This pencilled letter from 1892, was written on the steamer 'Success' by Mr Terry Davidson's grandmother, Frances Edith Ashe was posted to her sister, Florence (Floss) when the steamer arrived at Pooncarrie en route to the Murray and Echuca. Frances Edith (who signs the letter with her nickname 'Yeeds') was finishing her employment as a governess at the Teryawynia Station in the employ of the Gilberts. Teryawynia is situated on the Talyawalka Creek some 30 kms from the Darling River. The beginning point for the river journey recorded as being Henley Outstation - this being some 50 kms upstream from Menindee. At the time of writing this letter, she was 20 years old and on her second job as a governess. Her sister Floss was three years older. The references to 'George' withint the letter relate to a 24-year old George Alecander Davisdon, w worker on Teryawynia while she was therre - she was to marry Geroge some six years later. the description of life onboard and of the river journey (more than family chit chat) make up the valuable historical elements to thi sletter. It is appropriate that this letter will reside within a collection that tells the story of the paddlesteamers and their part in our Australian history. Correspondence showing the return of money borrowed to fund the writing of the biography of Legatee Savige. 00782.2 and 00782.3 are letters to H.G. Brain as one of the donors who financed the publication of the biography of Sir Stanley Savige, enclosing receipts for 200 pounds (00782.1). Of particular interest is the 3d (threepenny) Victorian Stamp Duty stamp stuck to the receipts and overwritten in blue ink to denote they are duplicates, which indicative of government regulations at the time (1957). 00782.4 is a copy of a letter sent to W.B. Russell (the author) confirming the arrangements for writing and payment of the book.A record of some of the financial arrangements made by the publishing committee in order to get the biography written and published. At some stage in the photo’s timeline it had information written on the back. It was stuck down, then later removed leaving residue all over the writing making it essentially impossible to read. With the photo was a handwritten note which has been verified is what can be made out on the back of the photo. This note appears to be written to Nellie by Annie Sweeney of Culla Hill, Eltham. This copy book is for the practice of copperplate handwriting and was used at the Orbost School. It was not until the mid-20th century that Australian schools were investigating the modern cursive styles being taught overseas. Writing slates and slate pencils had been a commonplace item of everyday life in colonial Australia. Slates were generally only used by school children in the most junior grades By Class III, however, school children in Victoria had normally passed beyond the need for slates in shaping letters and used ink and copybooks instead. Writing slates often continued to be used for arithmetic exercises. the use of slates was discontinued mainly because paper became cheaper and writing on paper was deemed to be more hygienic.This item is an example of a school text book commonly used for the practice of handwriting in most primary schools in Australia. It shows a style of handwriting not commonly used today. The Cameron family is significaant in the history of Orbost.A school handwriting copy book. Historically this ledger not only details the legible hand writing of this era but also the day to day commercial activity in this region. The neatness and the diligence of those who were required to pen the information was a requirement by all who were in commercial trade. Emphasis on neatness was ingrained in students at a young age. This era was well before general typewriters and computers. Generally all students of commerce required an accuracy in writing and arithmetic. Neatness and order were a selection requirement This item clearly identifies the Kiewa Valley as having a substantial financial hub to accommodate the various commercial enterprises within a rural environment Circa 1880's. Although Kiewa Valley had mining, agriculture, cattle and sheep it was also composed of a mixed society, encompassing all levels of society at that period. This book contains the story of the Australian Companies of the Imperial Camel Corps in the First World War. The authors are George and Edmee Langley. George Langley (1891-1972) was the principal of Warrnambool High School from 1924 to 1940. He and his wife Edmee were prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool during that time. George Langley served with distinction in both World Wars and rose to the rank of Brigadier in 1944. He intended writing the history of the Australian Camel Corps but died before he could complete the work. Edmee Langley, herself a talented journalist and writer, used her husband’s collection of letters, diaries and writings to publish Sand, Sweat and Camels.This book is of interest as it was written by George and Edmee Langley who were important Warrnambool residents in the 1920s and 30s. Extracts from Edmee’s memoirs of her time in Warrnambool are held by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This is a soft cover book of 188 pages. It has a brown cover with white and yellow lettering and, on the front cover, a colour image of several men riding camels. The back cover has blurbs on the two pieces of writing in the book. The book contains many black and white photographs. Loch Ard was bound for Melbourne in 1878 loaded with passengers and cargo when it ran into a rocky reef at the base of Mutton Bird Island, near Port Campbell. Of the 54 crew members and passengers on board, only two survived: an apprentice, Tom Pearce and a young woman passenger, Eva Carmichael, who lost all of her family in the tragedy. The wreck of Loch Ard still lies at the base of Mutton Bird Island and much of the cargo has been salvaged. Some was washed up into what is now known as Loch Ard Gorge following the shipwreck. Cargo and artefacts have also been illegally salvaged over many years before protective legislation was introduced. The photograph is significant for its association with the wreck of the Loch Ard. This wreck has been protected as a Historic Shipwreck since 11 March 1982, under the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act (1976) Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from Loch Ard is significant for being one of the largest collections of artefacts from this shipwreck in Victoria. It is significant for its association with the shipwreck, which is on the Victorian Heritage Register. The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the Loch Ard. The Loch Ard collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of a large international passenger and cargo ship. The Loch Ard collection is historically significant for representing aspects of Victoria’s shipping history and its potential to interpret sub-theme 1.5 of Victoria’s Framework of Historical Themes (living with natural processes). The collection is also historically significant for its association with the Loch Ard, which was one of the worst and best known shipwrecks in Victoria’s history. The Loch Ard collection meets the following criteria for assessment: Criterion A: Importance to the course, or pattern, of Victoria’s cultural history. Criterion B: Possession of uncommon, rare or endangered aspects of Victoria’s cultural history.
