The Bendigo Post Office was built between 1883 and 1887 by McCulloch and McAlpine. It was designed by George W Watson in the 2nd Empire architectural style.Colour printed envelope - Bendigo Post Office Centenary 1887-1987. Envelope has a 37c stamp with an image of a cockatoo, which has been stamped with a black stamp dated 30 Sept 1987, Vic 3550 - the 'first day" of issue. The information in this booklet was prepared by a University Investigation Committee formed in Warrnambool in 1961 to present the case for the establishment of a university in the Warrnambool area. The chairman of this committee was the Mayor of Warrnambool, Cr P. O’Sullivan and the secretary was W. L. George of Warrnambool. This submission was unsuccessful at the time but campaigning for a university continued. In 1961 Warrnambool Technical School in Timor Street was offering both secondary and tertiary courses in the technical and trades areas and in 1969 the tertiary section of this Technical School became the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education. The tertiary section was relocated in 1984 to Sherwood Park, a 94 hectare site on the Princes Highway five kilometres from Warrnambool’s C.B.D. In 1990 Deakin University established a regional campus at Sherwood Park after a merger with the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education. This booklet has some historical significance as it contains the information collated on the campaign in Warrnambool and the Western District for a university to be established in the Warrnambool area.This is a soft cover booklet of 48 pages. This is a program for a local theatrical performance. It was produced and directed by Frances Sinclair and contains a number of dance and musical items. There are a number of local Warrnambool names among the performers such as K T Swinton, Rex Fotheringham, Mavis MacDonald, Miss Rooney, W Goodall, John Reid, George and June Philpot. The dancers ranged from tiny tots, Petite ballerinas, Corp de ballet to the belles De Paris. Some of the other items on the program are the Scottish Samba, Tut and Khamen and Fiesta in Granada by Ferdinande Del Campo Caravani111 and Monty Bellow the Atomic Bull & Co which would suggest that it around the time of the Atomic testing in the Montebello Islands in the 1950’s. A program which shows the artistic side to the city and associated humour and talent. It has a large number of names of those involved in the production and performance and would be typical of concerts performed around the country at that time. The World War One Memorial Stained glass windows in the Barkly Street Uniting Church resulted from a request made in 1919 by the Barkly Street Young Men's Club to be given permission to raise money to pay for the project. The window was designed by Fisher Co. Pty Ltd, and was unveiled by a former army chaplain - either Rev. J.A. Gaunt or Rev. Bladen on the 14th March 1920. The total cost of the windows was 171 pounds 10 shillings. When the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Act was passed in June 1902, and a national Postmaster General's Department (the PMG) was established the responsibility the nation's mail and telephone services fell on local Post Offices. The Bendigo Post Office was designed by Public Works architect George W Watson and constructed between 1883 and 1887. The two story brick structure with basement has unpainted rendered facades and a 43m high clock tower complete with 6 bell carillon. The facades are elaborately decorated with Corinthian pilasters, balustrading, lions' heads and the state mansard roof with cast iron ridging and finials. (VHR #4739). Situated on Pall Mall it has always been called the Bendigo Post Office even though it was not until 1891 that the name Bendigo was given to the town. The Bendigo Post Office housed much more than just postal services and the building contained many early government departments and services needed for a growing district. The building celebrated its centenary on the 30th September 1987 to much fan fare with Ted Rankins, the then Postal Manager planning many of the week long events including tours of the post office, a grand parade with cake and staff in period costume, a ball at the Shamrock and a barbeque in Rosalind Park. The Post Office ceased providing postal services in 1997 after the privitisation Australia Post and Telstra but continues to play a central role for the community, providing important services to visitors and locals alike. Currently it is occupied by Bendigo Tourism and includes two exhibition spaces including the Living Arts Space and Djaa Djuwima a dedicated and permanent First Nations Gallery. Activities at the Post Office are supported by City of Greater Bendigo staff and a dedicated group of volunteers. A photo of a troop ship in 1917. This could be the ship Private John Basil McLean travelled to Europe on, and the signatures were his shipmates and the photo was kept as a souvenir of the voyage. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 on the transport "Medic" for Plymouth, UK, arriving on 18 February 1917. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving Portsea in 1920.
