A letter that was sent from Legatee PW Powell to Legatee 'Doney' on 21st September 1928. He mentions his purpose is to record some of the early history of Legacy in a minute book of the Club, which unfortunately was missing at the time of writing. As well as saying it was formed after Stan Savige saw General Gellibrand's Remembrance Club in Hobart. Luncheon meetings were held and the first one L/ Powell attended in September 1923 had about 8 attendees - Stan Savige, Fred Forrest, Frank Selleck, Charlie Watson, Peter Eller, and Ted Pittard. L/ Powell was appointed Hon. secretary and there was discussion about the name of the club. Suggestions included 'Continuance', 'Chevron', 'Espirit de Corps', and 'Apres Le Guerre'. He says 'at that stage Legacy was not mentioned, the inspiration came later in my own offie when seeking a name that would appeal to he imagination. My recommendation to the members was covered in he first luncheon address given to the Club under the title of "Business Leadership" .' Selection of the first president included inviting General Monash and General Tivey, who both declined. Colonel Harold Cohen accepted. 'The first literature issued by the Club included: List of office bearers (deleting decorations and rank) / Constitution and By laws / Classification / Brief History (which was torn up before issue as it was felt that Legacou should be impersonal and that the principal should stand before the individual).' The notation H3 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Two legatees with James Tierney and his Corps of Commissionaires service medal. The notes on the back infer that Legatees were involved in the commemoration of James Tierney's life by arranging his burial at sea. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. He also became one of the two Commissionaires at the Shrine of Remembrance for 12 years up to 1953. The service medal he is receiving in the photo comes from the Corps of Commissionaires Association (Australia), which has information at http://www.thecorps.com.au. A summary: "The Corps of Commissionaires was founded in London 1859 by Sir Edward Walter KCB. The original aim was to provide to employment and welfare support for veterans of the Crimean War. The Corps of Commissionaires was established in Australia in New South Wales in 1939 and became based in Victoria in 1946. There are Corps members in all states in Australia from all three Australian military services. Our members range from World War 2 veterans through all conflicts to Timor and Peacekeepers. The Corps is currently an ex-service, welfare and philanthropic organisation that is located at the Veterans Centre in the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, Victoria." He was proposed as a Legatee by Stan Savige. Legatee Donald J. Simonson (Captain) – born 21.5.1920, inducted 27 July 1953, died 11.7.2010. Served in WWII in 39th Battn., Decorated with M.C. Worked as an Importer and Manufacturers Agent after the war. President of Melbourne Legacy 1970. Legatee Adrian Beattie (Captain) – born 21.3.1920, inducted 10.10.1950, died 8.8.1989. This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. Clive James was Personality of the Year in 1993, which was the 70th anniversary of Legacy. The logo said "Seventy years of constant caring 1923-1993". Clive had been a junior legatee as a boy. This A4 page could be used as a poster to promote badge week. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Legatee Donovan Joynt at the opening of the Puckapunyal Sportsman's club that was named after him. The notes, dated March 1983, could have been for a newspaper article. "IT'S A HELPING HAND... for one of Australia's most distinguished soldiers outside his own memorial at Puckapunyal. Sapper Mark Drummond of Seymour, a member of 21st Construction Squadron, which built the Memorial, holds an umbrella and commander 3rd Military District, Brigadier Geoff Cohen of Canterbury, wheels Lieutenant Colonel Donovan Joynt VC to lunch. Lt Col Joynt, 94, donated more than half the cost of the $130,000 Donovan Joynt VC Memorial Sportsman's Club in the background. A church service for Legacy widows at St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The church used for the service varies, this is believed to be St Paul's. The service is followed by a pilgrimage to the Shrine for a service and also a social gathering of a lunch together. The photos show Legatee Graham Riches holding the Legacy flag as part of the procession into the church. There was a program to send young legatees on trips on the Alma Doepel sailing ship through the 1980s and 90s. The articles from the Answer show timetables and criteria for nomination of junior legatees to be selected on the trips. One of these articles mentions the war service of the Alma Doepel - the only ship with served in World War II that was still active in 1995. These photos were in a folio of photos from 1988 to 1990. They were taken by Peter from Keesing Photographers before the journey started on 27 November 1988. Other photos from the same trip are at 01530 and taken by a Legatee. The letter was with the photos but is from a different voyage and is dated 30 December 1996. A Junior Legatee, Kim Anderson, wrote to Legacy thanking them for the opportunity to be on a 9 day voyage on the Alma Doepel. She mentions: "I learnt not only .. how to sail .. but also about teamwork, responsibility, friendship and respect." Also: "As one of the older children who attend these activities I feel I can now appreciate the thought and organisation that goes into these days and camps much more." The photo shows Legatees Pat Hanna (left) and Frank Doolan (right) with a wreath at a war memorial on Anzac Day in 1936. The wreath was an interesting design with a torch to resemble the Legacy logo. From the pencil note on the reverse it was thought it might be the cenotaph in Whitehall, London. Pat Hanna lived in London for a number of years. It might also be the cenotaph that was in Spring St, near Parliament house, until the Shrine of Remembrance was dedicated in 1937. (see photo at 01371). The two were very similar in design as the Victorian one was a half size replica of the London one. Pat Hanna (born George Patrick Hanna; 18 March 1888 in Whitianga, New Zealand) was a New Zealand-born film producer ; he was a soldier of the First World War who entertained postwar audiences with the stage show 'Diggers', that was adapted to a film of the same title in 1931.An early Anzac day ceremony with a Legacy laying a wreath. It is not known if it was with the junior legatees or as a social outing for the Legatees. It is possible that it is the same day out as the joyride over Melbourne from a regional airfield (at 01016) if the airfield was in the Yarra Valley. A photo of 2 legatees (the man with glasses is L/ Schofield) with a junior legatee, talking to Miss Enez Domec-Carre. It appears to be a photo of legatees checking on the progress at one of the many girls classes run by Enez. Enez was the supervisor of the girls classes held at Legacy House for many years. She organised many annual demonstrations and was held in high regard by Legacy. The library at Legacy House is named in her honour. See also a newspaper article at 00978 which outlines her achievements, a summary of her career at 00458 and 00129. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy as assistant to Mrs Gilles (wife of a Legatee) later became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes. The man in glasses is L/ Schofield and the other names and date are unknown. A colour slide a junior legatee at the steering wheel of a ship during Operation Float. It is believed to be in 1959 as other slides that year were in the same brand of slide mount. Operation Float was an event run by Melbourne Legacy to take Junior legatees on an outing. It could have been to naval boats such as HMAS Cerberus or to a Yacht club. It gave the junior legatees the opportunity to see a naval boat in action, spend time on the water or try sailing. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. The dinner on Saturday 4 November 1939 was held to celebrate Brigadier Savige's appointment to Command the 17th Infantry Brigade, 6th Division, 2nd AIF. The menu is included and the order of service with speeches by Sir John Gellibrand and a response by Stan Savige. A copy of both are also in the archive. There are five quotes through menu that sum up common sentiments of Stan Savige. Including 'Leave it to me and my little playmate'; 'This is the tamest fight I've seen - let's liven it up'; 'The only "experience" is trust in God then trial and error.' Savige's subsequent exploits in WWII are detailed in Chapter 4 of 'There goes a man' by W.B. Russell, which chronicles not only battles fought but also the politics which blighted his command until the end of the war. Photograph of Alf Argent, who was President of Melbourne Legacy in 1988. It could be a professional photo taken for use in publications during his term as president. From a piece in the 1987 Annual Report which introduces him: "Alfred Argent, born in Lang Lang 1927 comes to the Presidency of Melbourne Legacy with a unique service record. At 18 he enlisted in the A.I.F. He was discharged to enter Duntroon, was commissioned and served in Japan, Korea, the UK, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, and the United States. He then joined the Public Service and served in the Antarctic Division, Public Services Board and the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation. Currently he is a part-time member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal." Part of a photo album (Cat.No. 01588), with a photo of Donovan Joynt and Queen Elizabeth II reading from a pamphlet he is holding. Another copy of this photo is marked as 17 March 1977, it is believed to when the Queen visited Royal Park. It is unknown who the veteran on the right is. Queen Elizabeth visited Melbourne as part of her Silver Jubilee tour of Australia and attended a children's rally in Royal Park wearing this outfit. A crowd of 18,000 people greeted her. Footage of the visit can be seen in National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NSFA-ID 44325).
