Photograph - Photographic Technicians performing tasks at the Army Survey Regiment, c1970s
These eight photographs were most likely taken in the 1970s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Photos .1P to .7P have the name of the technician written on the back. Photo .8P is not annotated. The equipment operated by the technicians is the KLIMCH Commodore camera. The main tasks undertaken by the technicians were most likely enlargements and reductions of map reproduction material. The KLIMSCH Commodore camera was introduced in 1953 and was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It was replaced with a new model of the same size in 1979. The new model with its computer-based interface provided productivity gains with improved speed and its consistent results led to less wastage in time and materials. Its variomat lens system provided improved retention of map feature linear weights during the camera reduction process. This is a set of photographs of technicians operating photographic reproduction equipment at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo c1970s. The photographs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. The photographs were scanned at 300 dpi. .1) - Photo, black & white, c1970s, Alan Virtue, Lithographic Squadron .2) - Photo, black & white, c1970s, Alan Virtue, Lithographic Squadron .3) - Photo, black & white, c1970s, Frank Lenane, Lithographic Squadron .4) - Photo, black & white, c1970s, Frank Lenane, Lithographic Squadron .5) - Photo, black & white, c1970s, SGT Garren Hill, Lithographic Squadron .6) - Photo, black & white, c1970s, Gavin Neilson, Lithographic Squadron .7) - Photo, black & white, c1970s, Bill Jones, Lithographic Squadron .8) - Photo, black & white, c1970s, unidentified personnel, Lithographic Squadron.1 and .2 – personnel names annotated on mounting card .3 to .7 – personnel names (less rank) annotated on back. .8 – no annotation royal australian survey corps, rasvy, army survey regiment, army svy regt, fortuna, asr, litho -

Journal - Schuss Vol. 17. No. 10 November - December 1951
Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria. The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Cover - Australia's First Olympic Ski Team Departs - features a photo from "The Age" Derrick Stogdale, President of the Ski Club of Victoria, conveys the good wishes of Victorian skiers to Olympic team members, Bruce Haslingdon, Cedric Sloane and Bill Day. The team consisted of Captain-Manager R.G. Chisholm (Chairman, S.C.V. Racing Sub-Committee), W. Day (N.S.W.), B. Haslingdon (N.S.W.), R. Arnott (Vic), T. Aslangu (Vic) since withdrawn. Background to the two openings of the "Goat Shed": Following a need to clean up some of the old L&L Centre buildings, in 1989 Council decided to enclose the remaining goat shed in a steel truss frame for use as a store room. Claire Fitzpatrick, who had run animal husbandry and goat classes on the site from the 1975 opening of the L&L Centre, was invited by the Committee to officiate at the naming of the new building on 3/12/1989. Following a fire of the stables/workshops on 8/5/1990 (which had to be cleared off the site) Council/Committee decided to use the $15000 insurance money to upgrade/refurbish the 1989 building to replace classrooms lost in the "stables fire". This refurbished Goat Shed was officially opened on 30/5/1991 by Cr. Peter Graham, Shire President. (Gleaned from Committee file, 1987-1992.) Background to the two openings of the "Goat Shed": Following a need to clean up some of the old L&L Centre buildings, in 1989 Council decided to enclose the remaining goat shed in a steel truss frame for use as a store room. (Gleaned from Committee file, 1987-1992.) Photos show Cr Graham plus Gillian Barclay (Co-ordinator), Liliana Unsworth (Engineering Design Draftsperson) and Bill Oakley (Corporate Development Officer). Orbost & District Historical Society
newspaper, PS Curlip, November 2008
This inset was published to commemorate the Curlip Festival on 28/30 November 2008 and the P.S. Curlip 11 launch. The Snowy River Mail is an East Gippsland Newspaper. The original PS Curlip was a paddle steamer built in a Tabbara sawmill in 1889 by Samuel Richardson and his sons. It was operated along the Snowy River in Australia's Gippsland region between 1890 and 1919, before being washed out to sea, and broken on Marlo beach, by a flash flood. The Orbost and district community started a project in 2002 to construct a live steam powered replica, albeit somewhat larger than the original to meet safety regulations and carry additional passengers for commercial reasons, the Paddle Steamer Curlip II with the assistance of grants from the Federal and Victorian State Governments.Construction was started in earnest by shipwright, Bill Jones, in August 2006, and with the assistance of roughly 200 volunteers (a core group of 10 performing the majority of the work), she was finally completed and launched on the Snowy River in late November 2008. The construction of P.S.Curlip 11 was a community project which began as a project to re-engage the timber-working community of Orbost. The construction and launch was a major community event. The local newspaper, The Snowy River Mail, documented its progress on a regular basis. An insert from the Snowy River Mail newspaper dated November 2008. On the front cover is a coloured photograph of the Paddle Steamer Curlip 11. It contains photographs, information on the history of P.S. Curlip and the construction of Curlip 11. There are details of the Curlip Festival and advertisements.newspaper p.s.curlip -
