The area is bordered by Highett, Mentone and Heatherton. The market gardens, farms and paddocks have gradually been sub-divided into housing and industrial estates. The Southland shopping centre is a major feature of the area.Cheltenham was established as a rural market gardening community. The Le Page family lived in Cheltenham since 1854 when Nicholas Le Page, a tailor from the Channel Island of Guernsey, bought two acres of land on Chesterville Road near Bernard Street to establish a market garden. Over the years the Le Pages purchased more land in the area. In 1875-76 Nicholas' son Frank and his wife Mary built 'Daphne Cottage' near the corner of Bernard and Wilson Streets. n the 1940s Frank's son, Everest Le Page, bought five more lots of land in Chesterville Road from the Tuck family. The Le Pages grazed horses, ponies and cows on this land, and grew pumpkins, carrots, parsnips, onions, potatoes and cabbages. Many buildings and locations within in Cheltenham commemorate the Le Page family's contribution to the Cheltenham community.Aerial photograph taken in 1945 of the Cheltenham district within the City of Kingston. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, Meena Bazaar for the Jug, Turner Audio Systems. DIRECTED BY, Miichael D. Edwards. DIRECTOR'S NOTE, The sexual power of women is all persuasive. If, as Germaine Greer says, they stopped loving the victors, there would be genuine revolution. The idea of a sex strike to stop a war seems preposterous.... What else is left to the aware but politically emasculated woman? Aristophanes, like us, had been appalled by a pointless and hopeless war. Outrageous indignation had failed to stop it - so he resorted to comic absurdity; perhaps to shame the warmakers. Our version of the play is colloquial and probably ' in vogue'. It is colorful, musical, flippant, and not a little risque. It is, however, based on an awareness of the power of sex roles and the arrogance of a male-dominated society and a profound sense of frustration at the apparently immovable forces that make our wars and enact repression in all its forms."ballarat teachers' college, production, state college of victoria, ballarat, gillies street, liz stubbs, joy dunstan, jenny tait, denise maroney, ann bilston, tina conroy, michael russo, tony ryan, terrence doran, shane quick, sue richards, anne gillies, glenda hamilton, janette marshall, gillian hogan, janine grieg, robyn stanseby, stephanie buchanan, janeen mccillough, wendy gray, elizabeth evans, mary staindl, barbara price, john rowe, jeff moore, stephen schneider, chris slater, peter hassell, errol elbourne, peter orford, keith mcdougall, terrance doran, robbie eastcott, gary oliver, david murphy, alex traianou, kim hatcher, steve albon, austin rickell, stuart tolliday, keith mcivor, bruce miller, ken jones, cheryl brown, ruth newall, michael d. edwards, norman lindsay -

On 7 April 1994, the Borough of Eaglehawk was united with the City of Bendigo, the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye, and the Borough of Eaglehawk, parts of the Rural City of Marong, the Shires of McIvor ...Eaglehawk is a hilly district, eight kilometres beyond central Bendigo, with many quartz lodes. The origin of its name is uncertain. It may have been named by a shepherd who killed an eaglehawk which attacked sheep, or by an early goldminer who observed an eaglehawk. Gold was discovered at Bendigo (Sandhurst) in October, 1851, and the gold-bearing land extended several kilometres north-west of Bendigo beyond Eaglehawk. One well-known goldfield was Eaglehawk Gully, dating from 1852. The community at Eaglehawk soon began to develop. On 29 July 1862 the Borough of Eaglehawk formed and in 1865 a Town Hall opened. By 1871 the population of Eaglehawk was 6,590. In 1887, when George Willan was Mayor, the Borough issued medals for Queen Victoria's jubilee (NU 20204-5 ), and in 1897, when E.C. Brown was Mayor, it again issued medals for Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee (NU 20453). The same year moves began to build a new Town Hall, but it took until 1901 for funds to be raised and construction to be completed. Further growth occurred in both the community and social institutions, and by 1903 the the population was 8,130. By then Eaglehawk was connected to Bendigo by steam tramway, and boasted post and money order facilities, three banks and a telegraph office. It had 'numerous hotels', three state schools, two private schools, nine churches, a court of petty sessions, a police station, two mechanics institutes, several organised societies and a park 'hansomely laid out with flower beds and shrubs'. The 'model borough' had 1,862 houses, and streets lit partly with gas and partly with kerosene. By 1947 the decline in gold mining had caused the population to fall to 4,090. Bendigo became more dominant as an employment centre. However, Eaglehawk still had nine hotels and as well had acquired an electric tram and public baths. The population reached its turn-of-the-century level again in 1991. On 7 April 1994, the Borough of Eaglehawk was united with the City of Bendigo, the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye, and the Borough of Eaglehawk, parts of the Rural City of Marong, the Shires of McIvor and Metcalf to form the City of Greater Bendigo. By then the borough had become physically joined with suburban Bendigo.
