Around 1903-1905, the Todd family of Linton took over the butcher's shop previously owned and run by W. G. Bennett. The "Todd brothers" are understood to have been Paddy Todd and his brother Milton Todd. Tawonga is in the Kiewa Valley, where local farmers lived with their families. The Ryder and Briggs families have been prominent farming families in the local area since early settlement. Vera Ryder and Alli Briggs were pupils at Tawonga Primary School in the early 1920's. Marianne Hardridge married James Maggs and had 11 children. They began orcharding on Wonga Road when there was nothing but bush. Over the years it became one of the largest orchards, and they were also one of the largest families in the district. As well as helping on the land Marianne took up nursing and as Nurse Maggs brought over 500 children into the world in the Ringwood area. Mr Wehner's family was a prominent family in Orbost from the late 19th C. Hermann Wehner founded Wehner's blacksmiths at Orbost in 1889. Oswald began working with his father in 1910. In 1947, Ossie's son Tom started blacksmithing, retiring in 1991 and closing the business. The building remains in Nicholson Street, Orbost. A photograph is significant because it is of one of Orbost's blacksmiths. The Wehner family of blacksmiths (1889-1991) worked in Orbost and were the last blacksmiths operating until 1991. The right honourable Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Tennyson Somers Cocks, was born in Herefordshire. Served with distinction in the Army and was twice decorated with bravery, before being appointed as Governor of Victoria. This portrait of Lord Somers is the only one in which a Grand Master is not in masonic regalia. Lord Somers insisted he not be seen dressed in a manner which could give offence to any other organization, with which he was associated in Public Life or Private Life. He was deeply involved in the Scouting Movement and was Chief Scout in Victoria and succeeded Baden-Powell as Chief Scout of the British Commonwealth.The portrait of Lord Somers holds great significance as it is the only painting within the Library and Museum collection of a Grand Master without his masonic regalia. Due to relative long distance to haberdashery stores majority of children's garments were hand made by a local talented seamstress or mother/relative. This apron is very similar in style to the other children's clothing which indicates it could have been made in the early - mid 1900's. It is preventative of aprons which little girls wore over their dresses at the time. This items has good historical significance because it shows the style of aprons which little girls wore over their dresses in the Kiewa Valley during the early to mid 1900's. This is part of the children's clothes in the KVHS collections which gives this item more interpretive capacity. Natural coloured linen with red binding around the edges. 2 white buttons. The 8th Light Horse (Indi) Regiment superseded the 16th Light Horse in 1919. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. The Melbourne Benevolent Asylum opened in 1851. Due to a lack of other institutions in the colony at the time it was established, the Benevolent Asylum initially accommodated a wide range of people in need. This included children, until 1857 when children were transferred to the Melbourne Orphan Asylum at its new site in Emerald Hill. As Melbourne established more charitable institutions the Benevolent Asylum focused increasingly on housing the aged poor. It relocated from North Melbourne to Cheltenham in 1911. The people in the photograph are not identified, but the man is believed to be Frederick Mitchell, who farmed at Argyle (on road now known as Mitchells Road). The farm was known as Clifford Farm. Frederick Mitchell ran a butcher's shop there from the late 1880s to the mid 1890s.
