Painting, Asher Bilu, Solstar, 1968
Robin Boyd most likely saw Solstar at Asher Bilu's exhibition at South Yarra Gallery in September 1968. In November 1968, Robin Boyd arranged for the loan of this painting from South Yarra Gallery to Australian Pavilion at Expo '70 in Osaka, where Boyd was appointed Exhibit Architect. It hung in the bedroom over a bed, containing a life-size cut-out figure by Bruce Petty, in the Model House Interior exhibit on modern living in the Space Tube. On its return from Expo, the painting was in transit at the Boyd's home in Walsh Street and they liked it so much that they decided to buy it. Solstar originally hung on the wall at the end of the galley kitchen. The artwork at the Boyd's home in Walsh St has been moved several times over the years. Solstar now hangs above the dining table, but at the time of Solstar's acquisition, the Boyds hung the painting "Winter Triumphant" (1920) by Penleigh Boyd, Robin Boyd’s father, above the dining table. In early 2021, Asher and Luba Bilu visited Walsh St to view Solstar again. Asher was extremely happy with how the painting looked and its condition 53 years after painting it. He requested it be hung a little higher and he returned in April to make some minor restorations to remove scratches. Silver mixed media with large black circular area in the central lower half. On reverse has the title: Solstar/A. Bilu/Arrow showing which way up. Ceramic (tiles): Tom SANDERS, Untitled, c. 1970s early
Sanders was a well-known local potter who worked for a time with David Boyd at the Martin Boyd Pottery, before returning to Melbourne where he had some association with Arthur Boyd, at the pottery in Murrumbeena. Sanders set up a studio in Eltham in the early 1950s and made the first of a series of architectural ceramic murals with painter and print maker Lawrence Daws in 1956. After returning from his travels in Europe to Australia in 1964, he began to work solely on creating ceramic murals. Murals created during the second half of the 1960s and into the 70s can/could previously be found at Southland Shopping Centre in Cheltenham, Melbourne (1968) - now demolished, the National Mutual Centre, Melbourne (1964-5) - now demolished, Dee Why Library, Sydney (1966), Woden Valley High School, ACT (1967), Tullamarine Airport, Melbourne (1969, 1970), Perth Concert Hall (1971) and University of Melbourne (1975) (with John Olsen). Sanders has worked with many of Australia’s pre-eminent painters and ceramicists including Fred Williams and John Olsen. In 2015 Nillumbik Shire Council will be installing a mural by Sanders, donated by Tom and his family before Tom passed away in 2009, for the redevelopment of the Eltham Town Square. During the 1970s Sanders produced a number of tapestry designs. Highly respected artist and one time local resident Hilary Jackman worked with Sanders developing and adapting his tile designs to be translated into silk tapestries that were made in Japanese Mills of Kawashima Orimono in Kyoto. They were displayed in the big Hall in the NGV. Sanders gave these tiles to Jackman as payment for her work. The tapestries are based on abstract designs and have a cotton warp, and silk weft. The tiles are similar to Sanders’ other mural works such as Wall of the Moon (Homage to Miro) and the mural located in the Perth Concert Hall. It’s clear that Sanders was inspired by the Spanish surrealist artist Joan Miro from the 1930s in both philosophy and style. Miro’s work is quite playful, symbolic and imaginative. Miro’s preference for painting like this was “to express contempt for conventional painting methods, which he saw was a way of supporting a bourgeois society”. He "famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favor of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.” Three earthenware tiles, embossed with an abstract linear design. N/A -

Print (etching): Michael LEUNIG (b.1945 Vic, AUS), Michael Leunig, ‘Pilgrim’ from 'The Baldessin & Friends' commemorative folio, 2016
Michael Leunig is an Australian cartoonist, poet and cultural commentator. His best known works include The Adventures of Vasco Pyjama and the Curly Flats series. Leunig was declared one of Australian Living Treasures by the National Trust of Australia in 1999. George Baldessin (1939-1978) was a printmaker and sculptor who built his bluestone studio at St Andrews (Nillumbik) in 1971 with his partner Tess and the three Hails brothers, Rob, Doug and Don. Made of recycled materials the studio today contains all of George’s equipment including the large press, which he modelled himself with the help of Neil Jeffrey (Enjay Presses). George won many prizes throughout his career and is represented in many of Australia's public art collections including his famous 'Pears' sculpture in front of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. In 1975 he represented Australia in the Sao Paulo Biennale, before living and working in Paris until his return to St Andrews in 1977. In 1978 George was killed in a car accident aged 39 years. In 2001 Tess returned to St Andrews to reclaim the run-down studio and reconstitute it as The Baldessin Press & Studio - a printmaking retreat. It operates in George’s memory, so that artists may continue to create, perpetuating the generous spirit of George.one colour (yellow) etching on Somerset paper. Postcard, Like the boomerang may you quickly come back, c1917
Sometimes called a sweetheart postcard, it was a way of sending thoughts to the troops overseas. The printing on the rear implies it was sent with a hamper to the troops overseas. The text and poem on the front says : 'Like the boomerang may you quickly come back. / To wish you a Speedy, Safe and Sure Return. This hamper is sent you with greetings sincere, And the hope that its contents will bring you "good cheer"; While you're doing your bit, we are thinking of you And we'll welcome you home when you've seen the job through, In the meantime just send us a message to say You've received this all right if you find it OK.' Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920.A record of correspondence with the troops in World War 1 and sending good wishes with a hamper. Functional object - Printing plate: Visitor Card
This printing plate was made for Dr Horace Holmes to be used by him as a calling card. Dr Horace Holmes, born in Tasmania in 1877, came to Warrnambool in 1905 taking over the practice of Dr Fleetwood at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. In 1906 he built a new home at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and moved his practice there in 1912 (Currently occupied by Oz Child in 2024). Dr Holmes retired in 1939, briefly returned to medical practice as a locum during the war years, and died in 1959. He was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Rotary Club. This printing plate is a significant item as it belonged to Dr Holmes, a prominent doctor and a leading community member in Warrnambool for 50 years. It also is a good example of a custom of the time – the use of a calling card when visiting homes or contacting clients and business people. These three badges all bear the phrase " For Our Fighting Men" and were sold to raise funds for Australian servicemen's comforts in World War One. The funds would have been used to send food and amenities parcels to those serving overseas, to provide assistance to those soldiers who had returned to Australia or were serving within Australia. The funds from the sale of these badges were directed to the Australian Comforts Fund which was an organisation formed in August 1916 from the amalgamation of the State groups formed to provide assistance to those serving in World War One. Memorial Plaque and Scroll, Dead Man's Penny, World war One
Bronze Memorial plaque and Memorial Scroll issued to families whose relative was killed in action during word war 1. The history of the dead man's penny began in 1916 with the realisation by the British Government hat some form of an official token of gratitude should be given to the fallen service men and women's bereaved next of kin. Production of the plaques and scrolls, which was supposed to be financed by the German reparation money began in 1919 with approximately 1,150,00 issued. There were some relatives who returned the pennies to the Australian Government in protest as b they felt it was insulting and it did not replace their loved one's life.Killed in Action William Edward Ernest Bond joined the 58th Bn on the 24th November 1915 as a labourer from Geelong. Book, War Memorials of Victoria, 1994
This book gives information on 1,100 War Memorials in Victoria. It was compiled by Bradley, Christey et al and produced for the Returned and Services League of Victoria. War Memorials were established in most settlements in Australia after World War One and added to after World War Two and succeeding conflicts. The number of War Memorials reflect the historical importance of Australia’s involvement in world wars and because of our distance from the battlefields they have become sacred places in Australia – de facto war cemeteries. The book includes information on the Warrnambool War Memorial and those in our area. This book is of interest as it gives details on War Memorials and includes all those in the Western District of Victoria. It will be useful to researchers of social and military history. This is a hard cover book with a blue cover and gold printing on the spine. The dust cover is dark blue with a colour sketch of the Portland War Memorial and white printing on the front cover and an outline of the map of Australia on the back cover. The book has 240 pages, black and white and colour illustrations, a Foreword, Dedication, Acknowledgements, Introduction, Contents, Bibliography and Index and information in alphabetical order of the War Memorials in Victoria. Dross Drossou established a cordial factory in Orbost in the 1930s. He sold his cordial manufacturing business to Phillips and Stone, a Bairnsdale company, in 1948. Glass bottles were refillable until the 1960s, creating a demand for their collection and onsale back to beverage manufacturers via ‘bottle merchants’. A deposit on the bottles was added to all sales as they left the factory. The returned bottles were washed and the old label removed. The inside was cleaned by pushing the bottle onto a revolving brush. The reusing of the bottles went on until the bottle was broken or the top became chipped.
