It also shows the need for flood proofing the town. It also shows the size of the gasworks in the early 20th Century. This original script was from a television mini series titled 'All The Rivers Run' that was filmed in Echuca in 1982. This building opened on 19 October 1874. The front section of this building including 8 classrooms, the headmaster's office and the bell tower were destroyed by fire 27 February 1890. "The burnt section of the school was rebuilt along the lines of the original building and today the red brick facade and bell tower are a feature of the Hare Strett skyline" (Echuca Stetchbook, Blyth, I, 1978, p.32.Henry Hopwood, founder of Echuca, saw the need to establish a national school to educate the children of Echuca. The first National School opened in October 1858 in a framed tent. Construction of the first brick school house began in 1859 on the site of the original Post Office in Hare street. Later the site changed to the southern end of Hare street and this building was opened 19 October 1874. The old Loco shed was built in 1864, as part of Echuca's rail extension, to service both passengers and goods but mainly wool, from the Riverina to Melbourne.The coming of the railway had a significant impact on Echuca and the transportation of produce, people and goods between Melbourne and the Riverina. The extension of the rail line from Bendigo began in 1862 and the final rail was laid in 1864. The Echuca line went into service immediately. The trains average speed was 20-25miles/hour double the pace of the Cobb & Co coaches. P. S. Adelaide was a logging steamer operating between Echuca and Barmah forest. It was built in 1866 by G. Linklater, Echuca. Original owner J. G. Grassie, Poon Boon Station & S. H. Officer, Murray Downs Station. In June 1891 she was purchased by Murray River Sawmills and spent most of her working life on the Barmah Forest run. In 1960 she was purchased by Echuca Apex Club and steamed to Echuca. Installed on a bed of cement in Hopwood Gardens, Echuca before being restored to be refloated as a significant addition to the Port of Echuca maritime fleet (Parsons, R. Ships of the Inland Rivers. 2005. p.46)The P.S Adelaide is extremely significant as it it the oldest known wooden hulled paddle steamer in the world. She was built in Echuca in 1866 and still operates on the Murray River today. The old Echuca Post Office was built circa 1877, a two-storey stucco building with a clock tower over the entrance, on the north east corner of Hare and Anstruther streets. In the front of the building is a small cream brick kiosk used as a bus stop and as a stall for charity group's to sell produce. On the far northern corner the spire of St.Mary's church can be seen above the roof of the Post Office.The old Echuca Post office is at the northern end of the shopping precinct in Hare street Echuca. The building is a beautiful grand building of the late 1870's which was built as a post office on the ground floor and a residence above. The Paddle Steamer Etona was named after Eton College in England. In its earlier days it served as an Anglican Mission boat closer to the mouth of the Murray River. It ended up being bought by two Echuca businessmen, Ian Stewart, a solicitor, and Phil Symons, a chemist. They spent a couple of weeks steaming it up from Goolwa to Echuca where they placed it on the slipway to undertake restoration work. Ian Stewart's Holden is seen alongside the boat. The Moama Slipway was located on the NSW side of the river directly opposite Evans Bros. Sawmill. The boats would be pulled up the slipway on cradles (visible under the boat) by the steam winch seen in the foreground. George Coop had a minor role in assisting with the restoration of the Etona. New redgum planks were bolted to her underside and these were sealed (or caulked) by Phil Symons and Ian Stewart by ramming bitumen soaked rope into the gaps.
