Between 1992 and 1998 Snuff Puppets was housed on the third floor directly above the Melbourne Museum of Printing at the old Bradmill Cotton Mills building on Moreland St in Footscray. Museum proprietor Michael Isaacson was keen to share his resources and gave Snuff Puppets carte blanche to use his Museum. Nearly all the promotional posters and materials from this time were printed in limited edition runs at the Museum using scrounged paper, odds and ends of ink, lead type, wooden type, lino cuts and an old press.A4 hand printed linocut on thin cream card in 3 colours; blue black, yellow, red. Depicts a pensive skeleton sitting on a small hill with a lowered flag with the initials SP, partly concealed by a giant yellow worm. Two articles that relate to the annual demonstration in 1977. The demonstration was called 'Legacy on Parade' for a number of years. The junior legatees were dressed in costumes, for the production of 'My Fair Lady'. They were Leanne Johnston and Terri Cott in long dressed, and Roseanne Whitehead as Eliza Doolittle and John Fiedler as her father Alfred. The articles were cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity. The year is not known but it is in the 1940s or 1950s as the album was a collection of press photos taken during dress rehearsals from that time. Dobie & Son were most famous for their Four Square range of blends and were known for their quality tobacco since 1809. Dobie's was bought out by Godfrey Phillips and by 1956 the old factory, known as "Greenhill Works" on Clark Street in Paisley was shut down and closed. Much later, the 4 Square brand was made in Denmark up until around 2001. The Singapore free Press circa '47 tells us that 4 Square blends started in 1922, also mentioning Dobie's Roll, a thick plug tobacco of exceptional strength.Round, silver coloured tobacco tin, lid and container partially rusted. These four photographs were taken during a 2/4 RAR Pipes and Drums visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo probably in 1990. Although the reason for their visit is unknown there were several events held at the time commemorating the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps, such as the Freedom of Entry to the City of Bendigo Parade, an Open Day, visits by the Prime Minister Hon. RJ Hawke and the Chief of the General Staff, the opening of the new printing press building Wayzgoose Hall on Corps Day and formal Officer and SGTs Mess Dinners.These four photographs were taken during a 2/4 RAR Pipes and Drums visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo probably in 1990. This is a set of ten photographs of Lithographic Squadron’s Printing Building at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1986. The building was originally George Lansell’s gold crushing battery. When the Army took possession of Fortuna in 1942, it was modified with reinforced concrete floors to house the heavy-duty printing equipment. An additional building was purpose built on the eastern side of the printing building in 1987 to house a new computer-controlled Heidelberg Speedmaster five colour lithographic offset Printing Press. See item 6131.18P for photos of foundation preparation for the new building. Program of visit to Victoria in 1920 by Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII). The visit was to officially thank Australia for the support to Great Britain during World War I and to strengthen the links between Australia and the Empire. The program contains the general itinerary of the visit to Australia, from 26 May - 19 August, and the detailed itinerary of the visit to Victoria on 26 May - 7 June. These 12 photographs were most likely taken in the 1990s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. In photos .1P and .2P the Printing Technician is placing a map negative or positive on top of the printing plate in a vacuum frame before light exposure. Photos .3P to .9P and .12P feature the new Howson Algraphy Autoneg printing plate processor. It improved quality control and efficiency and allowed the conversion of printing plates for positive or negative use. Reproduces nine photographs of trams, including cable trams and a ex Melbourne W2 in Denver. In bottom left hand corner is a photo of the intersection of Main and Barkly St. with two Ballarat single truck trams in bound from Mt Pleasant, taken from the Ballarat Fire Station tower in 1971. We contacted UNSW Press, the book's publisher, which provided the following explanation. Apparently, the team there could not find the scan of the slide submitted for the book. However, a member of the team was able to capture a jpg of page 76 of the book. From my recollection of the original photo, the attached image is very close in terms of its reproduction quality. Four folders containing an Engineering Design Part II Project. Each has detailed written information and drawings. No.1: To design an Extruder Addition to the hydraulic press in the plate shop to enable it to be used as an extruding press to operate on materials similar in behaviour to a wax. No. 2: To design a flywheel of uniform strength of not less than 25 feet. No 3: To design cams, valve gear and inlet and exhaust valves for a 6 cylinder truck engine. No 4: To design an experimental brown coal autoclave for drying brown coal in 10 kilogram lots. Jack chose to do Engineering while still at Footscray Technical School as it gave access to Diploma Courses and tertiary studies. This enabled him to enter the University of Melbourne and do a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering - 1945, 1946, and 1947. In 1948 he did a Diploma in Education at Melbourne University. From this path he was able to follow a career in teaching and his first appointment was at the School of Mines in Ballarat, (SMB) 1949. He became the first Vice Principal of SMB in 1960 and then Principal in 1964 to 1976. From 1976 to his retirement in 1987, he was the Foundation Director of Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE). Jan Senbergs was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1939 and came to Australia when he was ten. Senbergs’ work has been characterised by a simple and bold aesthetic. From lush landscapes to barren urban spaces, his body of work signifies an artist who has continually experimented with shape, form and motif, a fundamental humanist vision, a finely-honed sense of the absurd, and a rigorous studio practice spanning printmaking, drawing and painting. Senbergs is Baldessin's exact contemporary. He was also born in Europe and fled his homeland because of the war, arriving in Melbourne in 1950. Like George, Senbergs also worked at the RMIT and in 1973 represented Australia at the Bienal de Sao Paulo. Senbergs first met George when he was living in St. Kilda. George asked if he could screen print his 'Argus' catalogue for a show at the gallery in the Argus building. George Baldessin (1939-1978) was born in San Biagio di Callalta, in the Veneto in Northern Italy and arrived in Australia ten years later. A printmaker and sculptor he built his bluestone studio at St Andrews (Nillumbik) in 1971. The bluestone studio was hand built by George, his partner Tess and the three Hails brothers, Rob, Doug and Don. Made of recycled materials the studio today contains all of George’s equipment including the large press, which he modelled himself with the help of Neil Jeffrey (Enjay Presses). George won many prizes throughout his career and is represented in many of Australia's public art collections including his famous 'Pears' sculpture in front of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. In 1975 he represented Australia in the Sao Paulo Biennale, before living and working in Paris until his return to St Andrews in 1977. In 1978 George was killed in a car accident aged 39 years. In 2001 Tess returned to St Andrews to reclaim the run-down studio and reconstitute it as The Baldessin Press & Studio - a printmaking retreat. It operates in George’s memory, so that artists may continue to create, perpetuating the generous spirit of George.'New Jersey - rust belt' is one of eight prints in the 'Baldessin & Friends commemorative folio. The folio was conceived by Tess Edwards as a fundraising initiative in celebration of the The Baldessin Press & Studio's fifteen year anniversary, and as a way to honour George Baldessin's memory. The Baldessin Press & Studio is a not-for-profit organisation created in memory of the late George Baldessin (1939-1978), whose original studio is now open to the public for creative use and as a practical legacy to living artists. The Studio is located in St Andrews, Nillumbik. The folio is a unique coming together of seven very different and acclaimed artists who are connected by their friendship to the missing eighth member, George Baldessin. This print finds its' origins in the time Senbergs spent at Harvard in America in 1989-90. In the context of Baldessin it explores an industrial urban surreal vision that was common to both artist. The image captures the life force of the city revealing the keen and observant eye of Jan Senbergs. Similar in sensibility to his large scale charcoal drawings of the 1990s, the artwork is not only a record of what the artist sees, but of what interest him. By following the movement of each line the viewer can witness the artist's eye travelling through, over and around each element of the urban landscape. The scale is deceptive with the image bled to the full-size of the sheet of paper like a microcosm of a much bigger whole. sugar lift etching of an urban (cityscape - New Jersey) scene - bridges, roads, buildings, in thick black brushstrokes. The German occupation during WWII lives on in the memories of those who survived and the relatives of victims. Many Dutch emigrated during the post-war years but maintained their connection with the home country. This item was most likely acquired during a visit at the time of the 1993 exhibition of which it is the catalogue.Soft cover publication containing numerous photos taken between May 1940 and May 1945, the years of occupation by Germany. The contents have been assembled by René Kok, Herman Selier and Erik Somers from the National Institute for War Documentation, Amsterdam. Publisher is Waanders in Zwolle. A single page Foreword was written by Dr .L. de Jong. The six divisions are headed: Introduction, Press Photography, Professional Photography, Colour Photography, Amateur Photography, Illegal Photography. The back cover carries 6 thumbnails indicative of the 6 divisions and a sticker showing the price of €14.95. -

This jacket is part of the dress uniform of a Major in the Army Reserve. Major Bernard Farley who owned this jacket wore it to official functions in the Mess dining room. He served in this capacity from 1998-2001. Bernard also served in the RAAF for a number of years.These trousers are part of the dress uniform of a Major in the Army Reserve. Bernard also served in the RAAF for a number of years.Long black trousers with a single red stripe running down either side from the top of the waistband to the base of the legs. There are two pockets just eunderneath the waistband on either side of the trousers. The fabric frms two stiff peaks at the centre of the back of the waistband. The trousers have a black zip with a metallic clip just above and six black plastic buttons along the interior of the waistband. There is one white square label with inscriptions attached to the back/left of the interior section of the waistband. Directly underneath this is another rectangular white label of the same length however much shorter. Churn Butter - Wooden
This type of butter churn was used around the early to mid 20 century by household and small farms of the Kiewa Valley who kept cows for Milk. The buy product of the milk was cream and butter. Once the cows had been milked, often by hand, women would place the milk in shallow dish, and next morning the cream would be separated from the milk. Or a cream separator machine would be used. The cream would then be churned by the paddles in the butter churner until it formed in butter clumps. Butter Pats would be used to take the butter out and press into triangle butter blocksThis butter churner is significant due to its historical value which explains how butter was made by hand before this process became mechanistically made. Many houses or small farms in the Kiewa Valley had these butter churns to make their own butter for their household or to sell. This has very good interpretation significance as it adds to the history of dairy industry in the Kiewa Valley. In 1969 RMIT lecturer Gerard Herbst arranged an exhibition the work of his Industrial Design students at the NGV’s Design Centre. In ‘Design with Paper' the students explored the characteristics of a sheet of paper, an exercise based on similar ones set by Josef Albers at the Bauhaus, Germany and Black Mountain College, USA. The exhibition attracted press attention, Bulletin critic Brian Hoad noting You are told that in the tradition of Gropius and his Bauhaus experiments of the ‘twenties they are attempting to bridge the gulf between the fine arts and the technical crafts to produce one day from among their numbers a new type of creative thinker. Author, Philip Edward Muskett (1857-1909), medical practitioner and health reformer, was born on 5 February 1857 at Collingwood, Melbourne, son of English-born, Particular Baptist parents Charles Muskett, bookseller, and his wife Phoebe, née Charlwood. His work focused on infant health and welfare. His writing advocated radical changes in the diet of Australians. His last work, The Attainment of Health (1909), was a detailed guide to foods to eat or avoid for specific complaints and diseases. This book was owned by Helena Warren of Newmerella, Orbost. Mrs Warren was a well known photographer and local press correspondent.This book, written by Philip Muskett who was he was well known for his writing on medical subjects, was an influential guide to family health in the early 20th century.A thick red covered book of 678 pp. It contains many advertisements for food suitable for treating diseases and is a detailed guide to foods to eat or avoid for specific complaints and diseases.muskett-philip health diet book-attainment-of-health-and treatment-by-diet
