The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870 through the initiatives of the Ballarat Mining Board making it the oldest site of technical education in Australia. The Board was concerned with the shortage of mine managers for the goldfields. Classes began in surveying, mathematics, and chemistry and a decade later they included metallurgy , assaying and geology. With the decline in goldmining the direction of the college changed and broadened, the art School was established and the Ballarat Junior Technical School developed. In 1976, the tertiary sector seperated from the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat to form the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In the 1980s SMB was a Community College of Technical Education and Further Education (TAFE) offering a wide range of vocational, enrichment and preparatory programs. It is continuing the tradition of providing for the educaiton needs of people within the Central Highlands. During the 1970s and 80s it acquired and refurbished old buildings and developed new facilities to keep up with the needs of an expanding curriculum and student population. A light blue document titled "Bendigo Teachers' College 1954". Also on the front cover is a list of the staff working at the college at that time. On the inside cover is the "Significance of the Graduation Ceremony" and "Order of the Ceremony". Mr. F. M. Courtis gave a welcome to visitors whilst the Principal gave the college charge to the graduands. The 'Graduation Book' was presented to Mr. E. C. Krieger Inspector of Schools by Miss J. C. Burnett. The final call for 1954 of the graduands was called by Mr. F. G. East. Finally the Occasional Address was given by Mr. O. C. Phillips Chief Inspector of Primary Schools. The following page contains a list of the graduands and on the back cover is the "Principal's Charge to the Graduands". A light brown document titled "Bendigo Teachers' College Graduation Ceremony 1953". Also on the front cover is a list of the staff at the college. On the inside cover is the Significance of the Graduation Ceremony and the Order of the Ceremony. Mr. F. M. Courtis gave the welcome to visitors and the Principal gave the College Charge to the Graduands. The 'Graduation Book' was presented to Mr. E. C. Krieger Inspector of Schools by Miss J. C. Burnett. Mr. C. L. Barker called the Roll of Graduands for 1953 and Mr. E. B. Pederick Chief Inspector of Primary Schools gave the Occasional Address. Charles Ernest BARRIE and Jessie May LANG daughters Jessie Maude and Dorothy Joyce Barrie were born on the 6th November 1920, in Bacchus Marsh . Jessie Maud BARRIE was born on 06 November 1920 in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, she married Colin Leslie RICHARDSON on12 September 1942 in Melton, Victoria, Australia. Jessie and Colin had four children, Pamela, Barre, Helen and Graeme. She died on 26 February 1994. Dorothy Joyce BARRIE married Thomas Charles COLLINS on 07 June 1951 in Yarram, Victoria, Australia (or Strathmore Presbyterian Church. Thomas and Dorothy had three children Geoffrey, Julie and Neil. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1980 was the third time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Paul Tomkinson and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995.
