This photograph features three display board sections showing information and photographs from 'The Harvest' exhibition inside the Burke Museum at Beechworth in 1999. The boards are titled 'To the Market' and 'Orchards'; the accompanying text cannot be read. The two accompanying photographs depict a man and woman picking fruit.This photograph is of social significance to Burke Museum and the Beechworth community, documenting an exhibition, The Harvest, held in 1999 to communicate the importance of agricultural development, specifically of orchards, in the area. The expansion of vineyards and horticulture in the Beechworth district followed gold rush prosperity in the mid-1850s, with nearly ninety acres of gardens and small farms under vineyards by 1865. There were 400 Chinese market gardeners and hawkers in the area in 1868. The "Speke" was a three masted steel ship built in Wales 1891 - the second largest at the time. The ship drifted broadside on to a reef to the east of Kitty Miller Bay on the 22nd February 1906 while on route from Peru via Sydney to Geelong in ballast to pick up wheat. Vietnamese boat people landing in Philippines during the first years of the events (1975 - 1996). They were grouped up from many different islands and transferred to the refugee camp in Palawan Island. There they were interviewed and waited for decision from UNHCR to be granted settlement approval. In 1988, as part of a Defence of Mainland Australian policy, defence of facilities of strategic importance in northern Australia were allocated to Army Reserve units. ‘A’ Squadron was allocated the defence of Tindal Air Force base located 15 KM outside Katherine in Northern Territory. Construction of the Waranga Basin initially took place 1905-1915 when it was dug by pick, shovel and horse-drawn scoops. It's embankment was initially 29ft high but over time this was increased to 40 ft. It is unknown how this came into the collection at the Warrnambool Museum. However, during the 18th and 19th centuries it was fashionable for young men of means to undertake a 'grand tour'. During their travels they would often pick up souvenirs with these sometimes being ancient artefacts from classical Greece or Rome. It is thought that the item most probable came to the museum in this manner.From discussion with specialists at the British Museum and the University of Reading it was ascertained that the oil lamp is indeed ancient Roman and over 2000 years old. The marking on the top could be Venus although it is quite worn away so it is difficult to tell for sure.A terracotta oil lamp housed in a wooden box. On the top of the lamp are 3 circle incisions and in the centre of the circles is a depiction of a figure. There is a small finger sized handle on the side of the lamp. The handle has 2 incised lines leaving 3 raised ridges. It is squared off at the top. The top of the oil lamp has a hole in which to place a cloth wick and a spout from which the smoke would have come out. The spout is blackened from smoke. The container box is guessed to be from the time of acquisition which would be around the early 1900s and is made from a polished wood. Light in colour.In the box was a label saying, 'Venus coming out of the gate of the temple'. The letter from Eric Harding to Legacy President Ron Foskett in 1978 was in response to a call for information and photos for the archive that was being compiled. Legatees Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong were making an attempt to collect items relevant to Legacy's history for an official archive project The letter suggests L/- Eric Harding provided a photo in which Cyril Smith, Dudley Treagent and others appear but that photo was not with the letter. It also referenced the photo that appears here, with of a group of people at a weekend party at Ocean Grove. No names are identified but it must have been a Legacy event for it to be sent to the archive project. It could be Legatees and their wives and children socialising together at a weekend event in Ocean Grove. Legatee Eric Harding OBE, MM, was also a member of the Limbless Soldiers' Association of Victoria as he lost a leg as a gunner in France in WW1. He served with the Australian Field Artillery in the original Anzac Corps. Despite loosing a leg he was active enough to ride with a Light Horse Party at the head of Melbourne's 1975 Anzac Day march. There were many different musical bands in existence throughout the 20th century in Warrnambool, from Warrnambool City Band to Pipes and Drums as well as trumpet, mouth organ, and military bands. They officiated at many social events and parades and celebrations which were held at the time. The Camperdown Chronicle lists the Dennis King Banjo and Mandolin band as performing at such events around the 1950’s. After Nazism came to Germany in 1933, Simon studied sculpture in Paris and Florence and then came to Australia.
