The Beechworth Foundry was vital to the industry of the town and surrounding district in the early years of the town’s development. Originally opened as the New Ford Street Foundry by A. Roger in 1858, J Duncan and M Straughair amalgamated and established the Beechworth Foundry in 1867. The business was extensive and operated out of many buildings, each with their own specialisation. All of the buildings pictured in this image are part of the larger Beechworth Foundry. In the late 1860s it employed 16 men. The foundry was fundamental to the running of the town and surrounding district, as it manufactured all manner of items, including tools and machinery for the mining and agricultural industries. The foundry business collapsed in 1896 after the death of it’s founder, John Duncan, the same year (Straughair had died in 1882). The foundry was reopened by W H Phillips in 1905 and taken over by H Delora in 1906 This image is significant as it shows some of the many buildings of the Beechworth Foundry, which was a fundamental business to the running of the town and surrounding district, and supplied many of the tools and machines required for the mining and agricultural industries, as well as other aspects of life between the 1850s and early 1900sSepia rectangular photograph printed on paper. William MacMahon Ball (‘Mac’ Ball) was Professor of Political Science at Melbourne University from 1949 to 1968, having lectured there since 1923. He became known as an ABC commentator on international affairs from the early 1930s to the early 1960s. Between 1940 and 1944 he was Controller of Overseas Broadcasting (which later became Radio Australia). In 1945, he was political consultant to the Australian Delegation at the conference leading to the establishment of the United Nations, and in 1946 was the British Commonwealth Representative on the Allied Council during the post-war occupation of Japan. Mac and his wife Katrine (plus daughter Jenny) came to Eltham in 1942, and in 1945 moved into an old timber cottage at the eastern end of York Street. With help from Alistair Knox, Sonia Skipper, Gordon Ford and John Harcourt, the house was totally renovated to become an early example of Eltham mud-brick. Mac died in 1986 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with Katrine. Part of their land backing onto Bridge Street was donated to Eltham Shire Council and is now a reserve called MacMahon Ball Paddock. The booklet comprises of a series of papers published in the Ballarat Star, with some revisions. The Administrative Council hoped the publication would increase interest in Technical Education, especially the Art of Mining. He would also hope the public would recognise the Ballarat School of Mines as an institution adapted to supply technical education. Section III describes the lecture hall, and the apartments on either side of the hall, including the office of the registrar W.H. Barnard, mathematical classroom, chemical laboratory, and metallurgical laboratory. Section IV outlines the subjects offered by the Ballarat School of Mines, including Mathematics taught by John Victor of Grenville College, who had been educated at Trinity College Dublin. Mining and Land Surveying was taught by C.W. Thomas. Mr Croll taught mechanical drawing, followed by Jonathan Robinson of the Union Foundry, and finally S. Keast. It then lists some text books used in the school. Section V mentions the School Council, lack of funds, future directions, mining laboratory. Vi- Describes the land and out buildings, and the proposed building for metal and wood turning, brass foundry, blacksmith, working engine, etc. This section describes some large donations to the school - 50 pounds from the Misses Meglin of Melbourne, 10 pounds 10 shillings to the 'Pyrites fund' by the Walhalla and Long Tunnel Companies in Gippsland. Section VII covers the teaching of chemistry by Joseph Flude. Section VIII outlines the metallurgy classes and the process of assaying. Section IX covers telegraphy taught by Mr Bechervaise Section X describes the examination process at the Ballarat School of Mines. Examiners in mathematics were G.J. Scrap book containing invoices relating to accounts to be paid by the Ballarat School of Mines between 1870 until 1875. The School of Mines at Ballarat was the first school of Mines in Australia and was established in 1870. The works done to the former Ballarat Circuit Court House were overseen by Robert Davidson (architect and Surveyor) with the contractor being James Williams. Large book, green leather with red binding, numerous original invoices pasted onto the pages. The first pages of the scrapbook includes correspondence relating to the refurbishment of the former Ballarat Court House which was used as the Ballarat School of Mines from 1870. Ballarat College of Advanced Education is a predecessor of Federation University Australia.Brown covered photograph album showing the Ballarat College of Advanced Education Conferring Ceremonies held in Founders Hall, Mount Helen Campus. The photographs include the academic procession and some photographs of the audience. The Ballarat School of Mines had a 'Model Mine' that was used to teach students. Practical work was undertaken for a fee, supervised by laboratory superintendents. The monument commemorates those from Avoca who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It was dedicated on18 November 1921. The memorial was later rededicated in 1988 to also remember those who served in the Second World War. During the First World War, 137 men from the Avoca area volunteered for the armed services and of this number 29 were killed. A plaque, unveiled in 1984, commemorates Sergeant Lewis McGee V.C who enlisted from Avoca in World War One. Colour photograph of the Avoca World War One. A photo of a troop ship in 1917. This could be the ship Private John Basil McLean travelled to Europe on, and the signatures were his shipmates and the photo was kept as a souvenir of the voyage. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 on the transport "Medic" for Plymouth, UK, arriving on 18 February 1917. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving Portsea in 1920.
