Object. Wooden frame and handle, metal mechanism and spokes, line fabric covering. Wooden handle is 4 cms in diameter and 9 cm long. An eyelet through the handle may once have a carrying loop. The handle has a polished wood finish, and is decorated with painted leaves. The top peak of the umbrella is also polished wood, 3.5 cm long, 2 cm in diameter. This box was crafted from a portion of one of the original oak trees in the Jarrahmond WW11 Avenue of Honour.The Avenue was planted in 1955 and linked the farms of the two servicemen from Jarrahmond who lost their lives in WWII. It consisted of English Oaks interspersed with flowering peaches and cherries. Wood for the box was collected in the early 1990's by Stan Weatherall following a windstorm. Stan had the timber rough-sawn into planks by local sawmiller Max Reynolds. The timber was stored for a number of years before being given to Don McLean.A hand-made oak box. The inside base is lined in green felt. The lid is single hinged. the front panel displays a radiating pattern in the grain of the oak wood that resembles the rising sun badge of the Australian Defence Forces. Two brass pins are symbols of Australian military regalia. Inside the box is an envelope with information and letters on the manufacture of the box and presentation to Orbost. W.G (William George) Gray, owner of Allwood Nurseries in Hurstbridge, with horses and cart laden with trees from Kinglake from where he also had a property raising stock. Shire of Eltham Councillor Gray donated English oak and oriental trees for the Anzac avenue at Hurstbridge planted in 1918. In 1922 he operated a well cultivated property of 64 cleared acres, 56 of which were under nursery healthy stock, principally apples, peaches, plums and cherries. In addition to 4 acres of potatoes. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' He grew seedling stock which he supplied to other local orchardists and the overseas market. This image is of railroad train wagons loaded with fruit trees at Hurstbridge Railway Station for export to New Zealand. Frederick George Hurst (bearded) sits on top of the load (aged 73 years). His son-in-law Willian Gray stands beside the wagon. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.Stanley Joseph McFee; Stanley was born at Auburn Grove, Auburn on the 23rd January 1892. He was the seventh son of William and Annie McFee. The McFee family moved to Rhyll in 1894 where Stanley was educated at the Rhyll School. Later he took up farming at Long Point, now known as McFees Road. In 1917 Stanley married Isabell May Cherry who came to Rhyll in 1912 as the school teacher. His wife May supported him in his community activities. Stanley died 1980 aged 88. Nothing is known about the origin. IN 1895 Emma Blanche Annie Dear married Alfred Ernest Wellard, a young Methodist Minister in Tasmania and this was her churn. The Wellards used it in both Tasmania and Victoria. Later, it was handed on to their daughter Winsome Faith when she married Archibald Dufty, a farmer from the Wimmera. By then it was kept as an interesting relic of earlier days, as farming families in the 1920s and 1930s usually made their butter in Cherry butter churns. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. The building in the centre of the photograph is 'Kia-Ora' guest house. Situated on Barber’s Road, ‘Kia-Ora’ was built in 1912 by George Barber. It was later leased by a Mrs Pemberthy. “Kia-Ora’ was one of four places connected when the telephone was brought into the district in 1912. K.G. Luke had a foundry in Queen's Parade, Melbourne which made badges and manufactured items for the Armed Forces during the First World War. He bought 40 acres of cherry orchard in Mitcham in 1952 from a Miss Cook, then went to England and attracted finance from Singer Brass Founders. The company became Luke and Singer. The three factories on site were Luke Manufacturing - stainless steel products and hospital equipment, Luke and Singer - a non-ferrous foundry producing components for industry such as nuts and cutlery, and Concentric Engineering - machinery components.
