Photograph (black & White), General Sir Thomas Kelly-Kenny - South Africa Forces
As well as his army positions, Kelly-Kenny was very interested in politics in his native County Clare. In the Second Anglo-Boer War he was , as a Lieutenant-General, General Officer Commanding the 6th Division of the South African field forces. He was twice mentioned in dispatches and received the Queen's South African Medal with four clasps. He was involved in the relief of Kimberley, the battles of Paardeberg, Poplar Grove and Driefontein. Lieutenant-General Kitchener was appointed commander and over-ruled Kelly-Kenny's plan to besiege Cronji and bombard his force from a safe distance. Kitchener ordered an assault on the Boer trenches. The result was "Bloody Sunday" - an unnecessary sacrifice of hundreds of lives on the British side. Kelly-Kenny was involved in the engagements at Poplar Grove and Driefontein where the 6th Division distinguished itself. These were viewed as key to destroying the Boer morale and winning the war. General Kelly-Kenny was a close friend of King Edward VII. Appointments made, at the insistence of the King, were often challenged. Due to his loyalty and abilities Kelly-Kenny was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and received a knighthood in a private audience. Once again others tried to have him moved from the War Office but the King intervened again and he remained in his position. He was conferred with the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (1904), Grand Cross of the Red Eagle (1905 - Germany), Grand Cross of the Rising Sun (1906 - Japan) and on his return to Britain he received the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (1906) Individual image taken from photographed poster of tobacco and cigarette cards.kell-kenny, county clare, lieutenant-general, kimberley, queen's south african medal, paardeberg, poplar grove, driefontein, kitchener, bloody sunday, cronji, boer war, trenches, knight commander of the order of the bath, war office, king, king edward vii, knight grand cross of the order of the bath, grand cross of the red eagle, grand cross of the rising sun, knight grand cross of the royal victorian order -

Building Equipment, original hand made nails Box Cottage c 1850, c1850
The original small, pioneer cottage was built in the late 1840s to early1850s, by an unknown pioneer. It was located on part of a 30 Acre allotment that was originally part of Henry Dendy’s Special Survey granted in 1841. The doors and window sashes, (made of red deal joinery timber), as well as the brass locks and fittings, are from the original cottage, and were imported from England. The fire-place bricks are from the original cottage, and are sun-dried, (not kiln fired), and are hand-made. Convict marks can be seen on two bricks. There is a small display of external cladding shingles from the original pioneer cottage. These shingles were hand-split, and most likely made from locally collected timber The nails included in this display were used to fasten the shingles on the original cottage, and are also hand-made. The enamel nameplate, “Colonial”, on the wall of the cottage, was the name chosen for the original pioneer cottage when a later owner, Mr August Rietman and wife Frieda leased the property in around 1917. August purchased the property 1935 for 1200 Pounds approximately and resided there until 1953. In 1974 Mr Lewis, a timber specialist, found the dilapidated building on property he had recently purchased in Jasper Rd and suggested it be reconstructed and relocated. Moorabbin Council agreed and the Cottage was rebuilt just about 250 metres from its original site. The cost of the rebuild was met by 'Victoria's 150th Committee', plus a small grant from the City of Moorabbin, and Mr Laurie Lewis donated much of the timber for the reconstruction. Photograph, Speaking Contest 1993, 1993
From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. Participants gave a four minute prepared speech and a two minute impromptu response to a topic. In 1993 the topic was "Music - a distraction to study". President John Stevenson is shown on the far left of the photo with John Straney of the Norwich Group, congratulating the winner, Susie Dowling of Strathmore Secondary College and the runner up, Zayne D'Crus of Mazenod College. The guest speaker in 1993 was the Herald Sun Journalist Keith Dunstan. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the Stat, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. On 11 November 1996 the first National final was held with contestants from six states."A record of a Junior Plain Speaking contest that was run by Legacy from 1988 to the 1990s.Black and white photo x 4 of Junior Plain Speaking contest in 1993 and white paper label and an article in the Answer.legacy promotion, speaking contest, answer, jpesa -

Photograph - Main Bedroom Fireplace, Villa Alba, c.1882
The Villa Alba Museum is cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration. Most rooms in this historically and aesthetically significant house have stone (typically marble) fireplaces that are inset with plain and decorative tiles produced by the company of Mintons Ltd.Born digital photograph of the fireplace in the main bedroom of Villa Alba. The original 1880s white marble mantel surround has a raised iron and brass cast iron grate with hearth and side tiles by Mintons Ltd. The marble fire surround has being carved in a conventional style and lacks the opulence of what was at the time described as the grandest bedroom in the Colony, whereas the raised grate features decorative brass sun symbols and scrolling on the iron panels. The 'grey monochrome' surround tiles, of which there are eight in situ were produced to design by John Moyr Smith by Mintons Ltd as part of the 'Waverley' series (No, 1607) of which there were twelve subjects (Mintons Catalogue, p. 62/206). The selection conforms to William Greenlaw's desire to symbolically represent Scottish themes in the decoration of the house. It also relates to the mural in the dining room architrave of scenes from the novels of Sir Walter Scott. The three rows of hearth tiles employ a repeated geometric pattern.fireplaces, mintons, mintons - tiles, villa alba - main bedroom -

Decorative object - Suite of curtains, 7 drops, 1850-1900
7 curtain panels, all the same size, possibly to fit a 3-light bay window; or alternately, to fit 3 windows in the same room (or something else altogether, if this is not the original total number). Fabric: silk-wool/linen (?) mix, sky blue ground with narrow vertical stripes gold. The fabric is a damask weave with a watered (moiré) finish; the large, woven motif depicts an urn filled with stylised flowers, leaves and curlicues; the spacing of the motifs is more 19thC than older styles. Each curtain drop is decorated with an applied band of narrow, colour-matched gimp braid around the sides and lower end. The bottom hems are weighted with what feels like lead shot. The curtains are lined with sturdy brown cotton. They are gathered at the top edge on drawstring tape; and sewn with small metal hanging rings. Faded vertical bands of sun exposure are visible on most of the curtains, and one panel has a mended tear on a lower side. Otherwise they are in excellent, sound condition.decorative arts & design, interior decoratio -- history, curtains, curtain accessories -

Domestic object - Sewing machine in cabinet, Ward Brothers (G & S Ward), ca. 1933
The donor inherited this Wardana machine from her mother, who bought it in about 1933 and used it to sew garments for her sister's dressmaking business in Frankston, Victoria. The donor often used this machine until she purchased an updated model. There were originally three Ward Brothers who owned the North Melbourne sewing machine business but they had a falling out. This machine's decals on the map of Australia only include the two remaining brothers. The Ward Brothers, G & S Ward, established their sewing machine business in North Melbourne in 1888. The cabinets and ironwork of the machines were made in Australia and the Ward Bros. imported their machines from overseas manufacturers in England, America and Germany. The assembled machines were sold under brand names that included Ward, A.N.A. the patriotic-sounding Australian Sewing Machine Company. The "Wardana" was one of their brands. This sewing machine was fabricated in Australia from imported parts from England, giving a snapshot into the early manufacturing industries that were operating at the time just after Federation.Sewing machine in a wooden cabinet with iron foot-operated cast iron treadle mechanism. The hinged cabinet top opens out to form a worktop. The sewing machine lifts out of the cabinet to sit level with the worktop, resting on two supports within the cabinet. The lockable cabinet door opens from right to left revealing fitted shelves and spikes for spools and bobbins. The gold-painted maker's name is cast into the black treadle. The machine has its original instruction book, oil can, and eighteen accessories in an enclosed cardboard box. The round shallow oil bottle has a rubber dispensing tube. Colourful decals decorate the black body of the machine. Inscriptions include a Serial Number stamped on the bed of the machine. Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Nathan Curnow, Little Bridge by Nathan Curnow, 2018
It's encouraging to see my city using poetry in such a public way. The park itself is a humble one, which suits these little poems perfectly. If you're ever in town come and take a seat for a while. The poem 'Little Bridge' by Nathan Curnow was commissioned as part of a placemaking project in Little Bridge Street Pocket Park, Ballarat in 2018. The Park was redesigned to include more passive surveillance, and improved amenity to increase community safety in the area. The poem is engraved onto seating to provide a rest and point of interest space in the small park. Six seats featuring an engraved poemPut it all down and take a seat/ Pull out a snack from your shopping/ Listen to the trumpeter busking a tune/ With every visit this park is growing/ Killing time takes real devotion/ Stare at the flags and masts of your town/ And the buses come rolling down Bakery Hill/ It may be cold but we lean to the sun/ If you feel like a square of the Eureka flag/That’s hopelessly lost and tattered/ Remember you’re as precious as a corner-piece/ We search for you first to get started/ There is something big on Little Bridge/ Not a beanstalk that leads to a giant/ But another day in the life of Ballarat/ All of this gold at the surface poetry, little bridge street, ballarat -

City of Moorabbin Historical Society (Operating the Box Cottage Museum)
Plaque, Official Opening Reconstruction Box Cottage 1984, 1984
The original small, pioneer cottage was built in the late 1840s to early1850s, by an unknown pioneer. It was located on part of a 30 Acre allotment that was originally part of Dendy’s Special Survey granted in 1841. The enamel nameplate, “Colonial”, on the wall of the cottage, was the name chosen for the original pioneer cottage when Mr August Reitman, a sculptor, began leasing the property in 1917. August purchased the property c 1935, for 1200 Pounds approximately and resided there until 1953. He sold it to Lewis Timber Co Pty Ltd in 1970. In 1974 Mr Lewis, a timber specialist, found the dilapidated building on the property he had recently purchased in Jasper Rd and suggested it be reconstructed and relocated. Moorabbin City Council agreed and the cottage was rebuilt about 250 metres from its original site. The cost of the rebuild was met by 'Victoria's 150th Committee, plus a small grant from the City of Moorabbin, and Mr Laurie Lewis donated much of the timber for the reconstruction. CMHS volunteer members operate the Box Cottage Museum which is open to the public on the last Sunday of the month or by appointment. the Official Opening of the Reconstructed Box Cottage on November 18th 1984A plaque commemorating the Official Opening of the Reconstructed Box Cottage on November 18th 1984BOX COTTAGE - 1850 - RE-ERECTED - 1984box william, box elizabeth avis, deny's special survey 1841, brighton, moorabbin, ormond bentleigh, mckinnon, market gardeners, pioneers, early settlers, reitman august, reitman william, lewis timber co pty ltd, moorabbin city council 1934 – 1994, -

Photograph - Black and White, The University of Ballarat Mace, 1996, 1996
The University's mace was carried in procession for the first time during the Graduation ceremonies in May 1996. The mace was presented to the University by former Chief Commissioner of the Ballarat City Council, Vern Robson, at a ceremony on 02 February, following a national competition for its design, sponsored by the Council. (The Flag, Issue 2, July 1996) Nineteen artists responded to the competition which called for a design that would embody a distinctive Australian image reflecting the heritage of the city and in relationship with gold, an Aboriginal element and the history of the University. The winning entry, dominated by a poppet head, was submitted by Central Victorian artist/sculptor Trefor Prest, a sessional lecturer in sculpture at the University.(The Flag, Issue 2, July 1996) The Herald Sun of 03 February 1996 reported 'the new mace shows importance elements of Ballarat's heritage as well as the university's focus on the future. The artist emphasises the egalitarian nature of Australia as embodied in Ballarat's famous slice of history - the Eureka uprising. ... The mace has a poppet head at the top of the shaft - an unusual element for a mace - but it represents Ballarat's mining history and the University's evolution from the Ballarat School of Mines. An opening egg at the top stands for the nurturing of development and learning. The mace's straight shaft is depicted as the tree of knowledge and, incorporating a bark canoe scar, Ballarat's Aboriginal heritage. At the end of the shaft is a surveying device, which represents precision and accuracy ads embodied in the university's academic pursuits.' Bob Morrell of the University organised the national competition to design the mace and said 'It is in keeping with the university's logo, 'proudly flying the flag', which incorporates the Southern Cross.' Trefor Prest lectured in Sculpture at the University of Ballarat from 1995-1996.Black and white photograph showing three men holding the new University of Ballarat (now Federation University) mace. Amber Bead Mandala, Rosemary De Dear, (exact); 2002
MEDIUM: Digital print. DESCRIPTION: A fractal exploration on 192 gsm archival matt. Image ranges from yellow, orange, and red to darker tones. Gold outer frame with a glass front. The Mandalas geometric designs are symbolic of the universe and used in Hinduism and Buddhism as an aid to meditation. The creative possibilities that exist in these sacred circles, are often based on a step-and-repeat principle, centre, and symmetry. Here we see this put into practise. The mandala has an iris quality about it with 16 pillars pulling centrally to what looks like a pupil, the centre of the mandala. This then has more points around it and then more once again. This fractal approach gives the work a textural depth. The use of blurring and merging in a kaleidoscopic fashion creates movement, the circular flow repetitive and calming. The use of reds throughout mandata art represent the glowing sun and of fire, red generally taken to be the color of life, love, joy and rage, the polar values of the color. Orange the colour of cheerfulness and gaiety, a colour mixed from red and yellow, it stands for kind-heartedness and warm-heartedness. Photograph, Stone Villa house 4 Bennett Street Bacchus Marsh 1883
The house depicted in this image was constructed in 1865 for James Young a prominent local businessman and participant in community affairs. James Young left Bacchus Marsh in 1869. In 1870 Stone Villa was purchased by local solicitor Francis Gell. In 1872 it was bought by William Collyer. For a time before 1883 it was used as a school operated by Mr Thomas Kissock and his wife. From 1883 until 1922 it was used as a parsonage by the Church of England. In 1922 it was sold to Frederick Slack as a private residence. Since Slack's ownership there have been other owners. As of April 2024 it remains as a private residence and is listed as a heritage property in the Moorabool Shire planning scheme. The identity of the two women and young girl in the foreground of the image has not been established. One of the women, and the child are possibly the wife and daughter of the Rev A.C. McCausland who was the Church of England Vicar in Bacchus Marsh from 1872 until 1885 and would have resided in this house in 1883 when this picture was produced. An early visual record of one of the most culturally and architecturally significant nineteenth century stone houses in Bacchus Marsh.Small sepia 'carte de visite' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll', the Jeremeas Family Album.
