Built as a toy, either by a well resourced home workshop or by a toy maker. Have been well used or loved with missing wheels and damaged roof. Possibly dates from the early 1900s. St Kilda was a popular destination for Melbourne cable trams. Demonstrates a toy cable tram set.Cable tram set made from wood and pressed metal. Grip car or dummy has remnants of paint (green and gold) on the sides, holes for wheels on the two wood blocks on the underside. Has an eye hook at one end and a hole for another at the other end. Seat made from timber with a steel wire or rod to represent a grip lever. Metal secured to wood base with nails. Has four metal Staunchions on either side. Trailer similar construction with sides stamped or cut from sheet steel with holes at either end for a eye or hook and wheels. Roof on both items has been pressed and assembled. The trailer has painted on one side "St Kilda" and the remnants of a similar word on the other side.cable trams, toys, trams, st kilda

A5 sized sheet of paper printed by photocopying, titled "Welcome Aboard the Cable Tram" giving details of the Melbourne cable tram set operated by the Museum during the 1987 Begonia Festival. Gives details of Grip car 593 (built new by Newton Williams) and trailer 171 (reconstructed by Darryl Hawksworth). Also gives general information about Melbourne cable trams and the Ballarat Vintage Tramway, in particular the horse tram. On bottom of sheet has a advertisement for the "Swiss Mountain Hotel", at the time operated by Darryl Hawksworth. Brochures were printed for the cable tram operation, handed out during the time run and during the following year, when operated as well. Colour photograph of tram 33 terminating at the north end of Gardens Loop, Wendouree Parade, the first service tram to do so on Sat. 15 March 2003. The service was terminated at this point for some 6 weeks while Wendouree Parade was resurfaced and other track work done. Shows the temporary terminal arrangements, and the earth cable installed to protect the work site on the section insulator and earth stake alongside the pole. Tram 33 has the Eureka roofing tiles and SEC Briquettes roof advertisements and Twin Lakes sign on the drivers dash panel. The destination shown is Gardens via Sturt St. West. The interview is one of a series recorded in 2013-2014 to document memories and experiences of the Williamstown Botanic Gardens Cyril Curtain was born in Williamstown in 1928. He attended North Williamstown Primary School and Williamstown High School. Shortly after marrying he purchased a house on the Esplanade, where he still lives and in which this interview took place. Cyril’s work in conservation of the natural and built heritage is highly regarded. The recently developed Cyril Curtain Reserve in Williamstown is named in his honour. Strip shopping and ample parking were features of suburbs in the middle of the twentieth centuries. Cars were still considered a luxury, although that would soon change, and local, independent shops serviced local areas.During the post-war years, the municipality of Moorabbin experienced a population boom. The 'newcomers' were predominantly returnees from the war who were marrying and establishing families; those from the old inner-suburban areas who were moving away from rented premises to establish their own homes on cheap land.
