Scholarships and Studentships played a very important role in schools of the day. Many families had to make sacrifices to enable their sons to remain at school. The addition of a third year to the junior technical course added to the burden. The main difficulty was the fee of one pound per term for students over the age of 14. There were 4 terms per year making it an expensive undertaking. Many working class boys, and they were in the majority at technical schools, had to seek employment as soon as they reached the age of 14, the statuary leaving age. Costume, Ballarat School of Mines Blazer, 1938
This blazer was worn by Keith Wylie from 1939 until 1942 when he joined the army and was commissioned in the Corps of Aust. Elect. & Mech. Engineers. He was studying for his Electrical Diploma and practice Electrical Engineering. He finished his army service in the British Occupation Force in Japan before returning to be discharged in May 1947. He completed his remaining 2 subjects at S.M.B. in 1947. Green woollen unlined blazer with embroidered emblem on breast pocket. The edges are bound including the three pockets and the sleeve cuff 9 cm from the edge. There are three green buttons at the front. The internal edges are bound are there is tape stitched to the inside where the top of the side pockets are stitched. There are 5 places where a small piece of tape has been stuck to fabric to stop the fraying of small holes.Embroidered makers fabric patch attached behind the breast pocket - Paterson, Powell & Sandford Pty Ltd. This book came into our collection via a donation to the Book Barn, which operates as a second-hand book shop. The donor is unknown.This book was published in 1887, a time of consolidation of wealth after the initial gold rushes in Ballarat in the 1850s. Its full title is 'History of Ballarat from the First Pastoral Settlement to the Present Time.' By William Bramwell Withers, Journalist. Second Edition with Plans, Ilustrations and Original Documents. It is an invaluable history of the origins of Ballarat and its mining history, with a chapter devoted to the Eureka Stockade. Book bound in green cloth on hard cover. On cover: Title incised in black on gold: HISTORY/OF/BALLARAT In gold: REVISED EDITION In black:By/W.B.Withers/PUBLISHED/BY/F.W.NIVEN &Co/Ballarat. The following information relates to enrollments at the Ballarat School of Mines. H . Fleay studied assaying in 1896 John, Spencer, Wallace and Walter Jewkes were enrolled at the Ballarat School of Mines in the late 1880s. J.F., J. Noble, Joseph F., Joseph E., Joseph F. Jnr, Noble Luke, and Patrick Usher were enrolled at the Ballarat School of Mines in the late 1880s and early 1890s. Thomas Sayle was enrolled in Materia Medica, Chemistry, Botany and Astronomy between 1884 and 1891. In 1958 the Ballarat Teachers' College moved from Dana Street Primary School to a custom built college in Gillies Street. Accommodation again became a problem in 1968 with the introduction of the three year Diploma of Teaching (Primary) course. On 19 December 1972 the State College of Victoria Act received Royal Assent. The Act restructured the teacher training policies of Victoria. Ballarat was one of the State Teachers' Colleges which until 30th June 1973, was under Education Department control. Ballarat Teachers' College was renames the State College of Victoria at Ballarat and had its own governing council. In 1975 State College of Victoria at Ballarat moved to the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education campus at Mount Helen, and the name was changed to Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Small, green, soft covered booklet. Th book includes course, regulations, assessments, subject details, general information, art collection overview and student organisations. Ballarat College of Advanced Education is a predecessor organisation of the University of Ballarat. Founders Hall is located on the University's Mt Helen Campus, and is now within the Caro Conference Centre. The Ballarat Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to the performance of fine music at the highest level possible, and was formed in order to provide both a performance opportunity for musicians in Ballarat and District and also to enrich the cultural life of the community. The home of the ensemble was at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education, and it was intended that the orchestra serve the needs of both education and the community.White, soft coloured programme. !30 Victoria Street Ballarat was built for Joseph Phillips in 1888. It was originally named "Ellaville". It was a family home until it was sold to the Education Department in 1945/46 and became a hostel for young ladies, later becoming a residence for the Ballarat Teachers' College. When Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education and the Ballarat Teachers' College merged in 1976, the Victoria Street residence became availablefor use by the Ballarat School of Mines. The Alexandra Babies' Home was adjacent to the Ballarat Female Refuge in Scott's Parade, Ballarat East. The babies from the unmarried mothers at the Refuge remained at the Babies' Home until around the age of three years, when they were usually transferred to the Ballarat Orphanage in Stawell Street, Ballarat East. The Babies' Home was suddenly closed in 1973 under the Hamer Government. The School of Mines was established in 1870 in Ballarat, making it Australia's third oldest tertiary institution. Redmond Barry was its first president, and he was involved in the creation of university degree level courses for the school. The School of Mines was divided into a tertiary division and a technical division. The tertiary division provided higher education courses such as mining engineering, geology, education and business studies, while the technical division provided such programs as wool classing, plumbing and bricklaying.It remained in that form until the 1967 when it was split into three institutions, Ballarat School of Industries, Ballarat Technical School, and Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. They remained three entities until 1976. Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education merged into Ballarat College of Advanced Education. The Ballarat School of Industries and Ballarat Technical School merged into the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat (SMB) in 1976. Several entities merged or had arrangements with SMB. In 1994, a memo of understanding (MOU) was signed between SMB and the Ararat Technical School, which was founded in 1969. Then, in 1998, SMB and the Horsham-based Wimmera Institute of TAFE (1984), dating back to 1882, merged into the University of Ballarat to create a larger University. Green woollen, mostly unlined (apart from the upper back and sleeves) blazer with embroidered emblem on breast pocket. The edges are bound including the three pockets and the sleeve cuff 9 cm from the edge. There are three green buttons at the front. The internal edges are overlocked and there is a panel stitched to the inside where the top of the side pockets are stitched.
