Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Photograph - Photograph, Sepia, 1940-1950
This photograph of Lillie and Olive Duncan is one of a number featuring the sisters. They were active members of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild during the 1920s and 1930s and the objects we have relating to the women highlight the relationships forged between seafarers and those who offered their time and energy to the Mission. The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild was instrumental in raising the necessary funds for the construction of the current Mission to Seafarers building. They also worked to provide the tangible elements of seafarers' welfare, such as procuring donations of goods and money. However, their most important work, in many ways, was to provide company, conversation and support to seafarers. Lillie, Olive and their entire family were involved with the Mission over an extended period of time.Black and white photograph of Lillie Romana Duncan and Olive Harriet Duncan. Olive is on the left wearing a dark coloured dress with a 'V' neck, little coloured coat and gloves, carrying a clutch under her arm and wearing a dark hat. Olive (on the right) is wearing a ladies' suit and gloves, carrying a clutch under her arm, wearing a dark coloured hat and a brooch at her neck. The photograph has been turned into a postcard, complete with printed postcard division on reverse. In pencil on reverse: Lillie Morgan/Olive Hall/RHS/(DUNCAN) Printed: POST CARD/CORRESPONDENCE/ADDRESS -

Photograph - Photograph, Black and white, Bill Doyle (Reverend C.J. Eldridge-Doyle), Dancing at the Mission club, 1960
The photograph indicates that in c.1950, dances were held at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria main hall. The photograph shows one of the many dances (literally) held at the Missions to Seamen during the 1950s. These events were organised by the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild with many of these members participating in the dances with seafarers. This image is significant as it documents a point in history, in part, the services provided to visiting seafarers in the 1950s.Black and white photograph, with a white border, in the main hall at Missions to Seamen Victoria. The photograph shows a number of couples dancing in the main hall. Two couples are visible in the foreground. The ladies are to the right of the men, with one arm around each other. The couples seem to be doing a 'progressive' dance around the hall in a circle. The lady at the front right of the photograph is looking back at the couple behind, is wearing a light cardigan and has short, light coloured hair. There is in arch in the background that is one of the doorways out to the courtyard. A couple in the background appear to be moving towards the left of the photograph, while the couple visible in the foreground appear to be moving toward the right. Letter - Correspondence, Letter to Lillie from Ted, 29 October 1928
This is one in a series of letters written by various seafarers to Lillie Duncan. Lillie was a member of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild during the 1920s. She seems to have struck up a number of friendships with seafarers who used the facility. The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild was responsible for much of the fundraising that constructed and maintained the organisation from its inception in 1902. They were also responsible for arranging dances and other social activities designed to make seafarers welcome in a strange environment. The purpose of the Mission to Seafarers is, as it always was, to provide comfort and welfare services to visiting seafarers. Photograph - Photograph, Sepia, Just married, Harry and Dora, 14 February 1928
The Marriage Register lists Harold Priestley Simpson and Amy Dora Walker as the bride and groom, and the wedding date as 14th of February 1928. The photograph uses the personal Harry and Dora, instead of the formal Harold and Amy. In the Register, Amy started signing her name as Dora. before correcting it. The photograph shows that weddings took place at the Chapel during the late 1920's, and the style of weddings at the time. This includes the type of outfits worn, such as the length of the veil and the type of bouquet carried. Dora's Bridesmaids are depicted in 2 other images in the MTSV collection also an image of the chapel decked with flowers for the occasion. The article in the Herald of the day describes the event: "WEDDING AT SEAMEN'S CHAPEL Reception at Hotel Windsor The pretty little chapel at the Sea men's Institute was packed with interested friends this afternoon, when Miss Dora Walker, one of the Mission's most enthusiastic and efficient voluntary helpers, chose it as the setting for her marriage with Mr H. P. Simpson, son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Simpson, of Mornington. A group of her fellow workers decorated the chapel with lovely pink and white gladioli, carnations and roses. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. R. Weller, chaplain of the Mission, and the bride was given away by her father, Mr A. W. Walker, of Manning road, East Malvern. She wore a lovely ivory georgette frock, the finely tucked skirt being fashioned with a deep transparent hem of Chantilly lace. Over it fell a beautiful Honiton lace veil mounted on tulle and arranged to give the ef fect of a train. Fragrant white roses composed her bouquet. Two attendants followed her down the aisle — her sister, Miss Molly Walker, and Miss Ella Kendall — both wearing dainty shrimp pink georgette frocks and large crinoline straw hats in the same shade with a dainty edging of tulle. They carried bouquets of pink cactus dahlias nnd delphiniums. Mr Louis Buscombe was best man, and Mr George Thompson grooms man. After the ceremony Mr and Mrs Walker entertained about 50 guests at the Hotel Windsor."The photograph shows St. Peter chapel was being used for weddings in 1928. The Anglican church has been used for weddings since being finished in 1917. The Marriage Register shows that these weddings were legal in the Commonwealth of Australia, and lists Church of England as the denomination for this wedding. Miss Amy Dora Simpson (nee Walker) had a long association with the Mission, first as a young Volunteer with the Ladies Harbour Light Guild circa WW1, and through to her wedding in early 1928 and beyond. Square sepia, glossy photograph of a bride and groom, taken as they leave a building. Guests are throwing rice at the newlywed. The groom is turned towards the camera, while the bride is looking ahead, carrying a bouquet. There is a white border around top, bottom and left edges, the photograph seems to have been cut in half along the right edge.On the reverse: handwritten in blue pen JUST MARRIED!/DORA & HARRY/28/2/28. 618 is stamped in blue ink . Photograph - Photograph, Black and white, 1952-53
An historical visual record of some of the members of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild, circa 1950. Many events run by the LHLG founded in 1906, were initially held in venues across Melbourne. In later years the main hall of the building opened in 1917 became a main venue for entertainment, meals and dancing. The LHLG organisation eventually amalgamated with the Flying Angels at the Mission circa 1962 and many LHLG members such as Dora Simpson, later elected as FA President went on to officiate. The Ladies Harbour Lights Guild (LHLG) a Melbourne and statewide network initially raised funds and held events for the Mission to Seafarers. Originally founded in 1906 the LHLG were responsible in 1917 for raising the funding for the Chapel and Dome at the Mission. The group and network developed a structure promoted to and adopted in one form or another by other similar auxiliary groups supporting Missions around the world. Black and white photograph. Clothing - Clothing, lady's white kid gloves, 20thC
Ladies' gloves for formal and semi-formal wear come in three lengths for women: wrist, elbow, and opera or full-length (over the elbow, usually reaching to the biceps but sometimes to the full length of the arm). In the late 19thC and early 20thC Gloves were expected to be worn for both daytime and evening wear with most types of outfits. The most expensive gloves are custom-made of kid leather. Mousquetaire gloves have buttons at the wrist so the wearer could open the buttons and slip her hand out without taking the whole glove off. The finger section would be folded in and kept away tidily. This is how ladies wore gloves while dining. After the meal they would put their hands back into the gloves, usually for the rest of the evening. The Eldridge family were early settlers in Moorabbin Shire and relatives of William and Elizabeth Box.
