This trophy is one of several from the 1930s that were awarded as part of inter-church sporting activities organized in Warrnambool. One of the sponsors of this inter-church association was Fletcher Jones, the well-known clothing manufacturer. He had his head office and main factory in Warrnambool. This trophy was awarded to the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.) for the bowls competition. A Congregational Church was opened in Liebig Street in Warrnambool in 1864 and transferred to Henna Street in 1940. In 1979 this Henna Street church was sold to the Salvation Army when the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to form the Uniting Church. The game of bowls has been popular in Warrnambool since its establishment in the town in the 1890s. This cup is of interest as it is a trophy from sporting competitions held in Warrnambool in the 1930s. HMAS Quickmatch (G92/D21/D292/F04), named for the quick-match, a fast burning match used for lighting cannon, was a Q class destroyer operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Although commissioned into the RAN in 1942, the ship was initially the property of the Royal Navy. Quickmatch served with both the British Eastern Fleet and British Pacific Fleet during World War II. In the 1950s, the destroyer was converted into an anti-submarine frigate. In 1957, Quickmatch operated in support of Malaya during the Malayan Emergency. The first Seafarers Service was held on 23 October 1905 in the St Paul's Cathedral in London to celebrate the Centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson on 21 October 1805. Reverend Alfred Gurney Goldsmith launched the first Seafarers Service two years later and the first service was held on Sunday 10 November 1907. Willis Vale: House built by Edward Maygar, Robert Whatmough lived there mid 19th century and later sold to Partington family. It was located on the Plenty River at Partington's Flat Greensborough. Land use included farming and orchards. The derelict Willis Vale house was vandalized in 1964 and destroyed when a fire originating from North Plenty Gorge - Kurrak Road - was lit by two teenage boys and made its way several kilometres down to Partington's Flat Greensborough. The photographic postcard was made in 1915-1916 by Willets Photography in Geelong. It is one of a series called 'Victorian Training Ships and it featured the sailing ships John Murry and the Dart'. The John Murry was commissioned by the Victorian Government for the training of juvenile offenders from 1910-1918 and anchored just off Williamstown, Victoria. The ship was previously named Loch Ryan. The Dart was named such in 1882, and in 1904 the New South Wales Government purchased her for use as a training ship. ln 1912 the Victorian Government bought her for use as a tender, to support the John Murry training ship until she was again sold in 1919 to the owner of a shipping and trading agency. The postcard is significant for its association with sailing ships and with training ships. It is also significant for its representation of two training ships used for rehabilitation. This form of treatment became controversial so the project didn't last for many years. Churchill Island Heritage Farm has a large photograph collection dating from the nineteenth century. This series provides an insight into the early days of Churchill Island as a Conservation site. Robert Ingpen is a renowned graphic designer and book illustrator who was born in Geelong in 1936. In 1968 he became the only Australian to be awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his International contribution to book illustrations. Robert Ingpen did a classic set of drawings of Churchill Island (circa 1976), before the farm restoration. They were originally sold to raise funds for the conservation of Churchill Island and can still be seen as prints or depicted on place mats and coasters. Prior to the first antivenom development in Australia, many of the snake men had a vast array of snakebite remedies they either used for themselves in the case of bites or pedaled to the public. Treatments such as ammonia, strychnine, chlorinated lime, potassium permanganate, suction caps, alcohol, gunpowder, petrol, toad urine, iodide swabs and pig face plant juice were some that were used and sold. The first antivenom produced in Australia was in 1930 for tiger snake bites. Subsequently, in response to public pressure, other antivenoms were produced. Built for William Wilmot Couche (1829-1890) probably in 1869. The architect was Lloyd Tayler (1830-1900) and it was designed in the polychromatic Lombardic style that had been introduced to Melbourne by the architect Joseph Reed (1822-1890). Couch was a prominent merchant and businessman. He founded the firm Couch Calder & Co, was director of several insurance companies and a member of the Melbourne Harbour Trust for many years. From about 1900 the house was renamed Wavenhoe. In the 1920s Wavenoe Avenue was constructed through its gardens and most of the land sold off including the blocks at the corner of Hotham Street and Alma Road. Henry Henty (b.1833-d.1912) was a successful businessman, and briefly a MLA for the seat of Grenville, Victoria in 1866. He was one of three sons of James Henty, and nephew of Edward Henty who is considered to be the first permanent European colonist to take up residence in Victoria. Henry Henty and his wife Marion Ann Henty (nee McKellar) had ‘Tarring’, Kew built for their family in 1872. The Henty family resided at ‘Tarring’ until the death of Marion Henty in 1919. ‘Tarring’ was then sold to Ruyton Girls’ School, and the School moved to the site, (now 12 Selbourne Rd, Kew) in 1920. ‘Tarring’ was renamed ‘Henty House’ in honour of its original owners. Frank Millett and his nephew Hopper Cahill are the two people standing by the building after spending the day shooting rabbits in 1922. They are standing in front of the Aitkens Gap Police Barracks. In the 1860s the gaol and stables were sold to George Millett and added to the Millett property. The Barracks and the new farm homestead were built by Mick Morrison. The Bald Hill Hotel at Aitkens Gap on the Bendigo Road (Calder Highway) was guilt by George Millett in 1854 and functioned until the gold began to run out after the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s. The Millett family continued to farm until 1967. The family also and operated hotels in the local area. This Venezuelan 1956 Olympic pennant was souvenired by Marlene Austin, nee Trenberth in 1956 when she was working as an official driver for the Melbourne Olympic Games. Marlene, who was living with her parents in Brighton at the time, took leave from her job as a stenographer to work as a driver at the Olympics. She drove officials and dignitaries from a variety of nations (including Thailand, Italy, Cuba and Sweden) to and from events, collecting a number of souvenirs. Marlene's family have lived in Brighton since 1941, when her parents moved into a house at 15 Moffat Street. The house remained in the family for more than 75 years, before it was sold in 2018.White triangular pennant with a blue border. Carols by Candlelight is a Christmas concert held at the Sidney Myer Music bowl. Programs and candle holders were sold, and collections made during the event to raise money for the Austin Hospital and the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind. 3KZ also recorded the concert, which was played on radio on Christmas Day with a phone number to ring to donate. Semak is an Australian company, manufacturing Australian-Made equipment for the Foodservice Industry. It was established in 1948. The most famous Semak appliance is the 'Vitamizer'. Designed in 1948 it quickly became the standard for blending. An updated version was relaunched in 2012. The Semak vitamiser was advertised as a wonder machine which every housewife should have.Advertising claimed that the Semak could whip cream, grind coffee, blend jam, makes soups and sauces, makes cakes, sandwich spreads, ice-cream, special diets, puree fruit drinks, supper snacks, mayonnaise and dessert. It sold for £21. Demonstrations were conducted in electrical stores across the nation. A photo of widows at trading tables in the Clubrooms at Legacy House. It is one of the annual fetes usually held in November. Items for sale included home made food items like relish and jams, and craft items. Legacy House held craft lessons throughout the year and often the items made were sold at the fetes or at a stall outside Legacy House during Legacy Week for fundraising. The lady in red is Billie Sims who has been President of the Widows Club. It is likely to be 1988 due to the photographers reference number meaning 17 November 1988 (ref no. 881117). A Legacy widow, Beryl Billing, with three mail bags and a lot of loose letters. Beryl Billing was the co-ordinator of the stamp sorting for many years and wrote progress reports in the Answer in the 1990s. Photo reference 910319 on the proof sheet (00851) is assumed to mean the date was 19 March 1991. The widows clubs have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises some funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. Later information found shows that Mrs Billings is the wife of a legatee and not a Legacy Widow. The yellow label with 00435 says that the young ladies are: "Su Davies and Carol Shaw / Staff members sold badges in the city on Badge Day, 1986". They may have been professionally taken to publicise Legacy Week in the newspapers. Carol Shaw was a staff member who participated in several events to publicise Legacy.
