This photograph shows the blacksmiths premises on the north end of Commercial Road, Tarnagulla. Information collated by Murray Comrie: This building was demolished in the 1970s. The first use of the site was as the George Hotel licensed to an A.B. Clay in 1858, then Waller and Robinson. Charles Waller operated his Excelsior Line of coaches from the George Hotel stables. John Ousley took over the stables for use as a blacksmith's shop. He sold out to Stafford & Sons in 1908. Staffords found the existing premises at the George Hotel too small and built this building. Frank McNamee later took over the premises and operated it for many years. This photograph is a reasonable copy created from an older original. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1970s. Monochrome photograph depicting a large run-down weatherboard building at the north end of Commercial Road, Tarnagulla. Originally used as the Masonic Lodge Temple of Tarnagulla United Lodge, No. 1318 (E.C.), opened and consecrated 21.1.1869 by Wor. Bro. Wardlow. Br. Stamp was installed as Master. The other part of the building housed the Masonic Hall Hotel, with F.H. Goldsboro as licensee. Information collated by Murray Comrie: William Herd was born in Scotland in 1829, and came to Australia in 1852. He set up a business at Hard Hills and then and the lower end of the main lead at Sandy Creek (Tarnagulla). He then purchased a business from a Mr. Turnbull in Commercial Road where he built this large store. He was a member of the first Borough Council in 1864 and Mayor on several occasions. Herd died in 1899, aged 70 and his son carried on the business for several years. This building was later moved to Metelman's farm in Arnold West to be used as barn (and was as late as May 1970), as shown in THA-2019.0055. This photograph is a reasonable copy created from an older original. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1970s. Information written by Murray Comrie: John Shields Simpson was born in Scotland in 1831, came to Victoria in 1853 and after mining for a time took up land at what was later to be the Nick O'Time Lead at Poseidon. He took up a store at Newbridge and in 1905 built a hotel alongside the store. Both were severely damaged in floods of the Loddon River in 1909. He was elected to the Tarnagulla Borough Council in 1882 and retained his seat until 1915 when he resigned. He was Mayor of the Borough on five occasions. George Minto (b.1824 in Harwick, Scotland) was engineer at the Flour Mill in Tarnagulla, was Mayor of Tarnagulla Borough Council for a time and was engineer of the Shire of Marong for twenty years. For 13 years he occupied the position of surveyor to the Bendigo City Council. In his later life he lived in Kangaroo Flat. Whilst living there, on the 28th November 1914, he died, aged 90 and a half years. This photograph is a reasonable image created from a historic news source (unknown). This two-storey building was built in 1866 by the Colonial Bank of Australasia. Before this, the site had been occupied by Foo's shop. Whilst it was being built, the Colonial Bank operated from Company's Hotel (later known as Burstall Hall and the Council Chambers). The double-storey building in this image was used by the Colonial Bank from 1866 until 21st February, 1888. The premises were sold to the Union Bank for £2500. The Union Bank moved in and commenced operations on 6th June 1888, continuing until 1942. The building was later used as a general store until the 1990s. It is now a private residence. This is a reasonable copy of an older original.
