A redevelopment of the Diamond Village area included a multi storey apartment block which required the removal of this tree (Tree 10) on the plans. A VCAT decision ruled that the development be no higher than 4 storeys, and a maximum of 15 dwellings. Crotonhurst was the estate of Mr William F. Langdon and his wife Sophia, the daughter of judge George H.F. Webb. A drawing room meeting was organised here by the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild on 13 July 1926 hosted by Mrs Langdon. In an article published in the Australasian on Saturday 24 July 1926 we could read: " A drawing room meeting in connection with the Victoria Missions to Seamen took place on July 13, at Crotonhurst, Caulfield, the picturesque home of Mrs. W. F. Langdon, when the chaplain to the mission (the Rev. J. R. Weller) and other speakers explained the purpose of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, and urged its claim to interest and support from the people of Victoria. The chair was taken by the mayor of Caulfield (Councillor Page), who spoke sympathetically of the fine work being carried on "week-in week-out" by members of the guild. The honorary treasurer of the guild (Miss Tracy) spoke of the need for more annual subscribers." The estate was demolished in 1937.Drawing room meetings were organised by the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild to raise awareness and recruit new members. The LHLG newsletter of 1918 features this image and notes that they accompanied their shipmaster father Captain Aviss, of the Barque Inverneill who with his wife Catherine Florence Aviss, travelling through dangerous European waters, brought the family of three children to visit Melbourne. The two children featured are Margaret and Ronald, born at sea in 1915. Their young sister, Ruth Neil, was also born at sea on the 27 August 1918. The family re-united with a first meeting for the children and grandparents, Captain and Mrs Frampton, who "had lost two ships to enemy submarines and were now on their third". The family participated in "a happy Communion service in our chapel , in which the parents and grandparents joined this formed the keystone of their visit to Melbourne". Unfortunately the young Mrs Aviss contracted the Spanish influenza on their arrival in St John, New Brunswick, Canada, she succumbed in November 1918 after spending a week in the Parks Hospital. Herbert Aviss was left with 2 toddlers and a 3 month old baby. He went back to England with his children in March 1919 on passenger ship, accompanied by a nurse. Martin Frampton and his wife were in New York at the time, but they probably learnt about Catherine's death in the local newspaper. A memorial plaque in her name unveiled in the chapel at the Mission in April 1919. The parents and grandparents left their names and signatures in the visitor book (0149) on the 28 April 1918.One of the rare stories of seafarer visits illustrated with a photograph of the children of a family accustomed to life aboard ship. The impact of influenza also affected this family and others are recorded amongst the supporters of the Mission and reflects the widespread impact that the epidemic of the post WW1 period had on people, Mission activities and restrictions affecting public events. In World War 2 residents of Victoria were concerned about enemy attack so a series of Spotters Huts were established along the coast. In Lorne the Spotters Hut was at Queenspark in the old recreation building. Many locals volunteered their time. The plaque was made by the Lorne Historical Society to honour these people who volunteered to join the Air Observers Corp. A rectangular thin Metal sheet , with black printing. This plaque was made in 1997 as a project of the Lorne Historical Society to pay tribute to the Spotters who worked in the spotters cabin at Queens Park Lorne during the Second World War. It listed all the names of the know Spotters, Win Allen, Nita Armistead, George Armitage, Olga Armitage, Grace Brown, George Crabbe, Monty Craig’s, Margaret Cunningham, Marj Gaylord, Marj Grant, Annie Stirling, Margie Fairbairn, Sheila McIntyre, Wilhemena Morris, Murray Morton, Nick Murnane, Eva Norton, Miss Pethabridge, Eileen Quick, Chas Read, Rev Ken Robert’s, Jack Stirling, Fred Harlock, Nellie Harlock, Cleve Herbert, Joyce Herbert, Hubert Howell, Bert Hughes, Helen Hughes, Enid Jarrett, Alice Kendrick, Marion Kendrick, Rowley Valentine, Mrs G Schram, Don Stewart , Hector Stribling, Cyril Barcoe, Rev Wilson, Kevin Dare, Cliff Green, Shirley Heathcote, Murray Milne. This camera was designed by William Johnston in 1904. Production began in 1905. There were many versions, the number indicated the length of film which corresponds to the width of the panorama. Originally designed for photography of large groups of people. Later it was used for landscapes. This camera was used by the local Lorne photographer William Anderson who took photographs of visitors and local scenes. William purchased Norman Brown’s photographic business in December 1899 and worked in Lorne until his death in 1948It is a large format rotating panoramic camera. A concertinaed fine leather tube with the adjustable lens is contained in a black wooden leatherette covered rectangular box. On the top is a metal winding handle, a series of weights and a carrying handle. The lens is a Gundlach - Manhattan rapid recto graph. This item was used at St Patrick's Catholic Church, Kirkstall from 1910. Although the item is black, black is no longer a liturgical colour after Vatican II.This is of historical significance to the people of Kirkstall and Koroit. Saved from the ship Speke which ran aground on the coast of Phillip Island on the 22nd of February 1906. The ships captain gave the compass box to the Harris family.The Speke was an all steel ship built in Wales in 1891. She was delivering wheat to Geelong and confused a bushfire in Cowes for navigation lights. Saved from the ship Speke which ran aground on the coast of Phillip Island on the 22nd of February 1906. The figure head of the Speke was in the shape of woman, wearing a flowing white dress with blue cuffs and collar and carrying a large bunch of daffodils. It was originally nine feet four inches long. This sculpture went missing after the event and decades later the head only was re-discovered in Mr Thompson’s garage. It was then restored by Headmaster Kevin and the senior children of Cowes State school in 1940.The Speke was an all steel ship built in Wales in 1891. The ship Speke ran aground on the coast of Phillip Island on the 22nd of February 1906. The ship was painted by Artist Woolston L Barratt in 1891 and hung in the saloon of the Speke. It was given by Captain Tilston to John Cleeland, captain of the rocket rescue team and the painting used to hang in his home Wollomai house on Phillip Island. It was restored by Mal Campbell to fix smoke damage.The Speke was an all steel ship built in Wales in 1891, the second largest 3-masted full-rigged ship in the world. She was delivering wheat to Geelong and confused a bushfire in Cowes for navigation lights. A group of twenty-two people seated and standing on the Cowes Jetty, which was built in 1870. Trolleys on iron rail were used to convey goods along the Jetty. Slightly obscured by people is the Jetty Shed, built in 1870 and now classified by National Trust. Beyond water and beach are trees and shrubs. Granite Quarry opened at Cape Woolamai in 1891 by Chambers & Clutten of Melbourne, to supply stone for the facing of equitable buildings, Collins Street, Melbourne. Trolleys on rails brought stones to ship's side at low tide where a jib crane lifted them into the ship's hold. With high tide the ship was refloated.Granite Quarries Cape Woolamai on waters edge. In 1865 Melbourne was visited by a fully rigged steam sloop flying The Confederate Ensign; at the time the American Civil War was in progress. Samuel Amess feted Captain Waddell and his crew although some people were against The Confederate cause. Originally The Warley Hospital built by Robert Walpole in 1908 and moved to its present site in Genista Street, when the present hospital building was erected c 1967. Now owned by Mr Reith. The site on the corner of Thompson Avenue and Church Street, Cowes was reserved on the 12th April 1869 and the church was erected by the end of the year. Financed by the Island Church of England people. Dean McCartney preached the first sermon and performed the dedication service on 30th January 1870. Prior to this time services were held at the McHaffie homestead, Ventnor. Mrs S D (Georgianna) McHaffie, wife of the first European settlers, wrote in her diary "30th January 1870. Drove to Cowes, opened the Church, fine day". the large Bible presented by her is on loan and displayed in the Museum of the Phillip Island & District Historical Society.The timber Anglican Church of St Philips was built by Alex McLardy Sen. in 1869. It is still situated in Thompson Avenue on the corner of Church Street. The Vestry was added by Mr Alex McLardy in 1903 at the cost of 21 pounds.
