The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme is the largest hydro-electric scheme in Victoria and the second largest in mainland Australia after the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The scheme is situated in the Australian Alps in north-eastern Victoria about 350 km from Melbourne and is wholly owned by AGL Energy. The scheme was originally constructed between 1938 and 1961 by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria although it was privatised in the 1990s. The scheme was originally developed solely for electricity generation, unlike the Snowy Mountains Scheme, which was also intended to direct water west of the Snowy Mountains for purposes of irrigation. From 1937 to 1944 the construction of dams at Pretty Valley, Rocky Valley and the Junction Dam were undertaken requiring large numbers of planning and support staff to see the projects successfully completed. Planning and support staff were the backbone of the successful completion of the Kiewa Valley Hydro Electric Scheme and contributed significantly to the development of the Kiewa Valley area. The Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme was constructed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. Draftsmen drew up the plan of the layout as per the instructions from the engineers. The plan was drawn up on a transparency sheet and paper prints run off on a 'dyeline' copier. The 'Chief draftsman' and 'Design engineer' and 'Civil engineers recommended it and approved it. Historic: This plan gives a time line for the work on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Photographs of Ian and Margaret Rose McKendrick (nee Vyner) on their wedding day. Margaret was the daughter of Reta and Harry Vyner who were early residents of the Kiewa area during the construction of the Hydro Electric Scheme. Margaret and Ian were married at St. Mathews Anglican Church, Albury on 11th January 1958. The cream dress that Margaret wore was her Mother's dress, Reta Vyner. 'Operation Key Hold' was set up in June 1994 to establish a security network whereby (with written permission) members of the public could leave their house key at the Hospital in a safely, locked cupboard to be assessed by approved authority in case of emergency. This is similar to the emergency button (hung around the neck) which sounds an alarm at a central location and alerts appointed acquaintances for assistance - used currently (2015) Operation Key Hold was initiated in Mt Beauty for people at risk of being unable to call for assistance. The letters and notices are examples of setting up a community organisation which began in 1994 locally and became State wide later in the form of a distress alarm which worked by radio contact to a central location. Typed and hand written papers including letters and notices of varying sizes referring to the setting up of 'security network' whereby a house key is left (with written permission) at the Hospital in a safely locked cupboard. The Television Translator was set up for people in the Upper Kiewa Valley who couldn't access the ABC, SBS and other channels of television from other transmitters in the area. Black spots were funded in 1999-2000. The machinery in this photo shows a Tournapull C earth moving machine, one of many during this period Circa 1950 - 1960s when hydro electricity powered turbines were being constructed in both the Victoria and New South Wales Alps. This was Australia's answer to a non polluting supply of electricity for a fast growing city population. It was at this time that air pollution from coal powered furnaces was becoming more and more under attack by health authorities.This item is part of a visual account of the construction of dams and hydro electricity facilities during the early 1950s. It was the beginning of the environmental push not to allow the degrading of Australian Alpine regions. Air pollution of the major cities and the increase in power demands of both industries and population within them required an alternative pollution free alternative electricity supply. These for runners of Hydro electricity generators required both large supplies of machinery and human resources. This construction phase within the region brought not only tradesmen but also unskilled workers to an area which had mainly had farming and mining activities. This item shows the excavation of the side of a railway track using a pneumatic shovel and a rail mounted truck by two workmen. The period covered was well before State Health and Safety requirements, such as helmets, became law. It also details that the workmen were from European heritage as their head coverings were a handkerchief knotted at each corner. This was typical for workmen of this heritage, others used caps or hats or no head covering at all (the macho male look)The photograph of this item was one of many depicting great achievements and opening up the region. A visual link or time capsule of the 1950s rural/mining sectors clashing with the established rural industriesThis photo depicts the time (1950's) and place (Bogong and Mount Beauty) where construction workers had an immense impact, not only on the physical environment but also on the social and economic development of the Victorian Alps region. The fast expansion of smaller settlements brought about increased pressures on the welfare viability of certain subgroups within the region e.g. farming, droving and commerce (caravan hawkers versus static shops). These changes brought about a heightened awareness by both local and State Governments to upgrade not only facilities within the region but also access to the region. This photograph shows part of the railway constructed and used for the removal of soil and rocks from the tunnels bored out of the mountains for the pipeline servicing the Hydro Electricity power stations in the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme. This photo details an era when there were 4,000 construction workers located in two main accommodation camps, Mount Beauty (the larger one) and Bogong village. These accommodation sites were constructed and maintained as a secured or gated residential area with access only available by a special pass authorised by the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme. All the power used by the rail system was from electric motors connected to batteries. Overhead power poles seen on either side of the embankment details that electricity from the Scheme was in use. This use was cleaner and more environmentally friendly than the coal still used by large locomotives from city to country railways. The worker shown is not however wearing protective head and hand coverings. Mt Bute Station was a pastoral lease originally established c.1840 by Duncan Hoyle. The lease was later transferred to Charles and William Oakley (c.1853), and then to Matthew Hamilton Baird (c.1858). Sir Samuel Wilson acquired the lease in 1872 and purchased the property in 1873. Mt Bute was subdivided for soldier settlement blocks after World War I. The home block - house and 700 acres - is currently owned (2018) by the Collins family.Faded photograph mounted on cream-coloured card, which shows a family outside the residence at Mt Bute pastoral station. Federation University Australia showcased its students and research at a luncheon for His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex KG GCVO, at the Mt Helen Campus on Sunday, 8 April. The University’s student leaders and academics joined other dignitaries and business representatives for the special event. “The University is deeply honoured to host HRH The Earl of Wessex and share his passion for volunteerism and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award,” Professor Helen Bartlett, Vice-Chancellor, said. Prior to the luncheon HRH The Earl of Wessex experienced a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at the University. The program included showing HRH The Earl of Wessex concept plans for a refurbished Sports Science facility at the Mt Helen Campus.  Guests were treated to a performance by the Arts Academy’s renowned vocal ensemble Word of Mouth. At the conclusion of the luncheon, HRH The Earl of Wessex planted a tree at the Student Commons Courtyard. The visit to the University by HRH The Earl of Wessex was the first by a member of the Royal Family since Prince Charles visited in 1974. HRH The Earl of Wessex was in Australia to attend the Commonwealth Games and undertake additional engagements to recognise and promote The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Australia.
