Although the first recorded burial at Whroo (7 km south of Rushworth) was in 1858, it is believed earlier unrecorded burial took place. The official cemetery was established in 1860 and contains approx. 400 burials although many are unmarked. Gotthold Schnerring, his wife, Matron Schnerring and family were internees in Camp 3 Rushworth during WW2. Matron Schnerring was in charge of the camp hospital. It was handed down to her daughter Mrs W Dick (1933) of Harston, then to her daughter Mrs Ruby Williams (1952) of Tatura and then to her son Brian Williams in 1997. James Roberts was born at Rushworth, Victoria, in 1872. He matriculated and graduated from Melbourne University in Civil Engineering. He had recently re-entered university to study medicine. While in university he was a lieutenant of the University Corps of Officer and then obtained a commission in the Victorian Mounted Rifles. At the outbreak of war, Roberts immediately volunteered for service in South Africa. He was in the first contingent - mounted infantry unit. He was mentioned in dispatches. Helga Griffin, daughter of Austrian engineer father and German mother. Interned aged 6 years and sent to Australia with her parents and young brother. Five years interned in Camp 3 near Rushworth, then released to Melbourne. Helga vividly describes her early childhood in Persia. The mixed emotions of her whole family during the internment experience and postwar, trying to adjust to a new country, new culture, new language. Dr Carl von Brandenstein was born in 1909 in Hanover, Germany. He studied oriental languages and the history of religion at Berlin University (1928-1934) and Leipzig (1938-1939). His doctoral thesis was a dissertation on the iconography of Hittite gods. He was arrested in Persia in 1941 and sent to Australia where he was interned at Loveday Camp South Australia and in Camp 1 Tatura from January 1945 until his release in August 1946.Four artworks in a dark wood frame with terracotta coloured matte. There were 7 camps in the area during World War II which held about 4,000-8,000 people at any one time. 3 camps housed Prisoners Of War who were enemy servicemen captured in various theatres of war around the world and transported to Australia for the duration of the war. The remaining 4 camps held Internees who were civilians living in Australia or other Allied territories and countries at the outbreak of war and were deemed to be a security risk because of their nationality. Photos in possession of Arthur Severino, a garrison member at Dhurringile, who also helped maintain the powerplant?. Passed on to his son, William (Bill) on his death, along with a sketch of Dhurringile (cat. C0906). The only information known about the photos is what was written on or beside them & that they were from Arthur's time served as a garrison member at Dhurringile. Arthur also apparently helped to maintain the powerplant whilst at Dhurringile.
