Book, Robertson, Craig, Buckley's Hope : the real life story of Australia's Robinson Crusoe, 1981
Blurb: On Boxing Day 1803 a young English convict named William Buckley escaped from Victoria's abortive first settlement, at Sorrento. For the next thirty-two years Buckley survived in the wild, mainly because he was adopted and helped by the local tribes. In 1835 Buckley rejoined the civilization he had cast aside, emerging to meet Melbourne's founders. He became an important guide and interpreter in the crucial first years of the European conquest of the Port Phillip region. Then, as the Aborigines were engulfed by the flood of white men, Buckley found himself in no-man's land, mistrusted by his former black friends and by the white society who so misunderstood them. He was reviled, so harshly that his reputation has suffered to this day. This is William Buckley's story. It is a story based on fact, about a real Robinson Crusoe who was unique in Australia's history. And it is also a story of European intruders imposing their savage will on an alien, ancient continent. Rarely has Australian history come more alive than in the pages of this remarkable first novel. Buckley's life with the Aboriginal people of Port Phillip between 1803 and 1835; subsequent life in white community ; includes glossary of Aboriginal words (p. 271-280).288 p. : 3 maps ; 22 cm.Blurb: On Boxing Day 1803 a young English convict named William Buckley escaped from Victoria's abortive first settlement, at Sorrento. For the next thirty-two years Buckley survived in the wild, mainly because he was adopted and helped by the local tribes. In 1835 Buckley rejoined the civilization he had cast aside, emerging to meet Melbourne's founders. Father of the donor, Mervyn Graham, worked for Denny Lascelles for many years as a wool classer in Geelong and later as a representative in Hamilton. The Denny Lascelles Wool Warehouse was the first building in Victorian planned to facilitate storage, inspection and marketing of wool in one operation, and upon completion was the second largest store in the colony. CJ Denny's was largely responsible for establishment and development of the wool marketing industry in Geelong and is a figure of significance in the history of settlement in Geelong.Black and white photos showcase different rooms of the Denny Lascelles building and the process of classing the wool within the store, from classing the wool to packaging and transportation.8080.7 - On wool press - Made by Johns & Waygood LTD. Book, Giblin, R. W, The early History of Tasmania: the Geographical era 1642-1804, 1928
The history of Tasmania before Australian Federation took place in 1900 may be conveniently divided into three periods which were, by their nature, entirely distinct from the others. Tvhe first of these was the Geographical Era dating from the discovery of the island in 1642 to the years 1803 and 1804, when the first settlements were formed. The second division may be termed the Penal Establishment Era. This last from 1804 to the recall of Lieutenant Governor Arthur in 1836. the final phase might be called the Progressive Era, and was marked by a continuous improvement and development in all the conditions which made for a better social order for the inhabitants of the country.p341; fold-outmaps; illus: appendices; notes; bibliography; chronological tables; index; 22 cm.The history of Tasmania before Australian Federation took place in 1900 may be conveniently divided into three periods which were, by their nature, entirely distinct from the others. ... settlement of Australia. Through a selection of the many document ...Contents: The coming of The Strangers; The environment & its shapers; The Governors & Their Circle; Staying & leaving ; The Lot of Women; Australia & the World; Australia in 1822.Blurb: The Coming of The Strangers challenges our ideas about the European settlement of Australia. Through a selection of the many document, painting and engravings held in the Mitchell and Dixon collections of the State Library of New South Wales, a picture of life in Australia is reconstructed - spanning the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 to 1822 when the first generation of white Australians had accepted the continent as their home. Those who left no written records: the Aboriginal people; white women and convicts, have been brought to the foreground to give a balanced perspective of history during the earliest decades of European habitation in Australia. The Coming of The Strangers accompanies a major exhibition being held at the State Library of New South Wales during 1988. In co-ordinating both this book and the exhibition, the Mitchell Librarian, Baiba Berzins brings to public view many letters, journals and works of art that have not been published or displayed for over a century.144 p. : ill. Book, Boys, Robert Douglass, First years at Port Phillip : preceded by a summary of historical events from 1768, 1935
Foreword: This Chronology extends from the first permanent settlement of "Port Phillip" or "Australia Felix," at Portland Bay, by Edward Henty, until the beginning of the proceedings of the first Town Council of Melbourne. In order to provide the necessary historical perspective, the Chronology has been preceded by a Summary of Historical Events. Many matters are here noted for the first time, and, through the courtesy of the Trustees of the Public Library of Victoria, the compiler was allowed to publish in full the diary kept by Sir Richard Bourke during his visit to Port Phillip in March, 1837.In addition to the authorities quoted in the text, recourse has been had to the large collection of official documents in the Public Library of Victoria (including the collection of La Trobe papers), the Historical Records of Australia, and the books and pamphlets dealing with the first decade of this State.159 p., [4] leaves of plates : ill. ; index; 22 cm.Foreword: This Chronology extends from the first permanent settlement of "Port Phillip" or "Australia Felix," at Portland Bay, by Edward Henty, until the beginning of the proceedings of the first Town Council of Melbourne.
