This finely crafted skirt has been made at the Fletcher Jones clothing factory. David Fletcher Jones served in World War One and following this had an itinerant hawker's business in the Western District . In 1924 he opened a tailoring shop in Liebig Street, Warrnambool and began to specialise in the production of men's trousers. In 1946 he opened a shop in Melbourne and in 1947 the firm of Fletcher Jones and Staff Pty. Ltd. was registered. In 1948 a clothing factory was opened in Warrnambool and in the 1960s Fletcher Jones shops had extended to other states of Australia and later the merchandise was extended to men's and women's clothing. It was one of the best known businesses in Australia. The Fletcher Jones company was dissolved in 2011. This is a fine example of a Fletcher Jones item of clothing. The Fletcher Jones clothing business was one of the most important businesses ever to have been in Warrnambool and the factory gardens survive as a tourist attraction in Warrnambool.This is a reversible black, grey and white checked woollen, woman's skirt. It is fully pleated on a waist band which can be buttoned either side. Bacchus Marsh Express of 7 November 1874 reports that this building was designed and erected by Mr Jeremiah Ryan for Mr H. G. Salter, draper. Mr Salter gave the name of "Hall of Commerce" to the building, a term in common usage at the time. The building was of a substantial size. In the Express of January 4 1879 Messrs Basham and Bradley advertised a wide variety of goods including drapery, millinery, ready-made clothing, boots and shoes and furniture. At the front of the building was the first pavement in the township. This photo forms a contrast with the photograph (also taken by Stevenson & McNicoll in 1883) of Timmons Clothier and Draper, but depicting an older building from 1857. This business was on the verge of closure, Mr Timmons conducting his business as a travelling salesman, taking his goods by horse and cart to outlying districts. The image provides an example of the growing scale of retail development in Bacchus Marsh in the late nineteenth century.This photograph is a record of a prominent commercial building that has undergone substantial change. David Fletcher Jones commenced his tailoring and hawking business in the 1920’s. The business expanded through the decades to become the main manufacturing employer in the city of Warrnambool. The business moved from Liebig Street around 1947 to a site in East Warrnambool which was once an old quarry. The factory which was built at “Pleasant Hill” manufactured quality clothing, initially men’s trousers, suits which expanded in later times to include ladies’ wear. A network of stores was opened throughout Australia to sell the garments. Sportsgirl is an Australian fashion house. Founded in 1948, the first Sportsgirl store was located in Swanston Street, Melbourne. During the 1950s the brand continued to expand its stores in Melbourne. It expanded to Sydney in the 1960s. The dress was donated by Dione McIntyre.The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre. At the other end of the chronological spectrum are a number of outfits belonging to, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. These include outfits created by notable late 20th century Australian and/or international fashion designers. The McIntyre Collection is significant historically and artistically as it includes examples of design that demonstrate changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period. He was reported missing during an operation near Scilly Islands and was presumed killed on 03/10/1943. The dress is date after the Edwardian Period due to the absence of tucks and frills. This dressmaker's model has been made by a New York firm (1971 model) and comes from the Fletcher Jones Factory in Warrnambool. It would have been used for making and displaying ladies' clothing made at the factory. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in World War One and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he opened a men's wear shop in Warrnambool and manufactured in sute. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop opened in melbourne and in 1948 a factory was established in Warrnambool with a new company, Fletcher Jones and Staff begun in 1951. The company initially specialized in men's trousers but later expanded into both men's and women's clothing. It became an Australia-wide company known throughout the country until it ceased in 2011 and the Warrnambool factory buildings were sold.This dressmaker's model is of considerable interest as a memento of the Fletcher Jones and Staff Company, founded in Warrnambool, employing many local people for a great number of years and known throughout Australia for its quality products and pioneering business model as a founder and staff co-operative.This is a dressmaker's model with the body section (bust and torso) having a fabric cover over a wooden core. The top section is bronze-coloured with a silver rim. Beneath the body section is a wire frame and a metal base on castors. The castors are rusty and the fabric is broken in places. Made by Adolphina Noll in 1934 in Wilmington, South Australia as a wedding gift for Mr Joe and Mrs Ida (aka 'Ike') Fulwood. Mrs Noll was Ike's maternal grandmother and was 69 when she made the quilt. (It was used on a bed in a plain heavy woven calico cover which was secured with safety pins. The cover is not in existence.) It was given to Lois Densham in Adeleide from Ike, who was a close friend of Lois' sister, Doreen Saunders.Double bed sized quilt cover insert made from several items of clothing: men's frock coat (possibly from the 1900's), another men's coat (date unknown), a woman's coat with a fur trim on the pockets (possibly from the 1930's) and a woman's dress or skirt (circa 1920-30's). The clothing pieces have been arranged in an apparent haphazard way to create a shape with straight edges and corners to fit neatly into a cover onto a bed. Lining materials are apparent on the back of the woman's skirt/dress pieces which may also show that this item of clothing was either taken apart or never finished. This booklet has been produced as a handbook for the employees of the Warrnambool-based clothing business of Fletcher Jones and Staff. Sir David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) was born in Bendigo and served with the A.I.F. in World War One. He and an ex-war mate began trading in the Western District as itinerant hawkers of manchester and later Fletcher Jones continued on his own, gradually expanding the business until, in 1922, he opened a menswear and tailoring business in Warrnambool. By 1941 he was making nothing but men’s trousers, supplying retailers in over 100 outlets. In the late 1940s he turned his business into a Co-Operative and later expanded the business to include both men’s and women’s clothing. He opened a factory in Warrnambool, which, with it beautiful gardens, became a tourist attraction. The factory site was called Pleasant Hill. When he died in 1977 his business was one of the largest clothing manufacturers in Australia and possibly the world but, with the competition from imported clothing, the enterprise did not survive into the 21st century. It is presumed that Doug Ferguson was an employee of Fletcher Jones and that the gold label award was for his work or that of his department. This staff handbook for employees of the clothing business of Fletcher Jones & Staff is of major interest as this business, known nationally, was one of the most significant businesses ever to operate in Warrnambool. The handbook is of interest in itself as it has the Fletcher Jones logo, interesting material about the business philosophy of the business and Fletcher Jones himself, an autographed photograph of him and some significant photographs of the business, including indoor photographs of the factory.This is a soft cover book of 14 pages. These are samples of the material used at the Fletcher Jones Factory in Warrnambool to make garments for men (suits, trousers, shorts) and women (suits, slacks, skirts, shorts). Fletcher Jones Clothing Factory was a key industry in Warrnambool from 1948 to its closure in 2005. The business was founded by David Fletcher Jones (1897-1977), a clothing manufacturer and retailer who worked as a hawker in the Western District following service with the A.I.F. in World War One. In 1924 Fletcher Jones opened three shops in Liebig Street selling men’s wear, hosiery and linen and operating a small tailoring business. He moved his shop to another location in Liebig Street and began to concentrate on men’s trousers production. In 1946 he opened a shop in Collins Street in Melbourne and eventually had stores and factories all over Australia. In Warrnambool he opened his factory at Pleasant Hill in Flaxman Street in 1948 and became a major Warrnambool employer, with over 1000 employees at one time. He transformed his business into a co-operative, with the name, ‘Fletcher Jones and Staff’ registered in 1947. The business diversified into other ranges of clothing for men and women but failed to compete with cheaper overseas clothing imports and the factory and shops were closed in the early 21st century. These pieces of material are of some interest as examples of the materials used in one of the most important businesses in Warrnambool and one that was of national significance for many decades. The Fletcher Jones label was well-known throughout Australia and Fletcher Jones himself was a prominent person in Warrnambool’s history, not only for his business interests but also for his philanthropy, his advocacy of business co-operatives and his support for many Warrnambool institutions. The Fletcher Jones Factory Gardens are still today a feature of Warrnambool and a tourist attraction. These two packets contain samples of materials used at the Fletcher Jones factory in Warrnambool. One packet (VC000690.1) contains four pieces of woollen material, one grey striped, one grey weave, one navy and one green, red and white tartan. This cream and green patterned vest is said to have been made for William Herbert Teal as part of his "trouseau" on the occasion of his marriage to Daisy Edith Davis on April 14th 1916 at St. Peter's Church, Merino, Victoria, Australia. It is a handmade waistcoat but it is not known who made it. William Teal was born in 1889 to Elijah Teal and Isabella Campbell Reid in Camperdown, Victoria and after marrying, William and Daisy also lived (and worked as farmers) in the Camperdown area. They had seven children. Daisy died in 1962 and William died in 1975. A wedding portrait of William and Daisy shows William wearing a dark suit consisting of a single breasted coat, trousers, good shoes, gloves and a shirt with a stiff, high collar, however if he is wearing this vest, it is unfortunately hidden under his coat. Although by 1916, men's "ready to wear" clothing were widely available, this waistcoat was handmade (possibly by his mother or sister or future wife) and has been preserved by his family for almost one hundred years. Men's suits in the early part of the twentieth century were predomininantly three piece, consisting of a jacket, vest ( or waistcoat) and trousers made from matching fabrics. On special occasions (such as a marriage) the groom might also wear gloves and have a flower in his buttonhole. Some men liked to wear a watch attached to their waistcoat with a fob chain.This item is of significance as a rare example of a man's vest that was made for a special occasion (William Teal's marriage in 1916) and preserved by his family for several generations.Man's handmade vest with a green and cream patterned brocade front, trimmed with green cord around the edges and featuring four inset pockets (also trimmed with the green cord). It has six buttonholes down the left front edge (plus a hand embroidered buttonhole to hold a fob chain) and six corresponding holes for shank buttons (which are missing) down the right front edge. The back and lining are made from cream cotton fabric. The back has a centre seam and a strap with a metal buckle with prongs (to allow for adjusting the length).
