Book, Jamie Callister, The Man Who Invented Vegemite, 2012
Cyril Percy Callister, a chemist by training, became a food technologist and the inventor of the well known spread 'Vegemite'. A Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) student around 1910, Callister then went to Melbourne University where he obtained his B.Sc. in 1914, M.Sc. in 1917 and D.Sc. in 1931. With Sir David Rivett in 1931 he secured the royal charter for the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, becoming president of the Society of Chemical Industry of Victoria in 1935-36. Vegemite, a yeast based spread, and perhaps one of most famous trademarks in Australia, was discovered around 1922 by Cyril Percy Callister. He was hired by the Fred Walker Company (a Melbourne based manufacturer later known as Kraft) as a laboratory assistant to develop a yeast extract spread. It took some years but by 1954 the special Vegemite song 'Happy Little Vegemites' demonstrated the popularity of the spread. Callister was also known for packing cheese in a can to preserve it and developing Kraft processed cheese. he son of a school teacher and postmaster he was born at Chute on 16 February 1893 and died on 5 October 1949. His brother Reginald Clive Callister (1889-1971) was also a student of SMB. Letter - Correspondence, Henry J. Hall, Henry J. Hall to Ballarat School of Mines, 19/03/1898
Henry J. Hall was an teacher Freehand Drawing and Model Drawing at the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1889 he reported to the Ballarat School of Mines Council that this class was never established for the cultivation of Art (as generally understood) or the making of pictures but with an idea of assisting artisans - of both sexes - and persons connected with mechanical industries, in acquiring lightness of hand, and facility in the use of a black-lead pencil so as to be able to place legibly and intelligibly upon a sheet. For many years Henry Hall advertised private tuition in Drawing, Painting and Perspective, at 'Ferndale', 25 Eyre Street. Handwritten letter on paper with the address 'Ferndale, 25 Eyre Street, Ballarat' printed at the top. The handwritten letter is from Henry J. Hall to Andrew Anderson, President of the Ballarat School of Mines. Handwritten in ink "March 19th 98 Andrew Anderson Esq President School of Mines Dear Sir I am informed by the registrar of the School of Miens that you are desirous of despensing [sic] with the services of Drawing Instructor at that Institution. The reason assigned being dis-satisfaction expressed by the inspector regarding "the quantity and quality of the freehand work done during the year. Before any definite action is taken, might I ask in justice to myself and the students whose work is thus maligned, that I be allowed a personal interview with Mr Monkhouse in order to ascertain the grounds of his complaint, and afford me an opportunity of vindicating my position. I have the honor to remain, respectfully yours Henry J. Hall." Written and circled in red ink "168" ballarat school of mines, henry j. hall, henry hall, andrew anderson, drawing, art -

Photograph - Photograph - Black and White, Proposed Ballarat School of Mines Trade Workshops, c1984
A design for a Trade and Art Workshop at the Ballarat School of Mines was prepared by Ewan Jones and Associates on the Albert Street boundary around 1984. The M.B. John Building (Building K), a three storey, face red brick, restrained Late Twentieth Century International styled building with an elongated, cuboid form (defined by the parapeted facades) that is offset by projecting exposed concrete framed, round‐arched entrance and stair wells on the east (Albert Street) elevation (the centrally located entrance breaking the brick façade with glazing). The facades are also characterised by banks of aluminium framed, horizontal ribbon windows, which wrap around the building corners. Metal shades project beyond the windows, while post‐supported bullnosed verandahs and hoods and projecting concrete stairs are other features. On the west elevation, the cuboid façade is punctuated by projecting curved concrete and glazed, elongated bays at first floor level. (David Rowe/Wendy Jacobs) The M.B. John Trade–Art building of SMB was officially opened by the Hon. John Cain, Premier of Victoria, in the presence of Morgan B. John. Programs include 3 Dimensional Art, Painting & Decorating, and Engineering Trades. Poster, University of Ballarat 'University Room' at the Ballarat Mechanics' Institute, c1995, c1995
Poster on cardboard. The University Room The candle of learning was lit in this city and district by many who have been ling dead. It was lit by teachers who taught beneath bark roofs in the gold rush days, but editors of newspapers who wrote angry editorials about grievances long forgotten. the candle was lit by those who founded mechanics' institutes and their valuable libraries, but the founders of art galleries and museums, and by those who erected statues in Sturt Street. [Extract from an occasional address by Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Blainey AO, inaugural Chancellor of the University of Ballarat, at a University Graduation Ceremony on 13 May 1994.] The University of Ballarat traces its origin to the foundation of the Ballarat School of Mines in 1870, just a decade after the building of the Ballarat Mechanics' Institute. The University is committed to keeping the candle of learning burning brightly i this city and beyond. It is fitting that the University join with the Mechanics' Institute to establish its city presence in this building. The University Room at the Mechanics' Institute is dedicated to the past, present and future scholars, teachers, artists and writers of Ballarat and district. [The University Room was officially opened on 2 June 1995 by Professor BLainey in the presence of members of the University Council, members of the Mechanics' Institute COmmittee and invited guests.]university of ballarat, university room, ballarat mechanics' institute, geoffrey blainey -

Photograph - Colour, E. J. Barker Library, Mount Helen Campus, Federation University Australia - 2006, 2006
Work began on the Library construction in 1968. This was when it was known as Ballarat College of Advanced Education - Mount Helen. The Library started on the ground floor in 1970. In 1971 a contract for a four-storey library was drawn up and construction began the same year. The building opened in 1973, occupying two stories of the current building. The library grew and with Commonwealth Grants was able to develop its collection. In 1987 the library achieved an annual budget of over $1 million. The Teachers Resource Collection was added and by 1989 the library expected to occupy the top three floors plus the lower ground floor. A flexible study area on the top floor was introduced 1990-1991. 2010 saw the completion of a new stage in the history of the library. It now includes new study and research areas including the Geoffrey Blainey Research Centre with access to the University's Art and Historical Collection. The E. J. Barker Library is named after a former Principal of the School of Mines Ballarat who then became the first Director of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education, now Federation University. Jack Barker played an active part in education and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. After retirement in 1987, the College Council decided to name the Library after him in recognition of his achievements.Colour photograph showing the entrance to the E. J.
