During the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme the employees socialised by joining clubs such as the table tennis club.McKay Creek was the site of a power station where the employees lived in the camp while working there. Table tennis entertained them during their leisure time. The Kangaroo Hoppet is a long distance (42km) cross-country skiing race held annually at Falls Creek on the Bogong High Plains. The first race was held in 1979 and has been part of Worldloppet since 1991. It is held annually on the fourth Saturday of August. The Mt Beauty bowling club commenced in 1970 and closed in 2016 when there were not enough members. The SECV constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme during which time the Kiewa Valley Group was formed and joined the Institute of Engineers. Horace H. C. Mt Beauty HES school was created for the children of the employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria who were constructing the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme at the head of the Kiewa Valley at the new town of Mount Beauty. Mt Beauty School consisted of Mt Beauty Higher Elementary School 1948-1964 before it was split into the current (2023) Mt Beauty Primary School and Mt Beauty High School. See. The Victorian Education Department published and printed this reader in 1937. The infant grades learnt to read using phonics which included word groups eg. 'ee' words, 'ai' words etc.This book was used in all Victorian schools to assist children to read.Small tattered book with soft cover held by cloth on card. The 102 pages are held by two staples. It consists of stories, poetry with B & W pictures some of which have been coloured in with pencil. At the back is a 'Language List' which consists of 'word groups' eg. The outer is cut on the cross, made of nylon and with a train and has appliqued lace of a flower and is beaded. The sleeves are long and shear. The taffeta bodice is fitted with a featured V waistline. The sleeves are pointed (to cover over the hand) with a flower applique. There are 5 pearl buttons down the back and are fastened with loops. The side zip is metal and on the right hand side and at the top there is a hook and eye.
