Lal Lal Falls Reserve contains one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Moorabool Shite. The watefall is part of the on Lal Lal Creek, a tributary of the Moorabool River. and plunges 30 metres from a high basalt column into a deep ravine. Culturally, the Falls are believed to be the earthly home of Bunjil, the All Father or Creator to most Victorian Aboriginal tribes. The name Lal Lal is thought to be Aboriginal for "dashing of waters". The Lal Lal Falls is listed on the Site Registry of Aboriginal Affairs Victoria as a spiritual place. in 1837 a Government Survey Party led by Frederick D'Arcy documented these Falls on the west branch of the Moorabool River. On the reserve opposite, a Race Meeting was held on every New Years Day from 1860 until 1938, attracting crowds of up to 20,000 people. A branch Railway Line was constructed from the Lal Lal station to the Racecourse to convey the crowds.Colour photographs of Lal Lal Falls near Ballarat, Victoria.lal lal falls, waterfall, lal lal, bunjil -

Letter, NSW Attorney General, Letter regarding Utzon and Opera House completion to Solicitors (Mr Barkell and Mr Peacock) for Peter Kollar and others, 23.03.1966
The advice given to the Attorney General regarding completion of Opera House in accordance with Utzon's design is at variance with the suit of Mr Barkell and Mr Peacock that works cannot be completed without Utzon's employment. The Attorney General will consider other expert evidence submitted by Mr Barkell and Mr Peacock. Utzon had resigned on 28 February, 1966. Robin Boyd’s desk cupboard contained two exercise books (item D482.1-D482.2) and assorted articles, essays and other material regarding the building of the Sydney Opera House, inserted inside the front cover of Walkabout magazine, July 1966 (item P1377). This publication is one of those inserts. Many of these were collected by Boyd’s eldest daughter, Mandie, who recalls that her father was writing a book, but was very disillusioned with the way the entire Opera House saga unfolded.Photocopy, 2 pages, part of plastic folder stuck on first pagesydney opera house, utzon, sydney opera house project, walsh st library -
Chiltern Athenaeum Trust
Medal, Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, 1895
Wilfred Clarence Busse was born in Chiltern, Victoria in 1898. His family first arrived in this region during the gold rush era, purchasing a piece of land adjacent to the Murray River. The spectacular scenery and rich history of the area is said to have inspired Busse in his writing. He attended Wesley College in his school days, before going on to study law at the University of Melbourne. After graduating from university, Busse would go on to become a barrister, but he is best known as a writer of fiction, publishing two novels: 'The Blue Beyond: A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia' and 'The Golden Plague: A Romance in the Early Fifties'. Busse died in 1960. This particular object is dated 1895, three years before Busse was born. It can thus be assumed that it was awarded to a relative of his, possibly his father in relation to their land by the Murray River. This object is significant as it is associated with Wilfred Clarence Busse, a celebrated author and barrister who grew up in the locality of Chiltern. It is also a medal awarded by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, a society that has held social and industrial significance since it was founded in the nineteenth century. Quilt
This quilt came to the Running Stitch Group from a visitor at the 'SIO Great Exhibition of Victoria' held at the Museum of Victoria in 1985. This exhibition of historical ephemera about our state included many of the quilts collected by the group. After seeing the value of these utilitarian quilts, many visitors decided to donate their family quilts to the Running Stitch Group. Meg McNab was one such person who identified her step-grandmother as the maker and said the quilt was used in her fathers' family. It eventually came back into her family through her own mother who came to stay in later years. For the journey, the quilt had been used as packing material. Owing to its size, this quilt may have been made for a child. The stained pattern on the back has occurred as a result of rust marks from a wire wove mattress base. This is the front of the quilt. Clothing - Midnight blue silk and velvet bodice
This bodice, belonging to Alice (Henty) Hindson has traditionally been identified as a travelling jacket by her descendants. Alice Hindson was the youngest daughter of Francis Henty and Mary Ann (Lawrence) Henty. Alice's father, Francis Henty, was the youngest son of Thomas Henty, who with his family, their retainers and property moved to the Australian colonies between 1829 and 1832. In 1834, Francis’ older brother, Edward, sailed from Launceston in Van Diemen’s Land to what was to become Portland in the western part of Port Phillip District [Victoria]. Francis, together with the first flock of Merino sheep [in Victoria], followed some months later. The first and second generations of the Henty family established vast pastoral properties in the Western part of the Port Phillip District. Francis Henty managed ‘Merino Downs’ near Casterton, while also living in his retirement at ‘Field Place' in Kew. The Henty Collection of nineteenth and twentieth century clothing, including outerwear and underwear, was collected, stored and exhibited over time by female family members descended from Francis and Mary Ann Henty. During the twentieth century, items from the collection were modelled in two fashion parades by various descendants [1937, 1959]. The items in the collection are historically and aesthetically significant, with provenance provided by oral and written tradition within or held by the family. A number of the items in the collection are very rare survivors, and provide researchers with the evidence needed to reconstruct the lives of notable women in the Port Phillip District [later Victoria] during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.Alice (Henty) Hindson's midnight blue sateen bodice is highlighted using velvet lapels, cuffs, and a rear bow. The velvet, in contrast to the plain midnight blue sateen, is embellished [in the weave] with pink and navy spots. Joined at the front with 23 round domed buttons, hooks and eyes are used to close the neckline. The bodice also features coffee-coloured lace at the front and on the cuffs, which may have been added later. The bodice has some condition issues, missing one cuff and the lace on the cuffs needing re-attaching. The inside of the bodice is heavily boned, complete with a floral chintz lining. Stan Smith, then of 3 Vincent Street, on his father’s horse in Mont Albert Road in about 1916. Mr Charles Smith was an insurance officer whose area was from Burke to Elgar Road; he used his phaeton for transport. Oral testimony - Stan Smith: “We had a stable for the horse near the house and a yard but we tethered the horse at the end of a long rope on paddocks in Empress Road- the area from Mont Albert Road to Guildford Road. We used to put in an iron peg. Some horses were tethered similarly in various paddocks but not a lot of people had horses by this time. A few cows grazed around them.” The picket fence on the left and the trees were those of ‘Monserrat’ – the Parer home, now entered from 26a Wandsworth Road as the Mont Albert Road frontage was sold off many years ago. Slide, Dressed for the Royal Ball 1959, 1959
Slide photographs of two Stanhope residents and their dates, prepared to go to the ball held in honour of Princess Alexandra's visit to Melbourne in September 1959. The ball was held at the Melbourne Town Hall. Elizabeth Brown (on the right) was a resident at Stanhope after her father died in 1953 and she came to Melbourne from Seymour to compete further studies at Toorak Teachers College. She was chosen to present a bouquet to Princess Alexandra at the Royal Ball. Elizabeth wore a pink taffeta ballgown and was accompanied by a Legacy boy, Julian Hyde. The handwritten note implies it is the visit of the Queen Mother, but it was a ball held to welcome Princess Alexandra in September 1959. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image is the best available.A record of of a Legacy girl being chosen to participate at an important event.Colour slide x 4 of two Stanhope ladies and two men in evening outfits, in a beige Anscochrome mount.Handwritten on reverse 'Stanhope girls. Slide, Stanhope, 1950s
Slide photograph of the exterior of Stanhope on a cloudy day. Believed to be from from the 1950s, very similar to 02511 and could be from the same film. Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. It was at 1245 Burke Road Kew (corner of Cotham Rd). It was purchased by Red Cross in 1945 who refurbished it and leased it back to Legacy for as long as it was required as a residence for junior legatees. It was handed back to Red Cross in 1981. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image is the best available.A record of the outside of Stanhope.Colour slide of the exterior of Stanhope sitting on the lawn, in a cardboard mount.Imprinted with slide number 12.
