In the early 1920s Alfred Alexander invented the process, patented it and began making racquets. In 1926 the Company was formed and production expanded at the factory in Wentworth Street, Newstead. Success depended on the use of imported English ash Wooden press with 1 fixed side. The racket slides in and the frame is tightened with a wing nut. This was used to store the rackets as the laminated wooden frame warped due to pressure of the strings and damp conditions. racket wooden press alfred alexander alexander patent racket company -

Lake Bolac & District Historical Society
Black and white photograph, Lake Bolac Overflow, 1956
The outlet for the overflow was originally cut in 1926 and concreted over in 1928. This photo shows flooding into Salt Creek in 1956 and looks towards the west and Rockbank. Boards were added to raise the water level of the lake. These were put in annually, below the walkway depicted, until in 1966 the level of the concrete weir was raised. Consequently the lake did not flush through as readily and it gradually silted up and the lake became shallower.lake bolac, overflow, 1926, 1928, flood, 1966, salt creek, rockbank -

The building is the former Greenvale State School No. 890. Although a school had been functioning at Greenvale since 1870. This is a photo of the school building that was renovated in 1926. At weekends the building was often used for family gatherings and social functions in the district. As the area became developed and changed from a country settlement to a suburb, the school was relocated to a new building closer to the new housing development. The existing building became a community centre. Many country settlements throughout Australia had similar school buildings which as well as being used for education also doubled up as venues for local social functioons.A non-digital sepia photograph with a surrounding white border of a two roomed country school with a water tank against a wall. Letter - Text, Letter from Mallesons Solicitors and Notaries, 1969, July 8, 1969
This letter was sent by C.C. Trumble of Mallesons Solicitors to H. M. Lightfoot. It discusses a query regarding the terms and conditions of the original 1926 Deed of Trust on whether the consumption of alcohol was permitted on the property managed by the Association of the Blind - the Kooyong recreational grounds and Clubhouse. A postscript confirms that C.C Trumble has forwarded a photocopy of the original Trust Deed, also contained in this folder, and that the consumption of alcohol was not mentioned in the Deed of Trust. 1 typed page with Mallesons letterheadassociation for the blind, h.m. lightfoot, kooyong club house -

Tea Tin (Rolfe), Artefact, Early 20th century
This is a tea tin from the business of Rolfe and Co., a wholesale grocery and importing business founded in Melbourne in 1854 by George Rolfe Senior, a merchant and politician. George Rolfe died in 1871 and the business was then run by his son, George Rolfe, Junior. The business continued until at least the late 1930s. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a keen sportsman and he began holidaying in Warrnambool for some years in the 1870s when he started buying land in the area. By the early 1880s Rolfe owned 50 acres in Warrnambool and established his holiday residence at Lyndoch near the mouth of the Hopkins River. He improved the original site with the addition of a large garden, stables, jetty, boatshed, water well, chaff and bone sheds, reservoir etc and bought other properties including Shipley on the Allansford Road and the adjoining property Fairy Hill. He continued managing the Rolfe and Co. business in Melbourne until his death in 1919. Today Rolfe’s Lyndoch property in Warrnambool is the site of an aged care facility. This tin is of considerable significance as it is a memento of George Rolfe who established the property of Lyndoch in Warrnambool and was a prominent land holder in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Note that we have another Rolfe tea tin but it is in very poor condition compared to this later acquisition). This is a rectangular-shaped tin with four sides originally painted yellow but now showing considerable rust. The printing on the sides is brown and white, some on a blue background and some surrounded by decorative patterns.No. 2 Rolfe & Co. Ltd 286-300 King St. Melbourne Rolfe’s Tea Rolfe and Co. was established at Melbourne in 1854. Ever since then it has enjoyed an enviable reputation as a firm which supplies to the public goods of the highest quality. george rolfe, lyndoch warrnambool, rolfe & co, importers, melbourne, history of warrnambool -

Surrey Hills Historical Society Collection
Photograph, "Warlingham", 85 Guildford Road, Surrey Hills, c1910
This photo was taken in c1910. ‘Warlingham’ has many typical Victorian features and has been restored and extended. The first owner was Thomas Kennedy Vernon Coburn, a solicitor. His wife was Sara Ethelwyn (Winnie) Cornell; they married on 26 March 1890. They had a large family and their eldest son (Arthur Wheeler Coburn) was born at 'Wannacul' Surrey Hills on 11 January 1891. The Coburns seem to have moved often and Thomas was declared insolvent in 1894, in part it would seem as a result of the land crash. The next owner was George Lumsden, grocer who is believed to have been there 1892-1896. He was married to Emma Louise Sim. During the years c1913-1919 Mr William Joseph Trenerry (manufacturer) and his wife Elsie (nee Capon) lived here. In the 1919 electoral roll the house name is given as 'Mosman', which may be a reference to Elsie Trenerry's origins; she came from Sydney. See also SHP1927 and SHP1384. Crotonhurst was the estate of Mr William F. Langdon and his wife Sophia, the daughter of judge George H.F. Webb. A drawing room meeting was organised here by the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild on 13 July 1926 hosted by Mrs Langdon. In an article published in the Australasian on Saturday 24 July 1926 we could read: " A drawing room meeting in connection with the Victoria Missions to Seamen took place on July 13, at Crotonhurst, Caulfield, the picturesque home of Mrs. W. F. Langdon, when the chaplain to the mission (the Rev. J. R. Weller) and other speakers explained the purpose of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, and urged its claim to interest and support from the people of Victoria. The chair was taken by the mayor of Caulfield (Councillor Page), who spoke sympathetically of the fine work being carried on "week-in week-out" by members of the guild. The honorary treasurer of the guild (Miss Tracy) spoke of the need for more annual subscribers." The estate was demolished in 1937.Drawing room meetings were organised by the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild to raise awareness and recruit new members. AIF Return from Active Service Badges WW1 (x2), circa 1914-1918
Badges such as this one were issued to soldiers by the Department of Defence to indicate they had returned from active service. It showed they had helped the war effort by serving their country. Sometimes returned soldiers were wrongfully accused of showing disloyalty to their country because they were not seen wearing a military uniform so wearing the badge helped avoid this. A number was often stamped on the reverse and a certificate was provided as authentication.
